Alex
“You’re one lucky guy, Mr. Sobol.” I’m in a meeting room at the prison with my attorney, Jack Wood. He’s a grey haired guy old enough to be my grandfather, but I consider him a friend. The Kocan case is over, and the organization has been dismantled. Wood came to see me to give me some news I didn’t expect.
“You’re telling me the truth? I’m gonna get out of here?”
“Yeah, in exchange for the information you provided, they’re letting you off with time served.”
“I can’t believe it.” I don’t cry much, but I feel like doing it now. “That’s good news.”
“And I have some other good news.”
“What’s that?”
“Heather is here.”
Working with Wood over the year, he’s gotten an earful about my love for Heather. I got to see her in court, still as beautiful as I remembered, but we couldn’t talk to each other, and I couldn’t touch her. “She’s here?”
Jack nods. “If you want to see her, she wants to see you.”
“Hell, yeah I want to see her!”
“Good. Wait here, and we’ll get her in here.”
“Alex!” Heather rushes up to me with the guard looking on.
I give her a quick kiss, wishing I could kiss her longer, and then I hug her tiny body. Her soft red hair touches my face. “Baby, it’s been too long.”
We pull away, and she looks at me with those green eyes. “They’re letting you out! I just heard.”
“Yeah, can you believe it?” We sit at a table as close to each other as possible.
“I’ve missed you so much,” says Heather. “It’s been hell without you.”
“Baby, I’ve missed you too. But you gotta know something. The Kocans can still get to me even behind bars. I’m not safe in Chicago. So I’m getting out of the country, and I want you to come with me.”
“You mean, to Germany?”
“That’s exactly what I mean. Not forever, but just for now.”
Heather nods her head enthusiastically. “Yes, I want to go with you.”
“You do?”
“I do.”
“That’s perfect.” I smile harder than I have in awhile. “Do you have a passport?”
“Yes, I’ve always had one.”
“Then, we’re ready. We can move on to the next chapter of our lives, together.”
Tears come to Heather’s green eyes, but this time there’s no sadness there. “I’ve been miserable without you. I love you, Alex.”
I grab Heather’s hands. “I love you too.”
