‘Aren’t you forgetting something?’ Angus said.
I stopped dead and turned back around to look at him quizzically. I had my phone in one hand and my purse in the other. I had my wrap draped around my shoulders. I had my shoes on my feet. ‘What?’
He came to me and gently put my glasses back on my face. I can tell you it takes a pretty special person to be able to put another person’s glasses on for them. Even my optometrist doesn’t always get it right.
Now I could see what I had missed before. Angus was looking at me as if I were the most amazing thing that had ever happened to him.
‘Will you come down to Kent with me to visit my sister next week?’ he asked.
‘I’d like that.’ I didn’t want to sound too gushy or enthusiastic but I can tell you I was having a hard time not breaking out in a happy dance.
He gave me a twinkly smile as he brought me closer. ‘Will your flatmate really mind if you stayed out all night?’
I smiled back. I had a feeling he knew I didn’t have a flatmate. ‘As long as it’s only one night.’
‘Only one?’
My heart gave a funny little stumble at the glittering look in his eyes. ‘How many were you thinking of?’ I asked.
He brought his mouth down to mine. ‘I’ll get back to you on that.’
And three months later he did. With an engagement ring that was even nicer than the one Sophie got off my father.
Oh, and by the way, Sophie’s going to be my bridesmaid and I’m going to be hers. I kind of figured it would be a nice family touch. At least this way my dad will never forget my birthday again. Sophie will make sure of it. After all, that’s what best friends are for.
