Nobility Page 37

by Mason Dakota

First, a confession. I, Gabriel, am the leader and director of Nebula. Ziavir Yiros works for me and followed my orders in everything he did. I manipulated you and your friends to accomplish our goals. I broke this city by deception, trickery, and murder to bring it to its knees in hopes of building a better tomorrow. Our methods differ, Griffon, but our hearts are the same in wanting a better future. I know you would never accept this as truth or accept who we are. Therefore, I manipulated you into assisting us by giving you someone to hate and hunt. Ziavir.

Second, the story of the death of your parents is not how you remember it to be. When I saw that you couldn’t fully recall what you saw, I manipulated you to get what I needed. The truth is Ziavir didn’t kill your family. He was trying to save you and your mother from your father. Your father is a dangerous man. Ziavir confronted him, and in the fight, your mother and Ziavir’s partner were killed. I know this sounds like a lie. I know it’s hard to trust me. But I give you my word. Your father is alive.

I know I should have told you sooner, but I feared for your safety and what the truth would do to you. For almost two decades Nebula and I protected you and kept you hidden from your father. We served as your guardian angels in the shadows for years. As hard to believe as it may be, I do love you as the son I never had. It is because of that love that I write these final words to you. I’m leaving Chicago to draw your father away. But I will be keeping a close eye. Should you need me, find me. I will be there for you.

  Gabriel

P.S. I heard you got your coat destroyed. I bought you a new one. Be safe and try not to get into too much trouble.

For a while I stood motionless. What else could I do? Angry. Heartbroken. Crushed. Confused. Lost. Thoughts and emotions swirled inside me. I didn’t know what to do. I read the letter again and again. I got half way through my fourth reading before I crumbled it in the palm of my hand. My eyes stung as tears fell from my eyes. I sank to the floor and wrapped my arms around my knees because that was all that I was physically capable of doing. I no longer knew what was true anymore. I had no trust in my own understanding of anything.

Have I always been living a lie? What’s true anymore?

I believed him when he said he betrayed us, however, the details about Ziavir and my father…remained questionable.

Is this another lie from Gabriel? Is what he says true about my father?

I just didn’t know anymore. My sense of reality shattered around me. I didn’t know what was real and what wasn’t. I felt lost in a world I thought I once knew well. My future felt as dark as Chicago.

  So I made some decisions.

I would find Gabriel…and Ziavir…and the rest of Nebula, and I would get answers. I would find truth I could trust once and for all.

I leapt to my feet and headed for the door. There was work to be done.
