Promethean Files 2: The Prometheus Gambit Page 26

by Andrew Dobell

‘It did, yes. Beyond our wildest dreams. As far as we can tell, every nanobot around the world has been de-registered from the Corporations. No one anywhere will need to pay for them anymore,’ Gibson said.

‘I can’t believe the Corporations are taking it that well,’ she said, looking up at the picture of Marissa Webb being interviewed on the vid screen saying how happy she was that they were able to do this.

‘Of course, not. All this,’ Gibson said, waving at the news channel, ‘is all bullshit. Done for the benefit of the public. Susan handled it very well, letting the Corporations save face while also taking responsibility for the virus. Of course, our sources close to or inside the Corporations are reporting a very different scenario in the halls of power. They’re furious, and it’s creating chaos for them internally. For many of their employees, it was the one hold that their employer had over them, but, now that’s gone, we’re starting to see people moving, leaving their jobs, switching to other Corporations or doing something else entirely. This virus will have far reaching implications beyond what we expected.’

  ‘Which is good?’

‘So far. Of course, we’re number one on the Corporations hit list now, but this is a major blow to the superiority of the Corps, so, as far as I’m concerned, it’s all worth it.'

‘How are you holding up, though? You know..’ she said, hoping it was obvious she was talking about his now dead wife.

Gibson hung his head, his initially sunny demeanour falling away like a mask. ‘I’m fine. Or, well, I will be okay, soon,’ he said.

  ‘Any news on Steph?’

‘Errr, no, nothing. I have no idea where she is or what she’s doing… or, well, what the Corporation might be doing to her,’ Gibson said.

Frankie took a breath. ‘I’m sorry,’ she said.

‘It’s fine, I’ll be fine,’ he said. ‘I’m just pleased with how all this went, the end results, I mean. We couldn’t have asked for more.’

‘The Prime Minister is thrilled, she’s already promising us a bigger budget and greater freedom to pursue our goals,’ Xenox said. ‘She’s trying to work with the Corporations now, bring them on board. It’s proving tough, though. The Corps still have an enormous amount of power and influence through the cybernetics they provide on finance and all the information they have on people to blackmail them, not to mention the massive resources they have.’

‘One step at a time, I suppose. Still, this must have levelled the playing field a little?’ she asked.

‘Oh yeah,’ Gibson said. ‘This is huge still.’

‘How about the team? Janus? Brenna?’ Frankie asked.

Janus had already disappeared by the time we returned from the fight. We have no idea where he is. Brenna is still here for the time being, and she’s grudgingly accepted that Xenox didn’t sabotage the virus. I have no idea what her long term plans are. Cole and Kalypso will be staying on as permanent members of the team, as will Dion,’ Gibson said.

‘That’s good to hear,’ she said.

In time, Gibson and Xenox left her to get up and get dressed. Her body looked as good as new, and she was starting to actually grow to like its curious appearance with its build seams that ran over her body.

Later, she walked up to the rooftop and stood, looking out into the city that towered above her. She felt good, happy, and filled with a sense of purpose and accomplishment. For the first time ever she felt like she had actually achieved something in her fight against the Corporations. She felt like she had made a difference. She couldn’t help the smile that played over her face at that realisation. After all this time, after everything she had done, she finally had struck back and hurt the Corporations.

  Author Note

Wow, so here we are at book of The New Prometheus.

Book 1 was a big success for me, and for that I am incredibly grateful. I only hope that you have enjoyed book 2 as much as the first one.

Creating a sequel to a story, especially one that has been a success is no easy feat, but, I have lots of ideas for the series going forward and have a good idea of what will happen in book 3, which I will be pretty much straight onto after the publication of this one.

I’ve had a few people comment on this stories similarities to Ghost in the Shell(GitS), and I will be the first to admit that there are plenty of parallels, mainly because I love GitS and I wanted to create a Cyberpunk story that paid homage to GitS, and the other Cyberpunk works that I love so much, including Blade Runner, the Matrix, Akira, Johnny Mnemonic, Metropolis (Fitz Langs), Robocop, Aeon Flux, Total Recall, Elysium, The Machine, Ex_Machina, etc etc.

It’s as if the image of a cyborg girl with wires attached to her can only ever be used for GitS. Aaah, well, you can’t win them all.

I went bigger with this book; a more global story, but for book 3, it will be a more contained story, I think.
