“Doctor, you will come with us,” one of the mercenaries said.

“I’m sorry, but I would rather die than let my research fall into your hands,” Dr. Morrison replied as he pulled out the grenade. Jackson and the other mercenaries quickly ducked out of the room.

The grenade detonated, and the screen went to static.

“So, that’s what happened, huh?” I asked.

“I’m afraid so,” Lt. General Alan Rodgers said.

“I was in a meeting when the facility was attacked. During the meeting, my assistant informed me of the attack, and my heart jumped into my throat. I spent months trying to find out what happened to the augments. After some time, we found the augments in a facility somewhere in Greenland. I assembled a team of Special Forces to secure the area and to recover the augments. When we arrived, we moved to the area where the augments were being held, and we secured the area. Luckily for us, the guards were not much of a problem for the men. When the area was secured, we let our guard down too soon, thinking the mission was complete. Then, something happened.”

Rodgers paused for a second, and I leaned in closer to him.

  “What happened?” I asked.

“Half of the squad held position at the entrance, and the other squad went in to get the augments. As the men were trying to get the augments out of the cryo tubes, they reported that they lost contact with the men at the front. At first, we thought it might have been interference. Soon, power was cut, and they reported contact. They said that they were being attacked, but they could barely see who was attacking, not only because it was dark, but because whoever was attacking moved extremely fast. We figured out that it was one person. In only a few seconds, he killed twelve of the best soldiers I have ever worked with,” the general said.

“You mean, someone was enhanced with the serum, and he killed all of those men?” I asked.

“That’s exactly what happened. I swear, I did everything I could to save those kids, and I failed,” he replied in a sad voice. He started to tear up a bit.

“Afterwards, I gave up and went into hiding until you showed up. We thought everyone was dead until we picked you up. When we did, we had hoped that as long as you were around, the Union would be destroyed,” he said.

“The Union won’t get away with this. I swear, I will do everything to destroy them,” I replied.

“Do it for them. Do it for all the others who died.”

After I talked with the general for a while, I left the research facility and called for the extraction. I had all the answers I needed. I knew what happened, and I knew what I had to do.

I needed to destroy the Union and avenge the deaths of all those who were killed or experimented on. The Union had to be stopped at all costs. And I wasn’t going to stop until every Union base was destroyed.

  Chapter Thirty-One

When I got back home, my parents and I sat down in the living room, so I could them what I found.

“So, did you find everything okay?” Mom asked.

“Yes. The project was led by a man named Dr. Morrison. He wanted to create super soldiers to save lives. His father died in battle, and he did not want anyone to go through what he did. Jackson had also been one of the scientists who worked on the Omega Project. The facility was attacked with heavily armed soldiers,” I said.

“Jackson revealed the project to the Union?” Dad asked.

“Yes. When he revealed the Omega Project to the Union, he developed the Type-2 serum, and became the head of their bio-weapons division. I fought and killed Jackson a few days ago,” I said.

“So, what do you want to do now?” Mom asked.

“I want to go after the Union, to destroy every one of their bases and take out all of their leaders,” I said.

“Do you think you can handle that?” Dad asked.

“I will try, and I won’t give up,” I said.

We talked more a bit until dinner time. Later that night, I sat in my room planning my next move. Hopefully, the technicians at the STR would find all the locations of all the Union’s bases that were producing Type-1 and Type-2 serum.

Later, I got a call from Sarah.

“Hey, Alex. We were going to a water park this weekend. Did you want to come?” she asked.

“I may not be able to. I have things to do,” I said.

  “More war stuff?” she asked.

“Basically. Is everyone else going?” I asked.

“Yeah. Max told me about your recent mission,” she said.

  “I see.”

“Did you want to talk about it?”

“Maybe some other time. But, over the summer. I want to focus on what I need to do. I need to go after the Union,” I said.

“So, you’re just going to kill people and blow stuff up all summer?”

  “More or less.”

“Well, if that’s what you want to do, I say go for it. I mean, the Union deserves to get their asses handed to them for what they did to you.”

“How do you feel about it?”

“I don’t know. I never had a friend who was a super soldier before. It just feels different. How do you feel about it?” she said.

“Strange and yet normal. I mean, I was trained half of my life for war. So, in some ways, it felt normal to me.”

“Well, if you’re going to fight, be careful,” Sarah said.

“I will. I got to go,” I said before I hung up.

The next day, I returned to the STR headquarters for my next mission.

“Already ready for going back into the fire?” John asked as I entered his office.

“I guess you can say that this is my idea of summer vacation. So, what are my orders?” I asked.

“After digging through Jackson’s files thoroughly, we found all the trade routes and manufacturing facilities where Type-1 and Type-2 serum are being made and sold. Your mission is to wipe these places off the map,” he said.

On the giant screen in front of the room, he showed me all the places and routes on a map of the Earth. Blue dots indicating the trade routes covered almost a quarter of the Earth.

“Well, this could be my way of getting even,” I said.

“Here is all the intel on your next assignment. Look it over and proceed to the mission area,” he said as he handed me an envelope.

I walked out of there ready for what was to come. I was looking forward to doing a great deal of damage to the Union. I knew what I had to do and how long it would take. Starting that day, the Union would fall.

  The war has just begun.
