by Richmal Crompton

“Oh, yes, I’ve just been on the telephone about it. I shall have to get moving quickly but I’ve got it all right.”

“What job is it?” said Henry.

“Taking part in an Antarctic expedition.”

“Gosh!” breathed William. “An Antarctic expedition!”

“Yes . . . I went on one with these same chaps a few years ago and they’d decided on another and wanted me to join them.”

“You—you’ve axshully been on an Antarctic expedition?”

  “Yes.”

  “Did you have adventures?”

  “Quite a few.”

  “Oh, tell us.”

  Mr Bolton smiled.

“All right.” He lit his pipe and settled down as comfortably as he could on the flour-bin. “Where shall I begin?”

  “At the beginning,” said William.

“Very well. . . We got to the Weddle Sea all right. Had a close shave with a glacier and nearly got caught in an icepack . . . then the real stuff began. You couldn’t see anything but snow and ice and you could hardly see them for the blizzard. Two of the sledges fell into a crevasse and we thought we were never going to get them out. Then the dogs began to fall sick . . .”

The four boys sat there, eyes fixed on him, bodies tensed. The attic, with its store of junk, had vanished. They were out in the snow and ice, the blizzards and gales, lost to everything but the white frozen world of the Antarctic . . .

Thank you to all those who helped me put together this book. This project, of scanning and digitizing as many of the William books I could, began months ago, and may never have been completed without all those who helped me.

A huge thank you to golux, who proofread all but one chapter of this book; without him taking active interest in this project, I may not have been motivated enough to start actively scanning and digitizing once again.

Thank you to all of you who read this as well! Your reading this book means that the work of those who helped me, as well as of myself, didn’t go to waste.

If you feel that you can help, in any way, or have any questions or suggestions, please contact me.
