  “Jenny!” all three of them intoned.

  The truth was that having finally wormed a commitment out of me, Geof’s need had relaxed. “One of these days,” we kept promising each other, but somehow something always got in the way.

  “Well,” Barbara said, “you can have your reception here, if you like. I have just the right appetizers. They’re really delicious: lobster hors d’oeuvres. We serve them on a . . .”

  She noticed we were staring at her.

  “Oh,” said the former mayor of Port Frederick. “Well, maybe not lobsters.”
