“Don’t borrow tomorrow’s trouble’s today, Max,” his voice sounds ancient and tired. “For now, get some rest safe in the knowledge that he – and everyone here – are protected.”

When I hesitate again, his voice takes on that familiar drill sergeant tone I’d hated so much when I was a kid. Right now, I love it so much I’m in danger of hugging him again.

Neither of us could survive that.

“Go to bed, Max,” he growls. “Now. We’ll talk tomorrow.”

And with that, as every inch of my weary body screams in protest, I begin the long climb up the winding staircase to my room. It’s not far at all, but for now it might as well be Mount Everest.

Father Gabriel might be back, but it seems like he brought a piece of hell home with him.

Even as a small bead of fear takes root in my stomach, I force myself to exhale.

He’s back. I know how to fight demons on earth.

  A few hours sleep?

I’ll be ready to dance with the devil again.
