CONCLUSION
Two days later, Misha, Zeta, Maxim and the others drove up a long and winding driveway to a run-down abandoned farmhouse, near the small town of Chita in the middle of the Siberian section of Russia. Maxim looked at the farm with dismay and hopelessness in his eyes as he surveyed the damage done to his home by time and neglect.
The others got out of the vehicles and they too, looked around.
Zhora and Dima began walking around while Zeta joined her brother.
Maxim looked at her and shook his head. “It’s all gone,” he whispered. “Everything we once worked so hard for is gone.”
Zeta knew what he meant. She nodded. “It was gone the day Ivan showed up.”
“Now what are we going to do?” Maxim asked his sister.
Zhora, Dima and a few of the others joined them. It was Zhora who suggested, “We can rebuild it. Build it up stronger and better than it was. We can work the land again.”
Maxim froze then turned to look at his men. “You would do that?”
“Rebuilding this land would give us purpose again. Give us value and pride again. We could take back a small piece of what Ivan took from us.” Zhora shrugged. “It is a new beginning for all of us if you and Zeta agree.”
“There is more at stake here than any of us know about,” Dima said. “Maybe we can make this place a good thing again. Working here, living on the land, it will be a new beginning, not only maybe for us but other people he screwed over.”
A few of the others agreed.
Maxim looked over at his sister. “What do you think?”
Zeta smiled and patted his arm. “You do what you have to do. This land is your birthright. You own it free and clear now.” She smiled and glanced down at the ring on her finger. Looking back at her brother, she told him. “This is what papa would have wanted for you. Rebuild this farm with your friends. Make it a home again, for all of you.”
“The High Council has granted you part of Ivan’s proceeds for the wrong he did to all of you,” Misha told them. “You can use part of that to rebuild and make this farm into something that would make your family proud.”
Maxim stuck his hand out and waited for the others to join him. When all eighteen hands were joined, they gave a shout and all the hands rose in the air. Chaos ruled for a moment.
Zeta smiled at their exuberance as she walked away from the group.
She came to rest at the base of a tree her mother had planted almost forty years ago. She planted it the year she and her husband bought the farm and when she gave birth to her children, she planted another tree. In this little group of trees, Zeta paused then lowered herself to the ground. She began clearing away the weeds and debris. “I brought him home to you mama,” she whispered into the breeze. “Maxim is home and I think he’s staying. He’s going to rebuild your dream, yours, and papa’s dream, that is. Your dream is now his dream.”
She then felt him more than heard him.
Misha stood over her and looked down at the top of her head. “Is this where you laid your mother to rest?” he asked her softly.
Zeta nodded. “This was her dream place.”
Misha looked up and motioned for Maxim and the men to be quiet for a moment.
Zeta cleared some more debris as she told him, “Mama would often come down here in the late afternoon after Papa and Maxim were gone. She used to talk to the trees she planted for us. She would whisper her hopes and dreams to them. She often prayed Maxim would forgive her for not protecting him the day Ivan came here looking for trouble. I told her there was nothing anyone could do that would have made a difference but she always said it was killing her that she never tried.” She paused then looked up at him. “I really hope he can rebuild this place to its former glory and go beyond what our father did. That would make the last fifteen years, worth the pain.”
Maxim dropped to his knees beside her.
Zeta hadn’t seen him until then.
He took both her hands in his. “I will rebuild this place, for her and for you. You gave me hope while I was in prison. Hell, you gave us all hope. These men deserve a second chance and you deserve a chance to find your own happy ever after. Misha has asked my permission to marry you. I told him I would be honored to give it.”
Zeta gasped then looked over at Misha.
He raised his hands up in a prayer motion, as his eyes pleaded with her to say yes.
Zeta smiled at him as she nodded her head. Then she turned to her brother. “Thank you.” She leaned closer and kissed his cheek. “Make our parents proud.”
Misha took her hand and helped her to her feet. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and led her to his vehicle. Getting in the backseat with him, she laid her head on his strong shoulder. “I love you and I would be proud to become your wife. I still don’t want your kingdom though. All I want is you.”
“I know that sweetheart.” Misha smiled. “I know that.”
