'I guess this is where I find out where my new life begins?' Nick ripped open the smaller envelope, and pulled out the one-way ticket. He smiled to himself as he checked the destination. 'Really?'
'We've set you up in a rented apartment for the first six months. All paid for in advance. The details are all in the second envelope. What you decide to do after that is up to you.'
Nick tore it open and tipped the contents into his free hand. Among the documents was a maroon passport. He flicked it open to the back page, and found a younger-looking photo of himself against a name he didn't recognise.
'Your new identity,' said Blake.
'That's going to take some getting used to.'
'It won't take as long as you think. Now come on, we need to get you checked in.'
Nick slumped off in the direction of the rows of queues snaking towards a line of check-in desks, bag slung over his shoulder. When he returned, Blake walked with him to the departure lounge.
'This is it, Nick. The start of your new adventure. Thank you for everything you've done, and good luck.'
An hour later, Nick was sitting on a plane, a seatbelt strapped tightly across his lap, staring out a small window at the damp runway. A middle-aged businessman wearing overpowering aftershave and a crumpled white shirt settled in beside him.
'Is it your first visit to Brazil?' he asked, peering past Nick to see through the window.
'Yes,' he replied, not feeling at all inclined to strike up conversation with a stranger.
'Well, Rio is beautiful at this time of year. I'm sure you'll love it.'
'I'm sure you're right.' Nick smoothed out the photo that Lucy had given him on his knee. He traced the features of her face with his finger, recalling how the sun had warmed their bodies as they lay on the cool grass, enjoying the alcohol buzz from the wine.
The roar of engines accompanied the sensation of bumpy movement forward. Nick closed his eyes and let his head fall against the back of the seat as the aircraft rumbled across the runway, gathering speed. And then he felt the seat punch him in the back with the acceleration of the plane. In less than a minute, the tyres lifted from the ground, and they were away, powering free from the earth's pull and soaring high into the sky.
