The Alien Explorer's Love

  Probably not, she thought. It was a little bit intoxicating. I'm as far from home as any human has ever been.

  Resting her forehead against whatever passed for glass on the ship, she smiled sadly and waved down at the sights below. Margaret was down there, somewhere, putting her life back together. It wouldn't be too difficult for her, they'd made sure of that. Jaranak had left her all the money they didn't need, and that would be enough to make Margaret quietly wealthy. She and Captain Hennessey would be set for life now, and Lilly could have been too. Instead, she'd chosen to leave it all behind.

  The planet receded slowly as the Far Hunter accelerated out of Earth's gravity. America vanished around the curve of the planet, and that was that. She might never see it again now that she'd left it behind.

  "Regretting your choice?" Jaranak's hands circled her waist from behind, and he pulled her back against his broad chest. His face appeared next to hers in the glass, and Lilly shook her head as she met his reflected gaze.

  "Never," she told him firmly. "But now I know how my parents must have felt every time they left port. They knew they might never see their home again, and neither might I. It's a sad feeling."

  "I'll bring you back to visit," Jaranak promised. "As often as you want."

  "I know you will," she told him with a smile. "You'll take good care of me, you've proved that already. But I don't think it'll be for some time. I want to see some alien planets first, remember. And I want to see your home, too."

  His chuckle vibrated through her, and that felt good. Like home. She snuggled back into him, luxuriating in the feel of her man. Closing her eyes, she let herself feel the warmth of his body, the strength of him, and the tender compassion in his grip.

  Jaranak nuzzled her neck, kissing it softly before he answered. His voice was a low whisper in her ear.

  "You'll get your chance to explore," Jaranak promised her. "Together, we'll see the universe, one star at a time."

  "And I'm planning on enjoying every second of it," she said, turning in his arms and standing on tiptoes to kiss him. His powerful arms lifted and spun her, and they both laughed together. Lilly forgot all about her doubts as she clung to him.

  This was home. Earth would always be there for her, but in all the wide galaxy, in the arms of her beloved was the only place she wanted to be.
