About the Author
“We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love.” - Dr. Seuss
Almost four years ago…
Of course, today of all days, my roommate and best friend, Zach, is running late. According to the voicemail he left moments ago, he had gotten caught up in meetings and was now stuck in traffic. I feel bad for him because I know he’s somewhat anxious about today. Okay, so maybe somewhat is a bit of an understatement. His younger sister, Danielle, is finally coming home after years of being on the run. I can’t imagine what she went through, losing the love of her life at such a young age, but I also can’t imagine leaving my life behind without a word. My family is my world.
I check my phone and realize I have enough time to take a quick shower to wash off the shit day I had at work before heading to meet my sisters for dinner. I strip off my dress shirt and throw it on the floor before making my way to the bathroom in the hall.
I reach to turn the shower on when there is a knock on the door. Of course, she’s here before he is. Or maybe it’s just our luck and it’s just one of those annoying salesmen selling something stupid like vacuums.
I open the door.
Holy shit!
I’m standing face-to-face with the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Her hand is raised as if she had planned to knock again, but she quickly brings it down in front of her. She looks down at her phone before glancing back at me.
Maybe she’s lost. Wouldn’t that be my lucky day?
Say something, Ky.
My eyes travel up and down her perfect body.
Her eyes are as blue as the hope diamond the old lady threw off the boat at the end of Titanic.
Those lips…I wonder what they would feel like against my skin, what they taste like, what they would look like swollen from my kisses.
And don’t even get me started with her curves.
A slight blush appears on her cheeks, and I realize she caught me checking her out. She might just be as affected by me as I am her.
Moments have passed, and neither of us speaks. Who is this gorgeous brunette, and why is she on my front porch? I raise an eyebrow at her, seeing if she is going to talk first. I realize I haven’t said anything either, but she has me a little speechless.
“I’m sorry, I must have the wrong place. I was looking for my brother, Zach Jacobs.”
Oh, fuck. No way!
I’ve seen plenty of photos of Zach’s little sister over the years, but this woman is definitely not the same girl whose pictures are on the wall in our living room. How did I not see the resemblance before? I smile at her.
“You’re Danielle?”
She shrugs, as if she’s unsure of her own identity. “Dani, yes.”
I extend my hand to shake hers. “I’m Kyler, Kyler Lawson, your brother’s best friend.”
She places her hand in mine, shaking it, and I feel a jolt of electricity rip through my body.
She’s staring at me still. Was it something I said? I look down and realize I’m standing in the doorway shirtless. Do I make her nervous? I need to tell my dick to stand down before this introduction turns a little embarrassing.
“Zach should be home any minute. He got held up at work,” I try to reassure her. “Why don’t you come in?”
I open the door wider and step to the side to allow her to enter the house. As she walks past me, I inhale a whiff of her scent, and it’s almost intoxicating. I need to relax.
“So, you just hang out at my brother’s house when he’s not here?” She tilts her head, confused.
Oh right, Zach explained that he forgot to mention two rather essential facts about his life now on the phone—that I live here, as does Haylee, who also happens to be not just his sister’s best friend, but the love of his life.
Don’t mention Haylee, don’t mention Haylee, I tell myself over and over.
I can’t fuck this up on the first day. Zach said that he and Hails would come clean to Dani about their relationship when the time came. I hope it doesn’t backfire on them.
“Oh no, I live here too.”
Her eyes widen. I hope that won’t be a problem. She turns away from me, and I let out the breath I didn’t realize I was holding with her proximity. She begins to look around the room.
“Well, I need to get in the shower and head out. Feel free to make yourself at home, and just yell if you need anything before I leave,” I tell her.
As I walk toward the bathroom, I see that she has found the collages of photos Haylee had put together and insisted we hang “to make the place homier.” She doesn’t acknowledge me leaving, but that’s okay. Here’s hoping seeing those memories doesn’t force her to run before Zach gets home. I don’t want to overstep my bounds, so I’ll give her space till he gets home. I’m not sure how I would explain to Zach and Hails if I were to come out of the shower and find the front door wide open and no sign of Dani.
Once I’m safely in the bathroom, I grip the countertop. “Get your shit together, Lawson. A girl has never affected you like this. She’s just a girl.”
There is something different about this girl; I can feel it. But what if she’s the girl? I quickly turn on the shower, shaking that thought off, and push my new roommate to the back of my mind before I end up being late for dinner.
I feel a warm body press against me—well, mainly her ass pressing into my morning wood. My arm is draped over her, just like always. I love having this woman in my arms when I fall asleep at night and when I wake up in the morning. My fingers lightly brush down her sides.
“Five more minutes,” she moans as she snuggles deeper into me.
I groan as she wiggles her ass against me. Without looking at her face, I know she’s wearing a smile, knowing what she is doing to me. My fingers trail from her side to her belly and slowly travel under her shirt—my shirt, to be exact. She loves to sleep in my shirts, and let’s be honest, I love seeing her in them. Well, I’d rather see her in nothing at all, but if she is clothed, I love her in mine.
She leans into my touch as my thumb brushes across her hardened nipples. She whines when I remove my hand from under her shirt and use it to brush the hair off her neck. My nose grazes against her skin, inhaling her vanilla scent. That scent is ingrained in my
mind for life.
Fooling around with Dani in the morning always reminds me of the first time I had her in my bed, the day that she agreed to be mine. That was one of the happiest days of my life. That is, until tomorrow, our wedding day. It seems like just yesterday she arrived on our front porch, or we shared our first kiss in the kitchen, or I was down on one knee in front of our family and friends at Lucky’s asking her to my wife.
I pepper kisses along her neck and feel her pulse increase under my tongue. Dani reaches her arm back, playing with the hairs on the nape of my neck. Her fingernails dig into my scalp, exerting a loud moan from my mouth. I welcome the burn from the grip she has on my hair, and I thrust my erection in her back.
My hand palms her stomach and slowly slides into her boy short panties, finding my girl already wet for me. She gasps as I slowly drag my fingers down her slit before sliding two fingers inside her. Once she is primed and ready, I slip her panties down her thighs and discard them to the floor before doing the same with my boxers. Dani rolls to her back, and I nestle between her legs and rub my cock back and forth across her slick center.
“This is the last time I get to do this before we’re married.”
“Well, then, Mr. Lawson, what are you wait…”
I don’t let her finish her sentence before I slide into her hard.
I walk into our en suite bathroom and lean against the doorframe, my arms and ankles crossed while I watch Dani apply the last of her makeup. She is absolutely breathtaking. I tell her all the time that she doesn’t need to wear it, and on most days, she goes for what she calls the “natural look,” but tonight is a special occasion.
“You’re gawking, babe.” Dani doesn’t even turn to me but is watching me in the mirror.
There’s no way to deny it; I was most definitely gawking at my fiancée. How could I not, though, when she’s standing at the counter in her matching lace bra and panty set, along with heels?
I close the distance between us and place one hand on her hip while the other brushes her brown curly hair off the side of her shoulder.
“Can you blame me? I mean, look at how gorgeous you are. I am the luckiest man in the world.” My fingers trace her exposed collarbone, and she visibly shivers.
I love the way I affect her. I press soft kisses along her shoulder and work my way up to her sweet spot. Dani squirms out of my arms and spins around to face me. She places her manicured hand on my chest and pushes me back. I frown at the distance between us.
“Uh-uh. We are not about to be late for our rehearsal dinner. I need to finish getting ready.” She eyes me up and down and raises her eyebrows at me. “And it looks like you do too.”
I move to the side and look in the mirror, messing with my hair a little bit. “What are you talking about? I look sexy. Don’t I?”
She nibbles on her lip.
I wrap my arms around her and rest my chin on her bare shoulder. “We are the best-looking couple around.”
She throws her head back in laughter. “Don’t let my brother hear you say that. You know he would beg to differ.”
My best friend is hilarious. He comes off cocky, but he really is the nicest and sweetest guy I know. I admire the way he is with his wife and daughter, and I hope that I can be half the man he is. It’s crazy to think about the revolving door of women I saw Zach with—never the same girl twice—when we first met to now. He lives and breathes those two girls. Every time I see Dani holding our goddaughter, I can’t help but imagine how amazing she will be as a mother, how beautiful she will look with her growing belly.
Dani looks up at me and tilts her head back as I dip my head down, brushing my lips against hers. She allows my tongue to slip into her mouth and gently massages mine with hers. This woman completely consumes me, and I could kiss her forever. After tomorrow, I will. I spin her in my arms so we are now facing each other. Dani clings to my shirt as we stand in our bathroom, making out. I slide my hands down over her ass and pull her closer to me, lifting her onto the countertop. She jolts at the cold porcelain against her bare skin but continues kissing me. I am ready to unzip my pants and slide her panties to the side. Instead, she releases my shirt and pushes my chest back again.
“Okay. Okay. Stop distracting me and get out of here before I make a complete mess of my makeup and have to redo it. Then we will definitely be late.”
I go in for one last quick peck before turning around to leave her to finish getting ready.
Once I’m in the bedroom, I hear her yell, “Don’t forget your tie!”
Ahh, yes. Tonight, we have the wedding rehearsal itself, although I still don’t understand why we have to practice saying “I do.” Then we are having a nice dinner down by the water, where we will say our last goodbyes before we say I do tomorrow. Dani will be staying at Haylee and Zach’s house tonight while Zach stays here. It will be just like old times with my roommate—although more like back in our college days, pre-girlfriends and kids. If you had told me all those years ago that he and I would be about to become brothers-in-law and he a father, we both probably never would have believed it.
“Oh, I spoke with Aria not long ago, and they are stuck in traffic. They don’t think they’ll make it to the rehearsal but are trying,” Dani tells me.
“I can only imagine being stuck in traffic on 95 with all of them in on one car.”
I stand in front of my side of the closet and hold two ties in my hand, trying to decide when I hear the clicking of Dani’s heels on the hardwood floor. I spin around and hold the two choices up.
“Which do you like better?”
Her mouth twists to the side, one of the cute expressions she has when she’s thinking. “Go with the red one.”
My mouth turns up in a smile. “So, we’re going to be that matchy-matchy couple, huh?”
She nods dramatically. “Hell yes, we are. Would you expect anything less?”
I drape the red tie around my neck, adjusting my collar, and walk over to the mirror to tie it while she walks toward the closet and grabs the red sleeveless dress from the hanger.
“Nope, I wouldn’t dare dream of it.”
I don’t have to look at her face to know she is rolling her eyes. In the mirror, I watch her step into the red silk dress and shimmy it over her hips, suddenly saddened by the loss of seeing her ass but now loving the view of the way the material clings to her curves.
I clear my throat, trying to force myself to focus and tie my tie.
“Psstttt.”
I look up in the mirror and see Dani now staring at me, her blue eyes boring into my soul.
“If you’re done staring and fantasizing, can you come zipper this dress so that we can go?”
“Aye, aye, boss.” I wink in the mirror and head toward her. I slowly zip up the dress and spin her in my arms. “I love you so much, Danielle Jacobs. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
Her smile shines brightly, and her eyes fill with unshed tears. “I love you too.”
I press my lips against her forehead and let them linger on her skin as I close my eyes and breathe her in. The moment is broken when my phone begins to play the sound of a motorcycle engine revving, which is the annoying ringtone Zach set on my phone as his caller ID. I groan and grab my phone off the bed.
Before I get the chance to say hello, my best friend’s voice bellows through. “Stop doing whatever it is you were doing and hit the road. We’re all on our way to the church, so get your ass moving.”
I can’t hide my laughter at his dad tone—like he will actually ever use that tone with Emme. That little girl has him wrapped around her tiny fingers.
“As much as I’d love to continue this, we should get on the road,” I say.
Dani rubs her finger along her lips in the mirror, and I want nothing more than to taste them.
“Ha,” she laughs. “Let me guess. That was my brother, and he yelled at you.”
“Damn, baby, I’m not sure who you know better—him or me?”
/>
She saunters over to me and wraps her arms around her neck. “Definitely you. Come on, let’s go.”
“Why do you always insist on ordering different things if you are just going to pick off my plate?” I swat my fiancé’s hand for what seems to be the millionth time as he brings the fork full of penne pasta to his mouth. Fiancé. I never get tired of calling Kyler that. It still feels a little surreal that our wedding day is tomorrow. I used to worry that I would wake up and it would all be a dream. Kyler is the sweetest, sexiest, funniest man, and out of all the women in the world, he picked me. It didn’t bother him that I was broken when we met. He made me, and still makes me, a better person. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with this man.
“What’s the point in doing that when I can just steal some of yours? Remember, babe, what’s mine is yours.”
“Oh, is that right?” I quirk an eyebrow at him. “Well, then you won’t mind if I take a bite of yours.”
I reach for a piece of his cut filet mignon and slowly bring the fork to my lips. I expect him to stop me—this man takes his steak very seriously—but he doesn’t. Whenever I tried in the past to take something off his plate, he claimed he was a growing boy.
“Mmm, this is so good.” Why on earth would Ky want some of this pasta when he has that?
Kyler leans over and brushes his lips against my ears. “Baby, I’m going to need you to not make noises like that in public. Otherwise, I might need to take you somewhere a little private.”
I smile and reach in front of him, stealing another piece of steak from his plate. Just to mess with him, although I can’t really say I’m faking it, I moan again. This time though, I look right at him as I do it.
