Betrayed: Episode Three of the Sister Planets Series Page 7

by Leviticus James

She’s looking right at me. As soon as we make eye contact, she sighs. I can’t tell if it’s a sigh of relief or one of dread.

“Don’t worry,” she says in a low voice. “You’re safe. As far as the rest of the world is concerned, you’re dead. Like me.” One corner of her mouth goes up in a tired smile. “Welcome to the club.”

  Acknowledgments

As always, there are several people who need thanked for making this book happen.

First shout out goes to my readers. Without you, this whole thing is pointless. Thank you for committing to this series. I hope the ride has been a good one so far.

Victoria and Roman, you both are all-stars. Enough said.

To Laura of Designs by Laura, thank you for your willingness to move deadlines and work around the chaos brought on by a pandemic. Despite all of the distractions, you created a killer cover. Thank you thank you thank you.

To my writing group, you all provided a lot of motivation for me during quarantine. Seeing you all once(ish) a week helped keep me stay focused on my writing. There were several days where I felt like a total failure as a writer, but I walked away from our video chats edified and reenergized.

The Wife, I could go on and on about how wonderful you are, but I can feel your eyes rolling. So I’ll say this: We truly are Team Awesome, and I’m so happy we’re doing this thing called life together.

Mav needs to kill her boss.

But that will be tricky. He’s a senator. Not only that, he’s one election away from becoming the Vice President of USEM—the United States of Earth and Mars. And the kill switches he had implanted in Mav’s skull keep her quiet and obedient.

But when Mav unexpectedly inherits a political insider’s fortune, it doesn’t take long for her fame to attract the attention of a shadowy organization that wants the same thing she does—a dead senator.

Numbered is the first episode in the collection of novellas that make up the Sister Planets series.

Maverick Martinique’s life has become far more complicated now that she has joined the cause to assassinate Senator Michael Greenstreet.

She’s immediately tasked with keeping the details of her complicated cover story straight, navigating the murky waters of a dangerous social circle, and looking for a mysterious room within the senator’s mansion that will open up communication with Mars.

Apparently, the killing part comes later.

All her hard work depends on Greenstreet buying the ruse, but he doesn’t seem interested. His hostility toward Mav isn’t veiled at all, and he makes something perfectly clear in their first encounter—one misstep and Mav is as good as dead.

Cornered is the second episode in the collection of novellas that make up the Sister Planets series.
