Rescued on Bear Mountain Page 12

by Sloane Meyers

“I can’t believe I’m going to be an Uncle,” Scott exclaimed.

“Well, believe it, because you are,” Joel said with a grin. “Now come have a celebratory beer with me.”

Joel and Scott went into the kitchen and grabbed beers, then came back out to the porch with Anna. Anna held up the glass of iced tea she’d been sipping, and smiled at both of them.

“Cheers,” she said. “To a finished cabin and a new little cub to love.”

“Cheers,” Joel and Scott both said in unison as they clinked their beer bottles with Anna’s glass.

Joel stepped over and kissed Anna firmly on the lips, then slid his hand protectively onto her belly. “I’m the luckiest man alive,” he murmured.

“You are lucky,” Scott chimed in. “What I wouldn’t give to have a lifemate and a cub or two.”

Anna smiled at him. “She’s out there somewhere. Be patient. Things can happen faster than you think. They certainly did for Joel and me.”

Scott grunted. “I hope you’re right. I’m getting tired of being patient.”

Joel smiled. “Anna’s always right. I learned that lesson pretty quickly.”

“I’m not always right,” Anna said. “I’m not very good at predicting blizzards.”

Joel threw back his head and laughed. “True enough. But that’s your only flaw. You’re right about everything else.”

“I am,” Anna said confidently. “And one thing I’m sure that I’m right about: I’m living out my happily ever after. I couldn’t ask for more than that.”

“Neither could I,” Joel said, leaning in to kiss her.

  “Get a room!” Scott protested.

Joel and Anna just laughed. The three of them sat on the porch drinking beer and tea, laughing and talking until well after the sun had set. Anna’s heart had never felt so full, and she vowed that she would never take a single moment with Joel for granted.

Being rescued on Bear Mountain had turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to her, at least for the time being. She had a feeling that the birth of her cub might top even that, but she had a few more months before she would know for sure.

In the meantime, she would keep soaking in all the goodness of life on the mountain, and life with her bear.
