The Mimic Blade Page 17

by Jesse Wilson

“How are we going to beat this thing, it's invincible,” Elrox said to anyone who might have been listening. “We keep fighting until we find a weakness,” Prolexa replied as she blasted twin beams of light into Bob's back. Bob spread out his arms and sent a wave of invisible force out in all directions to knock everyone away from him as if they were toys.

Tinea flew towards him and formed a blade with her right hand and put it through Bob's chest with all of the power she could summon. Bob's eyes went wide. He grabbed Pen by the throat and threw him back with ease.

“I don't think so, but that was a good shot, just how did you manage it I wonder?” Bob said as his wound was healed along with his black suit in seconds.

Xy, Yalen and Nolber combined their powers to create a black ice beam. It hit Bob in the back and knocked him down. “Teamwork is the weakness, we can beat him,” Nolber said as he watched this. Bob was covered with the black ice only for a second before he simply stood up.

“Of course, we know what the plan has to be, it's obvious,” Elrox said to them. “Yeah I hear you, so let's do it,” Xy said in agreement.

“You don't get to win here, you don't even get to think about victory. I am going to take what makes you work and break it from the inside out, do you understand?” Bob said to all of them and was tired of being generous with this fight. His hands began to burn with red fire of his own.

He spread out his hands and streams of flame shot off in all directions as if they were snakes. They struck everyone and brought them to their knees. “See, isn't this better. All you have to do is kneel before me and you're dead, that's all you have to do. Kids are such a pain to deal with,” Bob said as they fell, the streaming fire stopped but the red flames stuck to their victims, pinning them to the ground, even Arket seemed immobilized by the alien fire that surrounded her.

“Now is as good as time as any,” Elrox said weakly. “Sounds good, Hey Pen, look alive,” Torax said to him and Pen tried to stand up but the alien flames sapped all of his strength that he had. “I'm alive but I don't know for how much longer,” Pen replied to him.

“Good, let's see how good your mimic power really is,” Torax said as he extended his staff and let loose a stream of white energy, all of the gods did the same thing at the same time and the blades, realizing was going on did the same, focused their powers and shot them at Tinea too.

The second they all hit Tinea, she screamed and both Pen and herself blacked out.

Pen woke up holding the mimic blade in his hand, back in the void.

“Did we die?” Pen asked right away.

“No, but the others are relying on us to win, but they shot all of their powers at the same time and I was overloaded. Right now I assume everyone is in a panic, but there is no way I can sort through so much power at one time,” she replied to him. “Well, we have to do something because the abyss won't wait for us to get better, what can I do to help?” Pen asked her as he looked around.

“Nothing, I just need to think, concentrate. This is too much at once,” she replied to him. “No it's not, we can deal with it and we both know it. You just need to find your center,” Pen said to her. “You don't understand, all of these powers are like voices in my mind, all of them screaming, wanting to be used all at once, but I don't know how to do that,” she replied to him.

“Well, can't we combine them into one thing, I mean I know that's a bit cliché but right now we don't have much of a choice,” Pen said to her. “No, I don't have the capacity to do that. I'm not like you. I don't have a soul, I am not really alive and I can only take so much power before I overload,” she replied to him.

“You need a soul, well, use mine,” Pen suggested right away to her. “And how would I do that?” she asked him. “Well you can use Torax's powers, right, he's magic guy so maybe you can whip up a spell that allows for that to work,” Pen suggested again. “No, that'd take too long I have a plan B but you're not going to like it I don't think,” she said to him and Pen raised an eyebrow.

“Lay it on me,” he said reluctantly. “I need to impale you, through the heart here in the dream world. It'll allow me access to your soul just long enough so we can attempt to put this thing back where it belongs,” she said to him and Pen swallowed, considered it. “Do it,” he said to her and took a deep breath.

“Are you sure, it will hurt, it could kill you,” she said to him, worried. “I trust you, and if I die, you'll still be able to work long enough to save everyone,” Pen said and let the blade go, it floated in the air in front of him. “Thanks for being my friend,” Tinea said to him. “Likewise,” Pen replied with a smile.

Tinea put her blade towards his chest and thrust forward, tearing all the way through his body. Pen felt cold as he fell to his knees.

Tinea's mirrored body lay there motionless behind Bob as the others surrounded him, pinned to the ground with overwhelming power.

“This is how it all ends, you laying down at my feet, going to die just like I've always said. Let's face it you've been meddling in my world for far too long and I have plans for this place that you just aren't a part of,” Bob said with a smile.

“We're not done yet you over grown black hole look behind you,” Taro said and smiled. Bob rolled his eyes and decided to take the bait he turned around to see the red fire on Tinea's body going out.

“Well this is weird,” Bob said as she lifted off the ground.

“You tried and kill my friends and my enemies, I am conflicted on how I should feel about that but I do know one thing, you have to go,” she said in a voice that was mixed with Pen's and her own. “The blade and the human have merged, interesting,” Bob said as Tinea exploded with a bright golden light, Bob didn't shield his eyes but the rest of them had to do it.

The light faded away and she stood there with a golden skin with blue fire burning on both of her blades. “I'm going to give you one chance, you need to leave this world,” she said to him in a calm, still mixed voice.

“Or what, with all of your powers combined you'll fight crime and me, but you'll lose against me,” Bob said, gazing into that light without wavering.

Tinea raised both of her arms and shot blue fire at Bob, to his surprise he felt that and blocked it.

“That wasn't possible,” Bob said to himself and Tinea flashed forward to impale him with her left blade, then she pulled the blade out and slid the right blade across his throat with surprising speed. Bob stumbled back and prepared to fight.

“No, you're done. No drawn out fights, no displays of power. No chances,” Tinea said with the merged voice and with a burst of speed was behind Bob. She cut through the air and instead of nothing happening, the air itself sliced open and the wind began to rush through it. “How did you, that's just not possible either, not by the likes of you anyway,” Bob said, taken by surprise.

“I underestimated you that's on me but—“ Tinea wasn't in the mood to listen to anything that Bob had to say and used the blue flames to knock Bob through the hole. She brought her arms together, the entrance sealed up as if it were never there to begin with.

“Goodbye, and don't come back,” she said to him as she watched the portal disappear.

The others began to stand up, impressed and scared with what they just saw happen. “Tinea, are you still in there,” Taro asked her but she didn't respond to him. Her body still burned with blue and golden light.

“We have to go,” she said, but turned and looked at them. “I'll expect all of the blades to be back at Pen's place before the sun rises. You will release you hosts in a safe place,” she looked at them then turned attention to the Gods.

“You, the eight of you will remain here in this world, but you will help it progress and not destroy it like you planned. I have the power to stop all of you now so behave and we won't have a problem,” Tinea said and before any of them could say anything they shot up into the night sky, disappearing. Taro smiled as she left.

“As a final gift, I grant you all the power to
take a human form, things are going to be different from now on and you may need to lie low,” Taro said to the blades, snapped his fingers. Just like that they could feel that it was true.

“You heard the lady, we have stuff to do and places to be,” Lumic said to them and zipped off into the sky. “Hey, could you drop me off at my house first?” Melissa asked her as they flew. “Yeah, not even a problem just point the way,” Lumic replied to her. “You mean you can't just read my mind?” Melissa asked.

“Oh, I guess I never tried. I can try it, should I try?” Lumic asked, still over excited. “No. Just get to Vasaria, I'll show the way from there,” she replied as they flew.

“We have many things to reconsider,” Elrox said, but he looked at Brule. “Listen, I didn't mean what I said earlier, when I made you I was proud of you, and I still am, but for now we'll let you take care of you, if you need to talk just call,” Elrox said to him and Brule crossed his arms.

“You bet, don't worry, I knew you were lying anyway, no hard feelings,” he said to him but his tone didn't change much. “We'll be in touch,” Loa said with a smile and disappeared along with the rest of them.

Sholtan flew into the sky after Lumic, going to Shane's house to drop him off. “I appreciate the ride but could you just follow Melissa, I could serious use a healing spell, I don't think I can stand up on my own, I did just get out of a fight with a god and all,” Shane said as the pain was still ebbing through his body.

“You got it buddy, we'll make a quick stop there, don't worry I remember the way,” Sholtan replied to him. “Thanks, I owe you,” Shane replied and found that he didn't have much energy to talk anymore.

“You can just drop me off in Vasaria, my friends should still be there,” Tommy said, very disappointed that he didn't really get to fight but still honored he was chosen and took part in the final battle at least.

“Hey, you're a great host, if you ever need anything just call my name, we're mentally connected so I'll come help,” Yalen said to him as they flew into the air. “Awesome, sounds great,” Tommy replied to him and was enjoying the ride into the cold night air.

Tinea flew directly to Pen's house and landed in the front yard. She walked inside and to his bedroom. She lay down on the bed and slid off of him to retake the form of Lana Volente.

Pen lay on the bed, pale but he was still breathing. It took Tinea a few seconds to realize that the soul merger didn't kill him after all and was relieved.

She walked back out to the living room and sat down on the couch. It felt weird to do nothing after doing all of that over the last few hours.

The world was saved and no one would know all of the details, but now everything had changed.

Pen wandered around in a vast field filled with strange green flowers he'd never seen before.

“Congratulations on your victory,” Pen's Dad said to him from behind. Pen turned around. “I can bring you home, you know?” Pen said to him. “No, there is so much to see in this world, I'd be too bored if you brought me home but you know that I'll always be able to find you in your dreams if you need to talk to me,” he said and smiled, continued.

“Don't worry about your mom either. Once the gods weren't in the way I was able to go to her dreams and explain the whole thing, she understands and even wants to find a way to come over here, she loves exploring new things,” he said to him and looked off into the distance.

“But I miss you both, you know, it's not going to be the same without you two anymore,” Pen said and looked down.

“I know but you're strong and you have some amazing new friends. How many people can say they are friends with Gods and intelligent super weapons. I think you'll be fine, we'll only be a pillow away if you ever want to talk,” his father said and held out his hand with a smile. Pen reached out and grabbed it. Everything felt good as they shook hands. Everything went black and he woke up.

He slowly sat up and looked around with a groan, wondering if it all really wasn't a dream after all. His body was in pain and he had no idea what time it was it looked like the sun was just beginning to come up.

He slowly stood up and he felt like he was a hundred years old due to how stiff he was. He changed his clothes and walked out into the living room. Lana was sitting there watching the news.

“Good, you are alive, I was beginning to wonder,” she said to him and smiled. “You can't kill a Kenders so easily, or you know. Something like that,” he replied to her and sat down in his favorite chair. It felt like it had been forever since he was here in his favorite place and he felt better already.

“What's on the news?” Pen asked her and Lana turned it up.

“All of the royal families and their blade guardians are safe at Lom Castle. All we know right now is that the Blade crisis is apparently over, all sections of the city are reporting no blade or magical activity of any kind and clean up has begun in several places. However hundreds are dead in Pamid due to unknown wounds, officials are investigating this as we speak but it appears the crisis is largely over. On another note all of the blades have gone missing as well, when further developments happen you'll hear them first on—“ Tinea turned the channel.

“Celebrations are breaking out all over Antacia, stories of a silver knight fighting the blades are the rumor around town and no one knows who or what it is,” the news anchor said and Pen went in a panic.

“Where are the blades?” he began to worry.

“No worries, they are in the garage waiting for you to give them permission to come in. I think we scared them a little bit. Shane and Melissa are fine and will be coming over later,” she said and Pen sighed in relief.

He didn't feel right putting them in the garage so he got back up and walked to the door, opened it and saw seven people in there. “Ladies, gentlemen, come on inside,” Pen said to them and smiled when he saw them.

He didn't understand all the details yet.

“You're going to let us in, sounds like a good deal oh you have a nice place I like it. Show me the Snowcraft game. I want to try it out,” Lumic said and she sped past him. The others weren't so fast but one by one they came into his house.

“We're just visiting. We have a whole world to explore, you know. You didn't expect us to live here did you?” Ventrix said to him and walked past. Pen just smiled despite the chill he gave off.

“Of course not, there isn't enough room for all of you,” Pen said and smiled as he led them all into the living room. He knew nothing would ever be the same again. It'd be the greatest story he'd never be able to tell, but maybe it was better that way.

He just had no real idea what he was going to tell the authorities. He'd save that problem for another day. Right now, all he wanted to do was get to know his new friends a little better. After Sholtan came in, Pen shut the door behind him and prepared to face a new future, all he knew was he wouldn't have to do it alone.

  About the Author

My name is Jesse Wilson. I live in South Dakota and I am 36 years old.

I am also a lifelong Godzilla fan.

A long time ago, I realized that the world inside my head was more appealing than the world I lived in on a day to day basis most of the time and real life was something I was never particularly good at. There was always something missing and I never seemed to find it.

I had dabbled in the art of writing since as long as I can remember. Silly stories that never really amounted to anything, while most people give this up and move on, I just kept moving forward. Never stopping, by the time I was 13 years old I had managed to create my first Godzilla fan fiction stories. None of them were that great, but not too many people a
re at the beginning of anything.

At 15 had started to role play online, free form role playing, they called it. This is where I learned how to show things and not just tell them. This was way before the online games they have today. For fun I used to help other people create their character profiles, I got rather good at it, too. This is where I became addicted to writing.

I wrote my first “novel” when I was 16 years old in High school, it started out as something I just wanted to try, but the thing ended up saving me in English class when I told the teacher and she allowed me to turn the thing for extra credit. I still don’t know how that ended up working, but it did. I managed to turn the thing into a trilogy before I graduated high school.

Unfortunately, the whole thing was lost when a storm rolled through, teaching me the importance of backing everything up.

After graduation I just got a job and committed myself to “real life” everything that wasn’t needed took a back seat, writing included.

In 2006 I rejoined the online world of roleplaying and rediscovered why I liked to do it. From 2006 to 2010 I managed to create one of my favorite characters, Bob the Supervillain.

In the summer of 2010, I began the thing that would unknowingly become an epic. The Delta Squad series, inspired by the people I worked with at the time. It started out as two thousand word drop in the bucket. By the time 2013 came along, the series had evolved into a thirteen-book series! However, it was all a hobby. Something I wanted to see how far I could take it.
