Jewel of Fire Page 24

She stared at the fire as she wished Teela a swift journey home.

“There are harder days ahead of us, my Lynder.”

“Have you heard from Meriel?” Thalynder asked. She reached out to move an errant lock of hair from Bryn’s face.

“They are still on the sea.”

There is another that follows her, Meydra told Bryn.

“I thought none would follow.” Bryn stared up into Meydra’s eyes. She searched her heart and heard the voice. “Mediter!”

  “Mediter?” Thalynder asked.

“Yes. Mediter is above the boats. He follows his heart, and it too is broken.”

Thalynder touched Bryn’s face. “As is ours.”

Bryn kissed Thalynder’s lips. “With Mediter following Meriel, there is hope.”

With every breath there is hope, Meydra replied.

Meriel let the wind carry her, and she glided silently above the boat. She could pull out of the tether easily and escape the Norsemen, but she did not. She watched the sky change color as the evening approached. Soon, the stars would be there to welcome her. Meriel felt something stir deep inside. She looked within her heart, as dragons often do, and she smiled.

  I will not be alone.

No, little one. You will not be alone.
