Having My Baby Page 16

by Imari Jade

He turned off the TV and sat for a moment looking at a blank screen. I could feel the tears building up behind my eyes. “What about the others, Polly, the ones that are happy? Or is it the whole idea of committing yourself to one person, me perhaps?” His face had turned pale, that one only associated with fear. I had never seen him look like this. It was as if a stranger was sitting in front of me.

“No,” I gasped. “I love you so much. I couldn’t bear life without you. I’d be so lost.”

For a moment he gazed into my eyes. I knew Steve could always tell what I was feeling by my eyes. I prayed he knew what I was feeling now. He drew his head closer to mine, cupped my cheeks in his hands, his lips slowly brushed mine.

“I love you, Polly, and I you know you love me. Why don’t you just admit that standing in a church full of our family and friends, only scares you because you can’t control the outcome. You can’t write the ending. It scares me too, but I love you enough, and so damned sure that both of us would never let it fail, and you know why?” I shook my head; the tears I couldn’t hold back, flowed down my cheeks. “Because you are strong enough for the both of us to make it work. Show me how much you really love me, Polly.” A tear slowly trickled down his cheek and he pulled me onto his knee. His lips covered mine; it was a long kiss, a desperate kiss, tasting of both our tears and passion for each other. Steve wrapped his arms around me, I could feel the strength of his body harden, and with no effort at all, he rose from the chair and carried me to the bedroom.

Steve ran his fingers through my long blonde hair, entwined it around his hand and leaning down he inhaled deeply. “I love the way your hair smells of Channel and coconut.” Kissing my eyes, he said, “The first time I saw you I was blown away by how your piercing blue eyes are like two deep pools. I just wanted to dive into them. And this nose, that twitches when you concentrate.” He kissed its tip. Then with great tenderness, Steve began to undress me, kissing down my neck as he lifted my jumper over my head. “I love your long slender neck, and these breasts that you think are too small, I think are perfect.” Cupping them in his hands, he placed a small kiss on each.

Throwing back my head, I gasped for air, every nerve ending stimulated by each caress, each kiss driving me into a state of euphoria. I ran my hands through his hair. “Take me, take me now,” I groaned.

Taking my hand, he led me to the bed. Slipping under the crisp cool sheets I became aware of how hot my body felt, like a fire roaring under my skin. As Steve slid in beside me, our bodies entwined, Steve looked down at me. “Polly, will you marry me?”

My eyes widened. I licked my lips, tasting Steve. My heart thumped with excitement and fear. I slid my hands down the side of his face, pulling his quivering lips toward mine. I could feel his warm breath, waiting in anticipation for my answer. “Yes,” I said. His mouth came onto mine with passionate hunger, and then our bodies became one.

As dawn was breaking, we lay on our sides just looking at each othe.; I twisted the can-pull ring around my finger, the third one on my left hand. “This had better be a temporary ring, you cheapskate, and just one other thing,” I whispered. “I don’t want a church. How about when we are in the States next month, it’s just you and me in Las Vegas?”

Steve laughed. “I wouldn’t have expected anything else from you. So you know what my next question is?”

I smiled. “I do. Baby steps, Steve, baby steps.”
