All four kids are subjected to hearty hugs all around. By the end of it, Tabitha is openly bawling. She mumbles something about allergies or slicing onions for dinner or something, which makes no sense at all since we just got back. Besides, she’s not the only one.
The kids move to one side of the kitchen. Keelan is the last to join the others. He stops next to his mother and pats his baby self on the head. Leaning down, he stage whispers, “Remember, you’re older than your cousins. That means you’re wiser. Never let them forget it.” Alita narrows her eyes in admonishment, but Kegan laughs. Alita’s expression relaxes when Keelan kisses her cheek before joining the others.
Zyla rolls her eyes. “Whatever.” To my great surprise, my daughter kneels and pulls both of my Familiars into her arms. She plants a big kiss on both of their heads. “Keep Mom and Dad safe,” she tells them before letting them go. To Taz, she adds, “I never would have told her where you keep your bacon, by the way.”
“Sure,” Taz grumbles. But I notice his little Tasmanian devil grin as he waddles away.
“Oh, Mom,” Cas calls to Adriel with the twinkle back in his eye, “I don’t mind the name nearly as much as someone may have led you.” He’s rewarded with a relieved smile from his mother. And an elbow in the ribs from Zyla.
I don’t know whose power sends them back to the future. One moment they’re waving goodbye, the next they’re gone. This has alternately been the best and the hardest day of my life.
Chapter 38
We’re all too exhausted to do anything after the kids leave. Dagda and Tana leave for the palace, and everyone else retires for the evening. Standing at the bottom of the stairs, I can’t help feeling a little jealous of Kegan and Alita as they head up to their room with baby Keelan.
Wrapping his arms around me from behind, Kallen rests his chin on my head. His hands cup my lower belly. “Xavion was right. It will be no time at all before they are born.”
I try really hard to take comfort in that. Nodding, I say, “I know.”
Spinning me around, Kallen smiles down at me. “Would it help if I remind you that for a few more months, our nights will be our own? No waking up several times to change diapers or feed two crying babies.”
Snaking my arms around his neck, I return his smile with a sly one of my own. “I wonder how we should pass our nights in the meantime.”
Desire radiates from gorgeous husband. “I have a few ideas.”
Quirking an eyebrow, I remind him, “Those ideas are what led to our future filled with dirty diapers, you know.”
“Totally worth it,” Kallen grins. He captures my lips with his and kisses me deeply.
I don’t want to part from him for even the short amount of time it would take to walk up the stairs. So, I teleport us to our room where we tumble on our bed. Our passion explodes, and with eager hands we pull at each other’s clothes.
So, I’m disappointed when Kallen abruptly hits the pause button. “What about your morning sickness?” he asks. Obviously, he’s remembering the library incident.
My lips curl into a huge smile. “Gone,” I assure him. “Hera is true to her word.”
That’s all he needs to hear. Kallen kisses me again, and I know nothing will tear him away from again the rest of the night. We’re going to focus solely on expressing our love for each other. No thoughts of the future. No worrying about what the Thrones meant when they said my biggest challenges were yet to come. No. Tonight we’re going to enjoy the hear and now and the luxury of privacy that it offers.
Later, as I lay in sated in my husband’s arms in our bed, I gaze out at the stars through the terrace doors. I’m pretty sure one of them winks at me.
