#15 FIND THE RIGHT GUY
Samantha looked around and in the middle of the dance floor, directly in front of her, was D. Standing alone, in a serious suit that made him look especially gorgeous.
You look gorgeous, she thought.
He smiled at her and she walked toward him.
“You look gorgeous,” he said.
“I was just thinking the same thing about you.”
“It’s mutual admiration, then,” D said. “Uh, where’s your date?”
“Dancing with Marley.”
“Well, I’m not here with anyone. If you’re desperate, I’d be happy to dance with you.”
“Desperate?”
“For a partner, I mean,” D said, smiling.
“You’re not scared of dancing, is that it?”
“Scared, no.”
“No?”
“Terrified maybe; scared is a little weak.”
“Well, maybe then we should sit down…”
D pulled her back by the hand and leaned over her, whispering in her ear, “I want to dance with you. Slow dance, even. Just so I can be near you.”
She smiled, his breath brushing against her ear, and a shiver went up her spine and raised the gooseflesh on her arms.
“Let’s find a place to sit, until the music begins?” D asked.
“Yes, definitely,” she said, following him to the table where Riley and Eric were sitting and cuddling up to each other.
“You know…my dad wants to meet you,” D said.
“Funny, my dad wants to meet you too.”
“Ugh, let’s do your dad first.”
“My dad is a teddy bear!”
“No man is a teddy bear when it comes to the boy in love with his little girl.”
Sam watched him and then broke into a huge smile. She didn’t say a word, but stood up, standing between his legs as he sat in his chair, and bent over him, him having to tilt his head back to look at her. She kissed him. Lightly at first and then again and again and again—well, at least until one of the teacher chaperones came by and tapped her on the shoulder, shaking her head.
“Mrs. Donnegan! She was taking advantage of me, thank you for being so vigilant!” D called after the teacher.
The teacher coughed, while Sam hit him on the shoulder. “I would never believe such a thing, Mr. Hammond,” Mrs. Donnegan responded.
Sam laughed, and then the music started.
“Dance with me?” she asked.
“Of course,” he said, letting her pull him onto the dance floor.
He wrapped his arms around her, and they rocked back and forth together, her head against his shoulder and his arms around her.
“Your hair smells pretty,” he said.
“Thanks,” she replied.
“What are you thinking about?” he asked.
“Kissing you again.”
“Good.”
“Good?”
“Yes, good.”
“What are you thinking about?”
“Italian soccer,” he said, earning himself a whack on the arm. He laughed at her distress.
“I’m thinking that I want to know if you’ll go with me to prom.”
Sam tilted her head, and looked at him. “That is months away.”
“Well, I can’t take the risk that another guy will ask you first,” D said, motioning his head toward Justin, who was watching them and smirking.
Sam looked from Justin to D, who was watching her intently. “So,” he said, “Um…will you?”
He looked so charmingly ill at ease that Sam had to smile and put him out of his misery. “Of course,” she said, and then she wrapped her hands around his neck, and pulled him down into a kiss.
Author Note
Dear reader,
A quick confession—I don’t know Latin and I can’t write haiku. So I’d like to (publicly) thank Google (for researching Latin phrases) and Sam (for helping me with Walker’s trombone haiku).
