“Call me when you get to town,” he said. “We’ll have dinner. I’ll want to know where to send the wedding present.”
They said they would. They shook hands and would have gone to the door with him but he pushed them back and said he’d find his way out. He left them there, holding hands again, and went along the hall. It was empty now, and quiet, and there was no one to see him as he went across the porch and down the driveway toward the gatehouse and his waiting car.
Only one thing bothered him now. He could not help wondering about Eddie Kelsey’s convertible. He wondered if the car had been delivered yet. He made up his mind to take the matter up with young George Caldwell if there had been any delay. For Eddie had been promised a convertible, and Eddie was going to get it.
