The choice is yours. What do you choose?
I didn’t have a whole lot of time. The ripples of agony in my gut told me that much. But my choice was already made. I want it. Yes, I want a second chance, I replied.
My invisible guest didn’t respond, but soon after, a slicing pain gouged deep in my stomach.
This time I did scream.
There is only one way to repair your core, Rin. I am sorry that it is so uncomfortable.
My head lolled against the wooden planks of the wall. Sweat poured from my body.
It is really rather ironic. Your new body belonged to a Runesmith. A Runesmith creates spells by inscribing parchment of crystals with runes. I am going to heal you by inscribing your core with a rune. And I know just the right one to use!
The spirit continued, her voice chipper and excited. The rune of Hunger will cause your core to have a far greater pull than other cores, drawing in Spirit at an accelerated rate. This will have a few effects, the most important of which is to prevent your core from bleeding out.
In my mind’s eye, I saw it. The rune looked like five fangs, side by side, pointing downward. I knew its function and when it was useful to use.
I sensed the spirit come closer, and I felt something touch both of my feverish temples at once. So that you can make repairs yourself in the future, I grant you Runic Vision. If you’re clever enough, you can figure out how to use this ability in more ways than one.
Then light exploded in my vision, causing me to flinch and cry out. My eyes were fine, though. All around me I saw shimmering symbols covering many of the objects in the room.
Not only would I see runes but also the empty rune slots that marked mundane items like the planks of wood in the ceiling above me.
Glancing down, I saw the blazing inferno of my core for the first time. It was a wheel of circulating light, pure energy the people in this world called Spirit.
Running down the center of my core were freshly etched rune slots, the five-sided edges around each sparking faintly as if the spirit had just created them. I suppose she did, I mused, observing the rune of Hunger form on the first available slot.
The rune flared to life, the fang-like symbol almost coming alive for a moment. I clenched my teeth, anticipating another bout of mind-melting pain.
Instead, my body flushed with power, flooding with Spirit like someone emerging from the depths of the ocean and drawing in a huge breath…
