“There, there, my boy.” Morlin pushed Castellan out to arm’s length and stood him up straight. “Are you ready for your recompense?”
Castellan took a shuddering breath and composed himself, feeling serene. “I am.”
The Arc Lector held out his arm, and Castellan fell under his wing. They turned north. “Come. They are waiting for us.”
They marched on, the parish still chanting and holding candles, many fighters and other common townsfolk among them, and they all went to where Castellan would meet his punishment.
Epilogue
Muldor walked with a sort of dullness hanging over his mind, like a drunken pack mule too long on its feet. The outpouring of emotion by Castellan was not the man’s own. It couldn’t be. Muldor knew the ambitious man too well to believe it. The Guild Master was mad for certain, but not vulnerable. Not at all. This wouldn’t end with a whimper.
No, something else was happening here, something perhaps very sinister. Muldor couldn’t understand it, but there was something wrong about the way the Arc Lector acted. No one else seemed to notice, and even Muldor felt so confused and off balance he didn’t blame them.
It was some kind of diabolical spell, radiating out from the Arc Lector. His personal attendants near him had ensnared all of the combatants, Muldor included. They pulled them along to the northern shipping yards, where the men from Janisberg had gained control.
Someone had to pay for The Guild’s transgression, and Muldor supposed it was only right that it be Castellan, but there were many more that had played with major roles. This was all preordained, and the Arc Lector was somehow behind everything. Muldor’s mind was too befuddled to figure it all out, but that was where Muldor was headed.
They marched straight to the open area of the yards, off the water side, and soon many dozens in armor with light blue uniforms came into view.
The Guild man was introduced to Grayme Lautner, the ambassador. The Arc Lector spoke with him over the temporary surrender of the city. The negotiations were brief and though it seemed impossible, dawn spread across the sky, and sunlight filtered overhead.
They had fought all night though to Muldor it felt like it hadn’t been more than an hour or two since Nicoli Peterson died.
After short conference, they pulled Castellan forward. The former master of Sea Haven’s most powerful guild was put into chains and carted off to the enemy’s ships. Grim faced men with shining steel and plumes sticking from their helms escorted him. They looked so clean compared to the bloodied mob, dirty and scabby, Muldor’s people.
The Guild man stood off to the side and watched with an air of detachment. None of it seemed real. It was a dream, a nightmare, or a play acted out before him.
Standing there among the beaten and cowed people of his city, he felt a deep palpable sense of anger and resentment even towards the clean suited parish members. The Arc Lector’s flock, all plied from the city’s many layers of hierarchy, from politician to thug, commoner to dock worker, woman of the night, thief, police, murderer, and merchant alike, bubbled beneath the surface. It waited to boil off the top and spill out.
None of this was finished. It had only begun.
