Detective Jones was pissed because he knew he really couldn’t charge Ace with anything. All the guns were accounted for, he knew he could hold him for the next 48 hours until ballistics came back.

“I do have a case and I’m charging Amir with Murder,” Jones spat. “Cuff his ass,” he said before walking off.

Aaliyah turned to Ace, “Amir, don’t worry I’ll have you out before the sun is up,” she assured as she watched the man she loved being cuffed.

  *

Detective Jones interrogated Ace for hours and for hours Ace had repeated the same story over and over again. He knew they were trying to get him to slip up but that was something he wasn’t going to do. The gun was registered and being that he had no prior felonies he knew the case would be dismissed along with the fact that their dumb asses had forgotten to read him his rights.

  *

“Fuck!” Detective Jones spat as he slammed the folder down on his desk. Ballistics had come back and Amir’s finger prints were only on the gun registered to him and his home. The bullet that killed Detective Miles didn’t come from Ace’s gun; in fact it had come from other dead victim. What took the cake was when the finger prints came back to the second dead victim, it belonged to a James Miles the same James Miles that Hampton Police Department had been looking for, for over five years now.

Aaliyah stormed into Jones’ office, “I demand you release my client now. You have nothing to hold him on and you were so into arresting him you all forgot to read him his rights. An automatic dismissal,” she said.

“I’m sorry, sir, I tried stopping her but she slipped pass,” Officer White said.

“It’s fine, have someone release Johnson. This case is closed,” Jones said. Aaliyah could tell that he was pissed but she didn’t give a fuck about him or his feelings. Amir was being released and that’s all that mattered to her.

Aaliyah stood outside waiting for Ace to walk out the door. When he stepped outside the police station she ran into his arms and hugged him tight. “Are you okay? Did they do anything to you?” She asked.

“Babe, I’m fine and no they didn’t do shit to me,” Ace laughed. “You play no games,” Ace joked.

“When it comes to you or any other case I take on I have no choice but to bring my A game,” she smiled as they walked hand in hand to her awaiting car. “Where are we going?” She asked as Ace helped her into the passenger seat. He closed the door and walked around to the driver’s seat and climbed in before answering her question.

“Home to shower and change before heading to Florida to pick up our girls,” he answered started the car and pulling off.

“Did he really just say our girls?” She thought smiling. Savanna and Serenity wasn’t her daughters, but couldn’t anyone tell her any different. She had grown to love them as if she had birthed them herself.

“Did you say to put up our girls?” Aaliyah asked. Ace nodded his head up and down.

“They miss you and have been asking about you something crazy. They rather I left them with you than their grandmother,” answered Ace.

As Ace stopped at a red light he took this time to look over at Aaliyah and wondered how did he get so lucky to find two soul mates? Or was it really luck or a curse?

  Chapter 20

Three years ago the game had been played totally different. But the game and the mothafuckas that were playing now wasn’t the same. There was no loyalty in the game or the streets anymore and no one respected the game codes. Ace knew there was plenty of money to be made but with all the hating and shooting each other up, how could you make anything? The respect was gone and Ace knew it was never coming back. Niggas were snitching left and right for a lesser sentence. Your best friends were now your enemies.

Ace knew this was only the beginning, but he couldn’t wait for it all to be over. His wife had been taken away from him. How much could he take? But he was determined to stop at nothing until Sunshine was brought home safely, where she belonged.

“Ace, I know your mind is running a mile a minute with many thoughts but I need for you to stay focused,” Boy said sitting in the driver’s seat. Jay and Boog were sitting in the back seat, while Ace occupied the passenger’s seat.

“Are you sure you wanna go in there alone?” Boy asked looking over at Ace.

“I have no choice. My wife life depends on it,” Ace answered while running his hand over his face. “If I’m not out in twenty minutes I want y’all niggas to come in blasting. I don’t want that nigga leaving here alive.” He finished. Everyone in the car nodded their heads.

Ace looked around and respected the fact that his niggas was holding him down. He had told them many times that they could walk away because he felt what he was going through was personal and had nothing to do with any of them, but they stayed right by his side through it all. “Now that’s what you call a true friendship and loyalty.” Ace thought.

“Ace we can’t kill this mothafucka until we are sure Sunshine is alive,” Boog said.

“It’s time for him to go. I’m sick and tired of the games and in order for me to get to who’s behind the kidnapping of Sunshine the middle man has got to go,” Ace said.

Serenity, Savanna, and Aaliyah quickly filled his mind. The thought of never seeing them again tore him up inside and out.

“Don’t think like that,” Boy said reading Ace’s face. He remembered having those same thoughts when he was running crazy in the streets. “Do what you gotta do so that you can go home to ya babies.” He said.

“Boy, we all know how this game can go. You win some and you lose some,” Ace said. “And I feel as if I’m goin’ to lose this one here tonight,” he finished.

“You gonna let the game write your ending for you or are you gonna write it yo mothafuckin’ self?” Jay asked. “Shit, you’ve made it too far to give up now. There’s still cards to be played don’t fold now.” He finished.

Ace opened the car door and climbed out. Everyone looked at each other wondering what the fuck Ace was doing. They watched him reach into his pocket and pull his cell out. They knew he was calling his girls to hear their voices and to let them know how much his missed them just in case he didn’t make it out tonight.

  *

Ace paced for a while trying to get his thoughts together. He never thought he would have to say goodbye the way he was about to, but he wanted his daughters and Aaliyah to let them know just how much he loved them. Ace reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell. He dialed Aaliyah’s cell and waited for her to answer. He knew it was late but he needed to hear her voice and get a few things off his chest.

Aaliyah picked up on the third ring and Ace could tell that he had just woke her from her sleep. “I’m sorry to wake you but I just needed to hear your voice,” he said into the phone.

“Babe, is everything okay?” She asked now fully awake.

“Everything is fine as could be. I just wanted to call to let you know just how much I love you,” he said.

“Amir, baby you’re scaring me. What’s goin’ on?” Aaliyah asked now pacing the floor.

“Nothing’s wrong. Where is Serenity and Savanna?”

“Right here sleeping with me,” she replied.

“Put me on speaker and place the phone to their ears.” Aaliyah did as she was told.

  “You’re on speaker,” she said.

“I just want you girls to know that daddy loves you and always will,” Ace said getting choked up.

“They’re smiling in their sleep,” Aaliyah told Ace.

Ace and Aaliyah talked for a few more minutes before he disconnected the call. He jumped back in the ride and told his boys that he was ready to go and asked them to look after his girls if anything was to go wrong tonight. They all agreed as they once again watched Ace exit the car. He walked around the trunk and grabbed both bags and walked the short distan
ce to the house he was supposed to meet the Grim Reaper in.

  *

Ace rushed into the poorly looking house, his heart was beating faster than normal. This was supposed to be the end but Ace knew it wasn’t. But he was tired of playing game with the Grim Reaper and anyone else that had been taking him for a joke. He had done everything that was asked of him and now he wanted his wife back.

The house was dark inside and out. “Stop where you are,” the Grim Reaper said and Ace did as he was told.

“I have done everything you asked of me and tonight this so called game you’ve been enjoying ends now,” Ace said with so much base in his voice that it echoed throughout the empty house.

“You have, but you know how when Mario clears the last world and thinks it’s over? Only to be surprised that there’s another world he had to pass in order to save the princess? Well you have two more worlds to clear before you reunite with your beloved Sunshine,” the Grim Reaper laughed pissing Ace off. “That’s if you live long enough to attempt to pass the next “worlds” he finished laughing even more.

“You got that. Just let me hear my wife’s voice and we can continue playing your game,” Ace said desperately wanting to hear Sunshine’s voice.

“You know, Ace I can do that for you. I think that will give you the little push to continue doing what you’re doing,” the Grim Reaper said flipping on the lights. Ace let his eyes adjust to the lights as he watched the Grim Reaper dial away on his cell phone. He placed the phone to his ear with a grim sitting on his face. Ace wanted to smack the shit out of him but he didn’t because he knew it wouldn’t be a good idea, when he still didn’t have proof if Sunshine was alive or dead. “I hope you aren’t over there thinking about doing something funny,” the grim reaper grinned as he removed the phone from his ear.

“I don’t have time for the bullshit!” Ace yelled. “Now make the call so that I can speak to my wife.”

“Hello? Yeah. Put that bitch on. She gets two minutes,” he said into the phone. The Grim Reaper put the phone on speaker. Ace’s heart was beating at a rapid pace in his chest while the rest of his body felt weak.

“Ace!” Sunshine whispered into the phone. Hearing her voice for the first time in three years was like music to his ears. It was a bittersweet moment that Ace wanted to last forever but knew it wouldn’t.

“Baby please, tell me that you are okay,” Ace said reaching for the phone. The Grim Reaper jerked his hand back shaking his head no.

“Ace, I need for you to do what they say or they are going to kill me,” Sunshine said into the phone.

“I got you baby. I’m gonna do whatever I have to do to get you back home where you belong,” Ace said.

“How are the girls?” Sunshine asked and Ace could tell that she had started crying.

“They are fine but we all will be reunited real soon,” Ace assured.

“Ace, do you still love me?” Sunshine asked.

“Sunshine, me being here should answer that question,” Ace said. “But to answer your question, yes I still do love you.” He said.

“Times up,” the Grim Reaper said snatching his phone back and taking it off speaker. “Yo, I’ll call you back in about ten minutes,” he said into the phone. He listened for a while before disconnecting the call.

Ace waited for him to hang up the phone before he jumped on him and started whooping his ass. He didn’t need the Grim Reaper anymore now that he had evidence that Sunshine was really alive and at this point he wanted him dead and gone. The Grim Reaper tried reaching for his gun, but the powerful blows Ace was sending his way stopped him from doing much of anything. He tried protecting his face but there was no use. Wherever Ace threw a punch it connected to its mark with power and force.

The Grim Reaper tried to talk, but Ace punched him in his mouth so hard he broke a few of his teeth in the process. Ace was huffing and puffing, but he never stopped taking all his built up frustration and anger out on the Reaper’s body. He was using the Grim Reaper’s body as if he was in the gym working out. The Grim Reaper was his punching bag.

The ringing of the Reaper’s cell phone brought Ace from his daze, his chest heaved up and down as he now stood over the mothafucka who called himself “The Grim Reaper” Ace had beat his ass to death with his bare hands. Ace reached into the Reaper’s pocket and pulled out the cell phone.

When he looked at the caller ID his heart damn near stopped when he read the name flashing across the screen. “It can’t be.” He thought holding the phone closer to his face. He wanted to make sure he was reading the name right. The phone stopped ringing and Ace was still in shock. The phone started ringing again and being that he wanted to be sure he answered the phone.

“Hello?” The voice on the other end said. “Hello? Ayo, Mark, what the fuck taking you so long?” He asked. Ace recognized the voice, but before he could do or say anything, shots rang out.
