Darkness Ahead of Us | Book 1 | Darkness Within Page 17

by Spencer, Leif

Sarah put a hand on Anna’s shoulder. “Breathe. You’re always so quick to panic. I have a gun. We have Oreo. I’m sure we can—”

“What? Barricade the flat? You’ve met her. She’s…she’ll try and kill us.” Anna pinched the bridge of her nose. She’d tried so hard to make this flat safe for the coming months. Make it safe for herself and her sister to wait for the worst to pass.

She’d trusted her instincts and given it her best. But the universe wasn’t on her side. They needed to pack their bags. Perhaps they could go back to Colchester. Back to Sarah’s house.

“Anna?” Sarah grabbed her shoulders and forced Anna to look at her. “It’ll be okay. We’ll be fine.”

Anna exhaled slowly and nodded. Her sister was right. They’d have to find a new place to stay, but at least they were together.

Anna squeezed Sarah’s hand and smiled. “We’ll figure it out. One day at a time.”

The weather was mild. It wouldn’t take them long to get to Ware. A farmhouse would be harder to defend, but it was more likely to have resources. Tom would be happy to see James. He was carrying his laptop under his arm—still convinced he could get some electronics to work with the right equipment. He was still a little boy, but he’d survive.

Chris would make sure of it. She took Tom’s hand in hers. His grip tight, he looked at her with red-rimmed eyes.

  “What is it?” Chris asked.

“Are you feeling okay?” Tom asked.

“I’m fine. Don’t worry about me, sweetie.” She flashed him a reassuring smile. Her head still pounded, but she’d feel better in a few days.

She’d ruined things with Anna, but they’d find somewhere else to stay. She was a nurse. A valuable addition to any group of survivors. She was confident they’d find a new shelter. A new place where nobody knew of her past. Of Mike and Lester. Or of what had just happened with the Greene sisters.

Chris would try hard to fit in and keep Tom safe.

They’d move on, but Chris would never forget Anna’s kindness. She’d never forget the small flat on Fifth Avenue, and perhaps one day, they’d meet again…
