They say any work can be a mystery if you do it with care and a prayer in your heart. I’m going to be a dressmaker—as good a dressmaker as Mefro Dominique. There’s no point in girls like me dreaming of wearing fine gowns, but I can dream of seeing my gowns turn a scamp like Maisetra Iulien into a grand lady. And Celeste can dream of learning real mysteries, not just selling charms in the market for half a teneir.
I planted two lavender bushes in the little bit of dirt back behind Mefro Dominique’s home. My home. Next summer I’ll turn them into lavender water, using Aunt Gaita’s charms to bless it. If another bad floodtide comes, they’ll be washed away, but I’ll have enough set aside to keep our dreams sweet and strong while they grow again. Celeste and I have a lot of dreaming to do.
