“Keep down,” Roy shouted, immediately followed by another boom of his Eagle.
My eardrums ached. Deaf artist. Better than dead artist.
I stared hard into the dark hall then cringed at the bright sunlight of a door opening at the end of the hall. The petite form moved through the doorway onto the fire escape. Boom! The door slowly closed as Roy’s footsteps raced toward it.
I didn’t move, savoring the female softness beneath me. “You scared the shit out of me,” I whispered into her hair.
“No faith in me?”
“Plenty of that. I just thought you wouldn’t give me the chance to say . . .”
“That Roy needs us?”
“Not exactly. I’m tired of guns, remember?”
She wiggled and I let her roll so we were face to face, all the important parts lined up. “So, we should let the good cops do their job?”
“Roy and Slominski lined up the good guys?”
Her lips brushed my cheek, her hands burrowing into my hair. “And called in the other departments to go after the fucking bad ones. Cops and down at the courthouse. Benny-the-songbird sang loud and Slominski recorded everything on your end. Just before this last Fr. Dumb Ass move, Priscilla and her mother were picked up. Damnit, Bob, you ran some risks with that crazy bitch.”
“Had to get her to talk. That was the plan, wasn’t it?”
“Fuck the plan,” she murmured against my lips. “Want a beer?”
She moved her hand to her choker. “There. My mic’s turned off. The state patrol has the county attorney’s office surrounded and the few cops on Harpies payroll are slowly turning themselves in. I asked if you wanted a beer or something better?”
It was my turn to squirm and pull out Curly. I flung it down the hall.
Lori’s fingers worked my zipper. My hand slid under her short skirt. She never wears underwear.
“Roy might come back to check on us,” She whispered hotly against my ear.
“I don’t care. I’ll tell him to go find his own woman. I’m making love to mine.”
“Love? Your woman? That’s what you want?”
“All of it, yeah. You ready?”
“I’ve been two years ready.”
