Embrace: The Secret Billionaire Asher Christmas Duet, Two (The Dark Christmases Book 9) Page 22

“What about you?” I asked. “I mean, do you have connections in Rhode Island?”

Lips pursed, he shook his head.

  “Doing daddy’s business, I presume.”

This time, a cynical sniff accompanied Jamison’s smirk. “No.” He licked his lips, and gosh, it was so sexy. I wanted to kiss them. Get a grip, Bronwyn Henrietta Christmas. Get a goddamn hold of yourself.

  “Visiting a girlfriend?”

He shook his head, and after a two-beat pause said, “No.”

Bingo. I had hit the nail on the head. I grinned, proud of myself for still being able to read him. “So, you have a girlfriend, then?”

His eyebrows furrowed. “Did I say I had a girlfriend? I don’t think I did.”

“Well, you’re not referring to her as a ‘girlfriend.’ But you’ve flown all this way to be with her, so she may believe you’re her boyfriend.”

Jamison tossed his head back and laughed. “I see you’re still creative.”

  “Am I wrong?”

  “You’re wrong.”

  “About which part?”

Our gazes remained locked on each other. I could feel my chest rise and lower with each breath. It was as if the sound of voices chattering, glasses clinking, and ladies and gentlemen calling flight numbers over the loudspeaker had faded to silence.

“Bryn.” His whisper echoed so loudly in my ears. “I’m sorry.”

I was speechless. Then, I heard, “Flight Number 3-3-4-5 to Denver, Colorado, is now boarding.”

“That’s me.” My tight throat made me sound strained.

  “You live in Denver?”

I eased off the stool, and then we were standing close enough that the same energy that created a strong connection between us almost overpowered me.

“No,” I barely said. “I have a client.”

His eyebrows flew up and stayed there. “A client?”

  I nodded gently. “Yes.”

“What are you doing these days?” he asked.

My lips wanted his, and I could feel that his wanted mine, too. But I wished I’d never ran into Jamison Cox. After what he and Boomer had done to undermine my brother’s campaign, Spencer and Jasper would never be able to trust him. And if they couldn’t trust him, then I couldn’t forgive him.

“Good seeing you. You look well,” I said, then I tore my eyes away from Jamison’s face and walked away from him.

  “Bryn?” he called.

I wanted my feet to keep going, but they stopped and turned me around to face him.

We stared at each other. Why did I want to cry? Why did my heart feel shattered by him all over again?

His Adam’s apple bobbed. “Can I call you sometime?”

I pressed my lips into a tight smile. I wanted to say, “what for,” but instead, I turned my back on Jamison Cox and escaped his presence as fast as I could.
