Troll: Taken by the Beast Page 4

Kara spent the next few days in the small room barred in and with only the pile of rags and furs to keep her warm. The troll would bring her food once or twice a day and a bucket of warm water for washing every other day, he would ravage her at a whim using her as he pleased taking her when he wanted. She had fully succumbed to him, giving him her body whenever he wanted, even wanting him to take her. She was not sure what was wrong with her, she did not want to feel like this but something inside of her craved intense feelings he brought out of her. As the days passed hope of being rescued drained from her, she began to feel this is all she would know until the day she died.

On the seventh day sounds of shouting pulled Kara out of the darkness of sleep and her eyes fluttered open. She was confused at first and then it all came back to her, she was so ashamed at how she let the beast, no… not let, wanted the beast to take her. She pushed the shame down and wanted to know what the sounds were, she was naked but covered in warm furs and as she looked around the she noticed the door was ajar. She could hear the shouting intensifying and she wanted to know what was happening. Who was shouting? Maybe someone had come to rescue her? She stood up, wrapped her feet in layers of rags, and wrapped the largest fur she could find around her to protect her from the cold.

She walked out of the door and down the stone brick hall. The voices became louder and she began to recognize them, it was the voices of her parents, the town priest and someone else, someone with a much deeper gravelly voice. She felt the hall get colder and could see daylight brightening the hall ahead. She followed the hall past a door that led into the room she first woke up in the very first day she was here, and now she could see a large wooden door at the very end of the hall. She rushed to the door and opened it as quietly as possible so as to not draw attention to herself. She peeked out of the door and could see her parents and the priest surrounding the troll and yelling at it.

“I am going to give you one more chance beast,” her father yelled as his eyes narrowed and he unhitched his double handed battle axe and brought around to bear on the creature. “Bring me my daughter…NOW!”

She watched as her mother backed away from the creature several paces and knocked an arrow in her longbow, the priest held his hand high and a silver war hammer appeared in it.

The troll bared his fangs and narrowed his eyes shooting deadly stares at those surrounding him as he spoke in a deep hollow gravelly voice. “By our pact, she is mine. Leave or I will kill you all, like I killed all the Orcs that lived here.”

“You were given a virgin that was chosen by tradition,” the priest called out. “You brought her back and stole another. The pact was that we choose the girl to be given to you. WE CHOOSE, NOT YOU!”

“I will keep her, and I will send you all to Hel,” the troll hissed through gritted fangs.

“You may send me to Hel beast,” her father said as he took a step forward and brought his axe into attack position. “But I will drag you kicking and screaming with me.”

Kara watched shocked by the ferocity of the melee that played out before her. Her mother loosed three arrows with blinding speed and accuracy hitting the troll behind the knee and blowing out the front crippling his left leg, and two arrows square between the shoulders piercing flesh and sinking deep into its lungs. Her father rushed in screaming a war cry and swinging his axe in a great overhead arc cleaving the trolls left arm just below the elbow and the priest began chanting a prayer. The troll buckled on his left side screaming in pain as its knee blew out and arm was severed, it hacked and gouts of ichor sprayed out from around the arrows in its back but still it countered with a massive swipe of its clawed hand across her father’s face and chest. Her father was set back several paces his face and chest bleeding uncontrollably and he cried out, running in to attack again.

More arrows flew into the troll’s back and the Priest continued chanting. Kara watched in shock as the beast moved with blinding speed spinning and rushing her mother. Her mother tried to back away but the beast had too much speed and too great a stride. The troll knocked her to the ground with all of his weight and began clawing and biting viciously at her, sprays of blood coming out with each of its attacks staining the snow all about her. Her father was on the beast bringing his axe down with all his might burying it deep in the beasts head causing it to crumple instantly.

“Drag it away from her,” the priest cried as the hammer in his hand grew to massive proportions. His body bulked up to almost double its normal mass and raw energy crackled and arced off of him. “Thor’s will is in me, I will smite this beast.”

Her father dragged the creature away for her mother’s motionless form and backed away from it as the priest brought his hammer down with great thunderous strikes into the troll’s immobile form. The priest hit it over and over again and ichor sprayed in all directions with every hit.

Kara ran from the safety of the building trying to get to her mother’s side and was startled as the priest cried out, his voice like thunder itself.

“By Thor’s will,” the priest screamed and pointed his hammer at the troll. “DIE BEAST!”

Kara was momentarily blinded as a massive bolt of lightning arced from the priests hammer into the troll’s form causing it to explode, and only a moment after a massive clap of thunder rocked the ground causing her to stumble and fall to her knees in the snow. She did not stop she kept moving in her mother’s direction fumbling and staggering through the deep snow.

Kara reached her mother just as the priest and her father did, she stared in shock at the grisly sight before her.

“Save her Gooar,” her father pleaded.

The priest laid his hands on her mother and began chanting as he grasped his holy symbol so tight that blood began trickling out of his clinched hand. Kara just watched tears flowing freely from her and she began shaking. The priest ended his chant and a white glowing energy flowed from his hands into Kara’s mother, her wounds began closing and her bleeding stopped, she gasped as her eyes shocked open. Kara threw her arms around her mother and her mother began crying at the sight of her daughter.

Kara took several minutes to regain her composure and was frantically trying keep from breaking down totally. The priest healed her father’s wounds and made sure her mother was well enough to travel. She was embraced by both her mother and father and felt safe for the first time in days.

“Brandr,” the priest called with a serious tone. “Come here.”

Kara watched her father look toward the priest and then his face took on a worried look. Her father kissed her forehead and left them walking to the priest. She could now see what bothered the two men as her eyes looked to where the troll was struck down. It was not there, all that was left was a large patch of ichor stained snow and a trail leading off toward the cliffs at the edge of the Orc town. Kara watched as they readied their weapons and began following the trail leading to the edge of town. Kara did not have a weapon but stayed close to her mother’s side she would fight bare handed if she needed to, she would not allow the beast to harm her mother like it did before. They followed the trail seeing it gradually turned from trail to footsteps and soon they came upon the beast. It was standing on the edge of a cliff its grievous wounds still healing at an alarming rate. The troll twisted to look at them, its left eye swung by a thin cord out of the socket and it grinned as it leapt from the cliff.

“We must track the beast,” Brandr said as he looked over the edge of the cliff into the ravine and he could see the troll smashed on the ground two to three hundred feet below. “We have to end this.”

“No my friend,” the priest said earnestly. “I have used all of my power getting us here and battling the beast. By the time we get to the bottom of the ravine it will have fully healed.”

Kara watched her father fight with his inner feelings and concede to the fact that the beast had escaped. They made their way back to the dwelling where Kara was being held, it was an Orc town alright but all of the O
rcs were killed or driven away many years ago and the troll took to living here. Kara’s mother pulled some clothing out of her travel pack and gave them to Kara to dress properly for their long journey home. Kara stepped back in the dwelling and started to dress in the lairs of clothing her mother had given her, as she was walking back to her parents something had caught her eye. She turned to look at what it was and she could see a thin pillar of smoke rising out of one of the chimneys of the other dwellings.

“Smoke,” Kara called out and pointed to the chimney.

She watched as one by one the others looked toward where she was pointing. They met up and headed toward the building, they were not sure what to expect, to their knowledge there was ever only one troll in this area, maybe it was keeping some Orcs as slaves to serve it. They came around the corner of the building from where the smoke was coming and were set back slightly and the sight of piles of Orc skulls. There were dozens and dozens of Orc skulls and assorted bones. They carefully made their way to the door of the building and found it barred shut from this side with wooden planks.

Kara watched as her father readied his giant axe and motioned for the priest to unbar the door. Her mother handed her a dagger and then readied her bow and knocked an arrow. Kara readied her dagger and watched as her father burst through the door into the dwelling, the priest falling in behind him and Kara close on the priest’s heels. The sight inside stopped them all dead in their tracks, there were over a dozen human women. They were all of the women offered to the beast over the years, none of them expected this they had thought the troll killed all of his offerings. They did not know the women would be subjected to years of living with the beast. They explained what happened to the captives and the women rejoiced and began getting ready for the long journey back to the town. The troll broke their pact by kidnapping Kara and since the Orc threat no longer exists, they will have no need for another pact.

The road home was a long cold one taking almost three full days, Kara did not say much to anyone, and her shame over her actions consumed her. She caught the priest staring at her more than once on the journey back, his eyes sympathetic to her, like he knew what happened to her, he could see the shame in her eyes and her body language. She had conceded to the fact that she had to tell her parents what happened, that she was no longer a virgin and that she would not be fit to be married.

As they entered town she felt a lot of apprehension building within her. What if the creature came back for her? It was not dead and she had the feeling it could kill without feeling or remorse.

“Kara,” the priest called to her as they were about to pass the temple. “Join me for a moment inside.”

“I’ll meet you at home,” she said to her parents and followed him to the temple door.

The priest closed the temple door behind them and she watched him take a few steps his toward the front of the temple.

“I want you to be honest with me,” he said in a low voice turning his head slightly to look at her. “Can you be fully honest with me Kara?”

“Yes Gooar,” she answered hanging her head as she knew what he was going to ask.

“Did it have its way with you?” the priest asked.

“Yes Gooar,” she said with emotion thick in her voice. “It took me many times, and every day that I was there.”

She felt tears forming in her eyes as the priest walked to her and put one hand on his holy symbol and then the other on her stomach as he began chanting. Kara felt a warmth move from his hand into her body while he chanted and when his chanting ended he looked at her with concern.

“You’re with child,” he said to her with a concerned tone. “This was not to ever happen.”

She struggled to accept the information and asked. “What about all the others that were given to it? This can’t be the first time a child would come from his loins.”

“They were all barren,” he said with certainty.

“They were picked at random,” Kara said not understanding how it could be possible. “How could they all be barren?”

“I made them that way child,” the priest said with anger entering his voice. “The ritual I performed after you girls prepared Edda, the ritual made her barren. The ritual is always performed on the girls we offered to keep the beast from breeding.”

Kara sank to her knees on the stone floor as a million things ran through her head. She stood up and walked out of the temple in a daze. She could hear the priest calling out to her and she did not acknowledge his words she just kept walking toward her home.

Several minutes later she could see up ahead her parents walking toward her and she smiled at the sight of them. Her mind started to whirl as she saw her parents drawing their weapons and calling something out and pointing behind her. Kara turned just in time to see a huge lumbering form running up behind her, the form of the troll. She stared paralyzed into its deadly black eyes and everything started moving in slow motion as it leaped toward her. She felt something whoosh by her head and an arrow thudded into the troll’s face, just as its claws were about to sink into her chest the creature was pulled away and slammed into the ground to the right of her.

She brought her focus past the creature to see the priest holding its leg his burly form crackling with raw energy and gouts of lightning arcing from eye to eye. She felt wind wash over her on both sides as her parents charged by her and her mother stopped just in front of her and started firing arrows at the creature. The priest and her father hammered and chopped the beast relentlessly and her mother turned to her.

“Kara, gather wood,” her mother ordered. “If lightning does not kill the beast, then we will see if fire does.”

Kara snapped out of her daze and started running to gather wood. She took it from the closest home’s woodshed and came back as quickly as her legs would carry her through the snow. By the time she returned other town people had started to emerge from their homes and were gathering wood to burn the beast. Kara approached where her father and the priest were still hitting the creature, she could see that it was healing fast ad she threw the wood down on it. She felt someone push past her and it was the shop keep Oleg, he had a lit torch in one hand and a cask under one arm. She watched him pop the cork out of the cask and start dumping lamp oil on the creature, when the cask was empty he touched the torch to the oil and it went up in a burst of flame.

Her father and the priest stopped their attacks and backed away shielding their faces from the flame and other people began bringing and adding wood to the fire. Kara watched it burn for most of the night and by morning she was still watching the last embers of the fire die down. The beast had burned to its bones and was showing no signs of healing or coming back. She was cold and shaking and startled when she felt someone touch her, she turned her head and saw Adisa looking back deeply into her eyes.

“You look like you could use a friend,” Adisa said and a gentle look of concern came over her softening her features.

“I could use a friend, I have had a long trek home and an even longer harder week,” Kara responded being coy. “I was just thinking about having a bath.”

Kara walked with Adisa toward the hot springs cave and the two girls laughed and talked but inside she knew that her life had taken a new direction. She would soon be a mother but what would she be a mother to? What else would she have to endure?
