“There was no way we were going to let that happen,” I told Leah. Theo picked up the whiskey glass that was set in front of him and raised it up.
“Here’s to Clark’s quick thinking, Rosie’s lightning grip, and the courage of everyone at this table, and those who had to go home,” Theo toasted. We all raised our glasses to the toast.
After taking a drink, I looked around the table at the phenomenal humans and cat girls in my life. Although a few of the cat girls couldn’t be present, I knew they were there still. The future of VGS was on a new path, UsForThem had a wildly successful night, and Belavi outdid itself again. The thought brought a smile to my face, and I held my drink up once more.
A life like the one I was living deserved a second toast.

From the shadows
I slipped out of the back of the event room without being noticed. Everyone’s eyes were riveted on the fuckery happening on the stage. Trevor had really botched shit up. He had been Omnicorp’s last resort to knock Clark, and his little crew off their high horses, but he had failed. That opened up the opportunity for me to step up, however. I found the nearest exit and left the building. When I was out on the street, I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed. The other end of the line rang three times before I heard a gruff voice.
“Hello.” This man was no one I wanted to piss off, so I had to be careful about how I broke the news.
“Jag failed,” I replied. There was a deafening silence for a few moments before the man continued.
“How bad is it?” His voice was surprisingly calm, but I could picture him on the other end of the line just seething with rage.
“He is in custody, the company has been blamed for his actions, and the contract is lost.” No reason to beat around the bush.
“Fuck!” he yelled into the phone. I could hear his fist slam down on something. I decided now was as good a time as any to secure my position.
“Look, I have an idea,” I spoke quickly. “That whole fucking crew has a chink in their armor that nobody has seemed to take notice of yet. I’m offering my services to you in order to do so.”
“You are just one of the little add-ons that Jag likes to have tag along on his jobs. Why do I give a shit if you have an idea?” the man barked.
“Because it’s my idea that can get your fuckshow of an operation back on track,” I yelled back at him. “Or you can feel free to just whine your way to bankruptcy if you’d like to be a dick about it.”
The man was silent for a moment, no doubt weighing his options.
“How soon can you come in?” He had calmed his voice, but I could still hear the anger behind his words.
“It’ll take me three days to get there,” I told him.
“Fine, but just remember, I don’t fucking like outsiders,” the man sniped.
“You’re about to, being that your ‘insiders’ have been doing such a bang-up job destroying your shit.” My use of sarcasm had always been one of my best skills.
“We’ll see. You have three days,” the man said and hung up the phone.
I had done it. I’d gotten myself in the position I should have been in this whole time.
I strolled down the dark Elko city street, smiling to myself. I’d parked a car a few blocks down but was enjoying the warm night air. I was satisfied with my decision to hang in the background while Trevor went down in flames. Now, I had the opportunity to do things my way. It didn’t matter if the people I was working for weren’t aware that I had my own motive for wanting to annihilate everything Clark and his crew had built.
A Note from the Author
Hey, if you got here, I just want you to know that you’re awesome! I wrote this book just for someone like you, and if you want another one, it is super important that you leave a review.
The more reviews this book gets, the more likely it is there will be a sequel to it. After all, I’m only human, and you have no idea how far a simple “your book was great!” goes to brighten my day.
Also, if you want to know when the sequel comes out, you absolutely must join my Facebook group and follow me on Amazon. Doing one won’t be enough because it relies on either Facebook or Amazon telling you the book is out, and they might not do it.
You might miss out on all my books forever, if you only do one!
