  CHAPTER ONE

  ~

Maverick thought it might just be his lucky day as he sat on the rocky outcrop at the top of the waterfall and took in the scene below. The water nymph that he’d come across bathing in the clear blue green waters below was a sight for sore eyes on such a beautiful summers day, and with the week that he’d had he could use this kind of distraction.

This part of pack land was his favourite, picturesque and serene, and made even more enticing when he’d found her butt naked bathing in the rock pool at the bottom of Maiden Falls. Her long blonde hair plastered down the milky white skin of her back as she rose out of the water like a vision from a really good dream that he’d once had.

He liked to think of himself as a gentleman most of the time- but right now, he’d really love it if she turned round. It wasn’t as if he’d never seen a naked woman before- he had, many, it was just that this woman had brought his body to such a state of awareness that he was practically drooling on his own chin to see everything and more.

Maverick felt the loss when she dipped her body beneath the water once more, but with a kick of her legs, she was on her back, skimming the top of the water with her body as her hair fanned out around her, and everything that he wished to see was right there on show for him. He didn’t even notice the growl that rumbled through his chest until it was out there in the breeze…

He couldn’t hear the sudden intake of breath that denoted her eyes locking onto him over the sound of the water crashing down- but he saw her lips part a second before she jolted upwards in the water and covered her breasts with her folded arms, spinning in the water, and scowling in the rush to fury that made him want to laugh out loud.

If there was one thing his pack was used to, it was being naked- and he only wished that humans could find the same freedom in the act- especially now when he hadn’t has his fill of taking her in yet.

“Pervert!” She launched the firing shot of what he was sure was going to be a volley of them. Maverick was more than ready for each and every one of them.

“I came to swim and take in the view- you chose to put yourself in the picture,” Maverick tossed back down with the kind of killer smile that he knew from experience made woman weak kneed and open to his advances.

“Go away!” She snapped back- seemingly mor
e anxious about her lack of attire than open to his subtle charms. That was something that he needed to fix. He’d already imagined about ten different ways he’d like to take this woman.

  “I came for a swim-”

“Jog on,” she shot back, cutting him off.

“This is my land,” Maverick gave a small shrug off his broad shoulders. “I guess that makes you the trespasser.”

Janette eyed him with all of the mistrust that came with finding some pervert ogling your goodies. She considered the situation that she’d found herself in. Alone- miles from nowhere- and without her clothes for protection from his eyes, and he was eyeing her, she noted with disdain. The man hadn’t even had the decency to look away once.

“Then I’ll leave. Just, go away and let me get out,” Janette tossed up to him. She was blind to the fact that from where he sat he had a right royal view of everything that she had to offer, and she didn’t have enough hands to cover every little bit… too many curves and not enough hands- life sucked and so did he for being a peeping-tom.

“I can’t do that,” Maverick tried to looked pained, but he didn’t quite pull it off, it was the amusement in his eyes, even from that distance, that told her he was more than enjoying himself. “As this is my land, if anything should happen to you-”

“Oh, don’t give me that,” Janette snapped back. She knew the type, she could write the book on this guy and it wouldn’t be a happily ever after. He was a player- it was written all over his face and that muscled body- and yes she’d noticed, but she was trying her best to dismiss the fact.

“On my honour,” he gave a small bow of his head and she snorted her contempt for that answer.

“If you had any honour you wouldn’t have been spying on me in the first place.”

“Then you have to answer this question; should I have walked on knowing the danger that you were putting yourself in?” Maverick felt the hard slap of her words to his ego. Yes, he’d been spying, but he was a man of honour when it counted, and naked woman weren’t really when it counted in his book.

His beast had taken exception to her words too. The animal didn’t like to be caged at the best of times, but for some reason; she made it antsy within him.

“Danger, is it now?” She shot back, using her head to motion around her rather than her arms for fear that she would give him another floor show.

“There’s a downward drag near the waterfall that can sweep an unsuspecting swimmer right under the rocks and into a deep cave beneath it.” He offered the truth, and he’d been more than ready to leap into the water if she’d ventured too closely to that area…

“I don’t believe you,” she tipped up her up chin in a show of defiance, and yet he could see from the way that her eyes flicked from him to the waterfall and back again that she wasn’t entirely sure.

“I’d say give it a go, but I don’t feel like having to rescue you today,” Maverick shot back with a smile that was made to disarm her- it didn’t work, she still looked as if she was chewing a wasp.

“Maybe you should give it a go,” she snapped back, irritated that he was sitting there like the king of the rock and she was cowering in the water.

Having the upper hand had always been a thing for her, and right now she was playing with a low pair compared to his royal flush. She could take care of herself- of course she could- but the point is she had managed to walk into a situation where she’d put herself in danger- at a disadvantage, and all because she couldn’t resist the beauty of the damn pools.

  “I accept.”

Maverick pushed up to his feet and hooked his shirt from the waistband of his jeans, yanking it up and over his head to expose the rippling muscles beneath. This time, he did hear her sharp intake of breath from below. She’d offered him the challenge whether she knew it or not, and Maverick was never on to turn down a challenge- it was in his blood.

“What are you doing?” She took a few uncertain steps backwards and encountered a large, slick rock that almost had her over…

“You invited me in.” Maverick chuckled and offered her another one of those grins again- and she was sure that the summer sun glinted off of the whiteness of his perfect teeth…

“No, no, I…” Janette bit down on the next words as he bent at the waist and pushed the jeans down to his ankles. Her eyes took in the sight, and what a sight it was… “Oh,” she muttered, as he straightened up and his hard, thick length stood proud of a body, jutting out invitingly, and what a body it was; one that would shame a Greek God…

“Oh!” She rushed to look away. More than aware that she was staring- doing exactly what she’d accused him of moments earlier. The difference, she told herself, was that she hadn’t deliberately stripped off for his viewing pleasure.

“Here I come, ready or not,” he announced a moment before he leapt up from the rock and came downwards with the force of gravity into the pool below.

Her eyes snatched a look at him as he sailed through the air. Perfect- and the waterfall behind him making it the picture perfect moment that would lodge in her memory for years to come, of that she was certain.

Janette rushed to panic- snapping out of the moment; she was now wading towards the edge of the pool before his body even hit the water. The sound of the large splash, and the subsequent displacement of the water that hit her back, made her only too aware that he’d touched down…

Then- there was nothing as she’d mentally waited for the sound of him to break the surface once more… Maybe a gasp for air? Maybe a rip roaring victory shout as he surfaced…? But… nothing.

Janette shot a look back over her shoulder as she struggled through the water, the rocks that scattered the bottom causing her to slip, slide, and stub her toes- but she was determined to reach the bank. Her eyes found nothing, only the rippling from the water where the falls fell.

She widened her search of the area as her mind raced to the worst possible scenario. Guilt clawed at her mind as she’d been the one who had dared him to do it, and now he’d been swept away under the falls…

What was she supposed to do now?

The closer that she got to the bank the more uncertain that she was of what she was doing. Perhaps she should wade back over towards the falls and see if could find a trace of him there. He could have hit his head- he could have been swept under and need her help…

“Damn it, no.” She ground out between clenched teeth as she took that first step back towards the waterfall- not entirely sure what she planned to do for the poor guy when she got there.

Then her heart lodged in her throat when he launched right up in front of her, most of his upper body came out of the water like a damn whale saying its hello to a tourist ship…

Janette shrieked at the sight of him and tried to backtrack her steps, only to slip and slide once more on those pesky damn rocks, and she had to use her arms to stabilise herself in the water so that she didn’t submerge completely beneath it…

Damn it, damn him, damn every bloody thing!

“And here I am.” He grinned at her like the damn cat that got the canary- and anger rushed through her on fast wings as she pulled her fist back and then let him have it right on the nose…

“Yoooou…! Moron!” She let out the kind of shrill that only a shrew could love.

A heartbeat later and the pain of connecting with his thick head went through her hand, shot up her arm, and she yelped a good one before trying to shake it off. She cursed, grunted, and cursed some more.

If she could have a do-over then she knew that she should have hit him with a hefty jolt of her magic and not just put a little magic behind that punch- and yet she also knew that was a big no-no. Witches needed to be careful. Even in this modern era of so-called enlightenment and tolerance, witches were still shunned, still thought of as Devil worshipers, and sometimes even hunted for their skills.

He took a step towards her and she noted it. Her eyes snapped towards him- warning him not to take one more damn step as she hisse
d in annoyance. Then she felt it- that the tapping on her shields wasn’t her heart pounding against them to be set free, but a subtle warning that this man was supernatural by nature.

Damn, what have I walked into? She eyed him for a long moment with the trepidation that flooded through her.

Maverick knew men in his pack that didn’t hit that damn hard. He felt the tears rush to his eyes and the pain shoot through his head, as he reached up and cupped his nose with both hands. This woman was a wildcat- maybe a shifter- maybe not- he didn’t really have the option of scenting her at that precise moment in time to see if she had fur beneath that ivory skin, and those glorious curves…

“O-u-c-h,” his voice was blandness mixed with a small amount of annoyance. Hit by a damn girl- his beast made no bones about being ashamed of him.

Maverick tried to hold onto the growl that was beginning to roll through his chest. Now his beast wasn’t just antsy about her attack on his honour- it was miffed at the bruise to his ego too.

  CHAPTER TWO

  ~

“I think you broke my nose.” He growled out, but she didn’t much look like she gave a damn- she had a wild look in her eyes that told him to stay right where he was or risk her trying to throw another punch in his direction.

“I’ll break more than your damn nose if you so much as take another step.” Janette warned, pulling her magic into a tight knot within her and readying it for the moment that this shifter stepped out of line again.

Yep, she was a wildcat alright, but of what variety- that was what he needed to figure out.

“Ooo, feisty.” Maverick used his fingers to reset his nose- a not so subtle click that shot another jolt of pain right through him, and his eyes misted over again, but it wasn’t anything that he couldn’t handle- his brothers had broken his damn nose more times than he cared to remember.
