“You mean only when I decide to be rough,” I said.
“Sure, Cole, whatever you say.”
I started to stand and kissed Maya’s cheek.
I kissed Amelia’s soft head and smiled.
I shut my eyes and inhaled her smell.
Amelia grabbed for my cheek and it almost brought me to tears.
I looked at Maya. “We’re going to get married, right?”
“Are you proposing?”
“It’s probably the worst kind, but what if I am?”
“I expected something bigger from you,” she said. “I’m disappointed.”
“I’ll try harder next time,” I said.
I fully stood up and Maya looked up at me. “You know I will marry you, right?”
“I know.”
“And it’ll mostly be for your money.”
“I know,” I said again. “I have to get ready to go.”
“Have a good day, Cole.”
“Love you, Maya.”
“Love you too.”
As I passed the changing table, I saw a onesie laid out.
I shook my head.
“Maya. Can you tell Bev to stop making clothes for our daughter?”
“Why?” Maya asked with a laugh.
I held up the onesie.
Mom’s Boss Didn’t Pull Out.
“I think it’s funny,” Maya said. “And it’s true.”
“Yeah, it’s something,” I said.
I looked at Maya and Amelia one last time before leaving.
I thought about them on the entire ride to the city.
I was meeting Lincoln at his apartment before we were going to meet with some software company. I stayed somewhat busy. Fatherhood came first. Making Maya come was second.
When the car stopped outside Lincoln’s building, I stepped out and smelled the city air.
I went into the building and rode the elevator to the second to last top floor.
The expensive part of the building.
As I walked down the hallway toward Lincoln’s apartment, I saw his door open.
Out stepped a woman in a t-shirt and a dress.
I froze in place.
It was obviously one of Lincoln’s t-shirts because it was big enough to go over the dress.
The dress was a deep, red color.
Her hair looked half styled.
Obviously I was witnessing a walk of shame.
When she looked at me, she stopped and smiled.
I showed my hands. “No judgement. I would run too if I woke up next to Lincoln.”
“I won’t be running too far,” she said.
“Why’s that?” I asked.
She showed me her hands.
Then she pointed to her left hand.
A big, fat diamond ring was on her ring finger.
“Lincoln and I got engaged at his brother’s wedding.”

Lincoln
I regretted not scouting things first.
I knew some of the names of the bridesmaids. And I knew some faces.
But when it came to Levi’s life and my life mixing together, the only thing we had in common was we had the same parents.
Meaning I didn’t know much about Karen’s life - nor did I really give a shit either.
In this case, however, I mentally slapped myself.
The ride to the wedding venue was lonely.
I had a big backseat all to myself.
The more I looked at the other side of the seat empty, the more I realized I messed this whole thing up.
I was the best man.
I had taken on everything from Levi’s side, but I never extended myself across the aisle.
I could have met the bridesmaids. I could have planted those early seeds.
I knew damn well at least one or two of them were secretly jealous that Karen was getting married. And, hey, Levi was a good looking guy. After all, I was his brother. I was better looking (of course) but Levi was still a catch.
Those bridesmaids that were jealous… they were the low hanging fruit.
Now the only thing low hanging were my balls because they were filled with sadness that they weren’t getting any attention.
To make matters worse, there was nothing to drink.
Here I thought Levi was sending a luxury car.
Something packed with drinks.
Knowing Levi, he probably did this to me on purpose. Because he was pissed about what happened at the cupcake place.
Which all worked out.
The cake was awesome.
I paid for the cupcake I ruined.
And I didn’t to hook up with the lady from the cupcake place.
Those were three wins in Levi’s column.
I checked my email over and over. I thought about work too much. At one point I lost my cell signal so I couldn’t even dick around on my phone anymore.
When the signal came back, the car came to a stop.
I took a deep breath.
It was show time.
I was the best man.
And some of these bridesmaids were to be walking funny by the end of this wedding.
I threw open the door and walked to the trunk.
I heard a click sound and I opened it.
“Sir, I can do that for you!” a voice called out.
I grabbed my bags and shut the trunk.
“No need,” I said to the driver.
I opened the front pocket of my one bag and took out a cigarette and lit it.
Smoking had passed me by a long time, to be honest.
There were rare times I would occasionally have a smoke. For fun.
Today was different.
This was to make Levi want to pull his hair out.
I took a deep drag of the cigarette and looked around.
It was like being on to of a mountain. Well, not a mountain. But we were on top of rolling hills. I understood what the phrase meant. The hills around me literally went down and up and down and up.
The place was a giant vineyard.
There were a few buildings right where I was standing but off in the distance I saw the hotel. It was a two story building, built into a large U shape. The exterior was built like a cabin. To give rich people from the city the feel that they were acting rugged and tough.
I threw my tux over my shoulder and started to walk.
As I approached a large, white tent with gigantic clear bulbs hanging along the sides, I spotted Levi.
Standing with Karen, his hand at the small of her back.
She wore an elegant emerald green dress. Probably to represent her love of money and the only reason she was marrying Levi.
Levi was in a suit.
I watched his nose start to twinge before he looked around and saw me.
I smiled with my cigarette between my teeth.
Levi became enraged and ran toward me.
“Are you fucking kidding me right now?” Levi asked.
“What?” I asked. “I’m here on time.”
He grabbed the cigarette from my mouth and dropped it to the ground. “A cigarette? Seriously?”
“I’m taking the edge off,” I said. “The moment is building here, brother. Are you scared? Having second thoughts? I’ve been meaning to tell you… we should have a plan in place. In case you want to bolt. I’ll be y
our getaway driver. Deal?”
“You motherfu-”
“Lincoln, is that you?”
I looked beyond Levi and saw Karen approaching.
I put my bags down and dropped the tux like it was yesterday’s newspaper.
I opened my arms and moved toward her. “Look at you, Karen. You look goddamn beautiful.”
She waved her hands. “Stop. Have you been drinking?”
“Not yet,” I said. “Soon. Just wanted to give you a hug.”
“A hug?” Karen asked.
“A hug?” Levi asked.
“Okay, fine, I won’t hug you,” I said.
“You smell like cigarette smoke,” she said.
“The damn driver was puffing away like a chimney,” I said. “Hey. If you have any second thoughts, let me know. I can be your getaway driver. Or if you want to ride with the real brother, I’m always right here.”
“Thanks for making your presence known,” Karen said.
“He’s going to disappear for a minute now,” Levi said. “Right, Lincoln?”
“I’ll disappear faster than Karen’s libido when she sees you naked, brother,” I said to Levi.
Levi shook his head.
I looked at Karen again. “You look great, Karen. I’m genuinely excited to be here. Now, if you don’t mind… can I have a list of the bridesmaids, please? You can go in alphabetical order, or the size of their tits. And don’t judge me. You can go smallest the largest. All tits needs attention.”
“Christ, Lincoln,” Levi said. “Will you shut your mouth?”
“I couldn’t talk with a cigarette in my mouth,” I said. “You ruined that.”
“Put something else in your mouth then,” Levi said.
“I’m trying,” I said. “I’d prefer a nice sized bridesmaid tit. Left, or right.”
“Levi,” Karen said.
Levi pointed to me. “You’re not funny. You’re lucky you’re here. Just lay low. Please.”
“I’ll blend right in,” I said.
Levi went to Karen and they hurried away like I smelled.
Which I probably did.
I smelled like cigarette smoke and a nice cock for one night.
I looked down at my cigarette on the ground.
Smushed.
It reminded of the bridesmaids hearts when I was done with them all.
I took my stuff to some guy in a fancy suit and white gloves.
He had a cart waiting and verified my name.
He put my stuff on the cart and said everything would be in my room.
Before I could ask where my room was, he handed me a keycard and gave me basic directions around the hotel.
Then he grabbed the cart and wandered off.
I slipped my hands into my pockets and started to walk around the perimeter of the tent.
Inside it was luxury meets douchebag.
Also inside were Mom and Dad.
I wasn’t quite ready for that hello yet.
So I walked to edge of one of the hills.
I saw lines of grapevines and nodded. Those juicy little bastards would end up as overpriced wine someday.
More than that… I thought about work.
Mr. Harrison. Daluney.
Them and their wives at a place like this.
The four of them sitting around, telling stories, laughing, getting to know one another. Daluney was smart. He used his wife to close deals all the time.
Just like Merkelwood.
He snuck right in on that deal like a cockroach in the dark.
He probably got Mr. Harrison a little drunk on wine and then took him for a walk for a cigar or something. Then he threw it all him, made comments about the winery and the wives… of course, that was after he led the charge on flirting with anything that was younger and with a slit.
Mr. Harrison loved that shit too.
He didn’t like that I was single but he loved being able to pickup women younger than him because he was married.
I nodded.
It was all just part of the business. Part of the game.
Behind me I heard laughter, murmuring, and the occasional tink sound of glasses touching.
I looked back and saw Levi shaking hands with some tall, skinny guy.
Levi was ear to ear smile.
Something was said and Levi pointed to Karen, who was off in the distance with a few women that I assumed to be bridesmaids.
I grinned and knew it was time to get to work.
Before heading that way, I detoured closer to the tent and found a waiter holding a drink tray.
“What do you have?” I asked.
“Wine, sir,” the waiter said.
“Listen. I need some whiskey. You can help me, right?”
“We’re serving wine tonight, sir.”
“Yeah, fuck that. Let’s get some whiskey.”
“Sir, I cannot leave until my tray is empty.”
There were four glasses on the tray.
I grabbed all four and threw them behind me.
“There. Done. Let’s go find some whiskey.”
The waiter and I walked down to the hotel.
“There’s a bar inside,” he said to me.
“What do you have back there?” I asked and nodded to an EMPLOYEES ONLY door.
The waiter didn’t answer right away.
“I’ll pay,” I said. “I don’t want to be here. My brother is getting married. I’m the best man. I just want to get drunk and fuck one or three of the bridesmaids. And I need some goddamn whiskey.”
“Wait here,” he said.
The waiter vanished and returned a minute later with a bottle of whiskey.
“If anyone finds out about this, I’ll get fired,” he said.
“No you won’t. I went into the back myself and grabbed this. End of discussion.”
I walked away from the waited and enjoyed a drink.
“I know it’s a fucking winery, but there’s nothing else to drink?”
I heard the voice and then saw the person.
In a black dress, carrying her shoes over her shoulder.
“Yeah, well fuck you too, dude!”
I stopped dead in my tracks.
She turned her head and looked at me.
Should length blonde hair, dark eyes, and sexy snarl on her face.
“What are you looking at?” she asked me.
“Someone who needs a drink,” I said.
I showed her the bottle of whiskey.
“I’m not sleeping with you if we share that,” she said.
“Then keep walking.”
“Funny.”
“I’m not joking. Not when it comes to whiskey and sex.”
“Great,” she said. “I need to just coast through this wedding, okay?”
“You’re here for the wedding?”
“I’m in the wedding.”
“Me too,” I said.
“Great,” she said again.
I stepped toward her. “Not a fan of wine?”
I held the bottle of whiskey out.
She took it and drank it like water.
That got my attention.
Her lips smacked together and she sighed.
“No,” she said. “I got wine drunk two nights ago. My stomach turns at the thought of wine.”
“You timed that poorly, huh?”
“I guess so. Thanks for the drink.”
“Where are you running off to?” I asked.
“The dinner party,” she said. “I have to say something. Karen’s my cousin… or at least that’s what I tell everyone. We’re close like cousins, if that makes sense.”
“Levi’s my brother.”
“You’re the best man?” she asked with a grin.
“That smile tells me you heard a few things about me,” I said.
“Something like that,” she said. “See you around, Levi. Thanks for the drink.”
She started to jog away.
A short, beautiful woman with a mouth like a sa
ilor and a the ability to throw back whiskey like a biker.
I let out a loud whistle.
She stopped and looked back.
“What’s your name?” I called out.
“Grace,” she said.
She started to jog again.
“Grace,” I whispered.
I laughed to myself.
If women like Grace were part of this wedding, maybe things weren’t going to be so boring…
