“Well, your place is kinda small for all three of us, Daddy.” Danny struggled with a moment, and then added, in heroic sacrifice, “I suppose I could give away a few of my toys.”
“There’s no need for that,” Daddy said, smiling. He cast a sideways look at Jane. “He does have a point. Perhaps we should look for a house.”
Jane’s eyes sparkled even brighter. “Next to the sea?”
“Of course.” Daddy hesitated, rubbing at the back of his neck in a funny, awkward kind of way. “And maybe… with some extra room? Just in case we need it. Ah, in future. Perhaps.”
“Yes.” Jane’s voice went kinda squeaky, like she was having trouble getting her breath. “Some extra room. To grow into.”
Danny looked between them. “Are you guys talking in code?”
Daddy’s eyes were bright now too, shining gold. “Perhaps… two extra rooms?”
“Three,” Jane breathed. “At least.”
Daddy laughed in a way that Danny had never heard before. Dropping his ice cream, he seized Jane round the waist, twirling her right off the ground. She laughed too, kissing his mouth.
“Maybe even four,” she murmured.
Danny worked it out at last, and his stomach dropped.
“Oh, no.” He let out a loud, heartfelt groan. “Not more brothers and sisters!”
