“Eliza, you’ve got to hurry,” Rissa says in the back.
“Give me a minute!” I scream in frustration.
“You don’t have a minute,” Alice says.
I grab the dagger from my thigh strap. Akamu says the only way to save Jared is to reenact his death here in Ravamere. I have to kill Jared, then give him the potion in order for him to live. I close my eyes, my tears dropping on his skin. I hold the dagger, my hand shaking. I glance at Donovan. Maybe the second potion I have will save him too? All of the memories between the two of us bump in my head. My heart beats heavily, the side of my face is warm.
I make the decision. I bring down the knife against Jared, a pulse of white light scatters from his body. I’m forced away from him, the wind picks up around his body. One of the potions rolls onto the floor, Rissa and Alice look to see if I’m okay.
I use all of the strength I have, crawling back to their bodies. I remove the dagger from Jared’s chest. The white light pulls back in and slips into the hole I’ve created, then blasts back out, this time calmer. This is my chance to slip the potion into Jared’s mouth. I reach for the bottle on the floor.
My heart beats one last time, the light pauses. Rissa and Alice turn around and pause. My vision fades and becomes blurry. The wind around me halts.
“You can’t save both. One has to die, the other has to live.” I turn to Lauren, my great grandmother, walking up to me from the side. “Projection is such a rare myth ability, but it can also be deadly and dangerous,” she says. “You’ve messed with nature by going back into the past. You were seen when you ran up to the doors in Vaelle, the night Jared was taken away.”
“No one saw me.”
“Yes, they did. Just because you vanished from sight and projected back to reality doesn’t mean you weren’t seen that night.”
“So just because I was seen the night Jared was taken, it’s forcing me to choose whose life to save? I don’t get it.” My voice shakes.
“How do you know the Verel was going to kill Jared that night? How do you know it wasn’t Donovan instead?” She glances over at him lying on the ground. “Both Jared and Donovan were alive when you met them, that’s true, but how do you know for sure it wasn’t Donovan who was meant to die?”
“In my projection I saw Marcus. He manipulated Donovan to kill Jared.”
“Projections are subjective. You wanted to think that was the reason, so you were shown that. It’s how your ability works.”
“You’re not telling the truth, you’re lying to me!” I shake my head.
“If you had the chance to change things, would you? You and Donovan have been selected naturally, it’s why you feel burned when you touch. Don’t look at this moment as a bad thing. You can change it, you can save both of their lives.” Lauren clamps her fingers together and grins. “Eliza, you projected yourself into the future. You’ve experienced all of this as if it was really real. You’ve become immune to the sense of reality. Think back to the time you were behind your home and projected yourself in the past and watched the fairy and the girl in the alley. Somehow you got stuck in your projections.” Her voice was now flat and serious.
Lauren begins to fade away and the action start to move around slowly. I hear Rissa and Alice calling for me in the background. What did she mean I was stuck in my projections? What’s happening to me? I can’t think about all of this right now. I need to save Donovan and my brother, time is running out. I glare at Lauren.
“All you have to do is wake up,” Lauren’s voice echoes around the room.
She vanishes into white dust. All I have to do is wake up? I turn back around to the two I love and close my eyes. My markings are vibrating out of control and I feel like I’ve been stabbed in the heart.
***
“Eliza?” a faint voice enters my thoughts.
My back is pressed against the soft grass just behind my house. “There you are, sweetie. You’re going to be late for your first day of college.” I roll to my side, seeing my mom smile at me. She walks through the trail back in front of the house.
I face the trees in front of me, wiping my eyes clean. I get up and walk around toward the front. Mom and Miss Canary are laughing about something. She hugs her and walks over to me. Miss Canary’s door opens, a guy steps out, and helps her with her garden. He looks over at me, clears his throat, and focuses on the garden.
“You really have got to stop napping back there. Don’t you remember you’re moving out today?” Mom smiles worriedly at me. “You were yapping all day in my ear about you being excited to leave the nest and everything, yet I find you asleep in the backyard.” She places her arm around my shoulders as we walk up the steps. “I don’t think you want to leave. I’ll be fine when you’re gone, don’t worry about me.” She winks.
The door opens, a guy is standing in the middle of the doorway.
I narrow my eyes at him in confusion. “You guys were just…” My voice trails off, as I thought about what Lauren said to me. Projecting really is a dangerous myth ability.
It’s better off when people don’t know the whole entire story to things.
“Eliza, are you okay?” he says, eyeing me.
Mom glances over. “Of course she’s okay, Jared.” She kisses my forehead, closing our front door, making sure that this time it’s locked tight.

There will always be a little of Eliza and Donovan’s magic in me. This was such a difficult book to write, not in the most obvious ways, but mentally and emotionally. I don’t mean that in a negative way, either. I’ve grown so involved in Eliza’s world, her feelings, and her journey, that it’s become really a part of me. This was my first eve
r series and it’s hard to just let it go like this. I thought about it and thought about it. I came to the conclusion that their story was already finished. I wanted to keep it going because I was afraid of letting them go and this world I’ve spent years building.
Along with the stress I’ve had with this book, I must always thank my beta readers for being there to talk about conflict. They’ve helped me through most of the tough times while writing this book. Thank you Lisa Batemen and Sherri Frye for being there for me and cheerleading me on. My writing always has some sort of grammatical issue, lol, really there needed to be some magic used to help whip this book into shape, and for that, thank you Toni Rakestraw, for being the most fantastic editor any author could ask for.
I’m always thinking of where I started to write in the first place…that’s Wattpad. I’ve met some amazing readers, some who actually have characters based off of them—you guys know who you are! Thank you to all my fans from Wattpad who always seemed to be there whenever I needed them. Without them, this series would have never existed.
I want to thank my family at Limitless for believing in my story, and believing in me. You have always made me feel that complications are only imaginary and being limitless is reality.
