For whatever reason, I was no longer a stone-cold bitch. In fact, I might even become a nice person in time—although I still wouldn’t take crap off of anyone.
Michael and I discussed what to do now that we could live a normal life. We decided to go back to Tampa so he could continue his training and, in time, I might even continue mine. Once upon a time I had wanted to be a veterinarian—that dream seemed almost possible now—though I knew it would be far in the future.
In the meantime, we would move into his place together. My own house had too many bad and sad memories and besides, once the baby came Mrs. Lebowitz could help babysit.
Yes, the Monsignor had been right—I was pregnant, as I found out after we got back to Tampa and Michael got back to his residency. He was working long hours but he still made time to be with me. We turned one of the spare bedrooms into a nursery and started thinking about baby names. I liked Harry if it was a boy but Michael insisted it would be a girl—a sweet little girl like me. Which of course made me snort sarcastically but secretly I kind of liked the idea.
Sometimes I wonder, will I ever fully get over my time as a slayer? To be honest, I don’t know. I certainly won’t ever be able to forget it. But I can have this baby—Michael’s child—that is growing within me, and love it with all my heart. I never have to be afraid that a slayer’s mark will appear to take him or her from me and I never have to fear fangs in the night thirsty for my blood or the blood of my loved ones. I’ve even gotten back in touch with my father and brothers—the baby is going to need some cousins to play with, after all.
I can’t remember a time since early childhood when I’ve felt so good—so loved and protected and cared for. Finally the world is free of vampires and I am able to live my life without looking over my shoulder. I’m starting a whole new existence now and for the first time since I was little, I look forward to each new day.
