“I think you might have a very particular blood-type sensitivity. I think AB negative is what your body craves. Unfortunately, we don’t have any in supply. It’s rare. We have some O negative, which you should be able to drink just fine, but it’s something I’d like to ween you off of as quickly as possible. It’s also rare.” She laces her fingers together. “Kian is AB negative.”
Madeline hands me a handkerchief when I’ve set down the trash can. I eagerly wipe away the blood and stomach juices around my mouth. I wish I could wipe off the taste on my tongue, too.
I squint when I look at Madeline again.
“You’ve been squinting a lot ever since Helena returned you to us. Are your eyes bothering you?”
“Everything is so bright,” I say. “All of the Colors are bleeding into each other. Floating in the air, too, and out the window.” I know I’m not making sense. No one here knows how I see things, but I’m so sick of this, so tired.
So ready to explode.
“Nova, you’re going to get through this. I’m here to help you. I think it would be wise to keep you with me for the time being. What we’ll be doing is rigorous, but controlling your bloodlust is of the utmost importance. I’m not going to let you lose your humanity. You want to leave Nightshade, and I’m going to help you do it. Safely. So you can live the life you want to live. Don’t give up hope.”
I’ve been trying, but it all seems hopeless at this point.
Mom didn’t answer my call.
I could have killed Kian.
But I stopped. I made myself stop. Maybe I’m not a lost cause. Not yet. I’m not going to become a murderer. And maybe I can still find Mom.
“Let’s do it,” I say. “Anything I have to do, I’ll do it.”
“That’s what I needed to hear. I won’t sugarcoat this. Now that you’ve had Kian’s blood, you’ll go through withdrawals that will likely make you want to die. But you’ll get through, and when you do, you’ll be stronger for it.”
