The Ice Chasm (Harvey Bennet Thrillers Book 3) Page 32

by Nick Thacker

  “Like, a few minutes?”

‘A few months. Take some time to rest, Gareth. You as well, Joshua. If you accept, there will be training programs designed individually for each of you. And Julie and Ben, I suppose you two will get little rest. I hear a congratulations is in order.’

Reggie and Joshua laughed, and Mrs. E smiled. Ben’s face flushed a bit, but Julie reached over and placed her hand on his arm.

Reggie watched, his huge smile returning, and waited for Ben to look over at him. “Ben, if Joshua ends up being your best man over me, I’ll make sure your face stays like that forever.”

  Do me a favor...

If you liked this book (or even if you hated it…) write a review or rate it. You might not think it makes a difference, but it does.

Besides actual currency (money), the currency of today’s writing world is reviews. Reviews, good or bad, tell other people that an author is worth reading.

As an “indie” author, I need all the help I can get. I’m hoping that since you made it this far into my book, you have some sort of opinion on it.

Would you mind sharing that opinion? It only takes a second.

  Thanks,

  Nick Thacker

  A Brief Note...

I’m guessing because he keeps mentioning me in his books, I should return the favor. So I hereby dedicate this book to my good friend, Kevin Tumlinson.

In all seriousness, I really should dedicate my entire author career to the guy — after all, I didn’t feel like I was very serious about my writing life until I met Kevin (online, of course, because that’s what the cool kids are doing). I know he’ll argue with that, but it’s true. Kevin helped me realize something: I am a writer, whether I like it or not, so I’d better just own it.

So, here’s to “owning it.” The Ice Chasm marks something around 1 million published words for me. That’s 1 with a lot of zeroes behind it. Crazy. Stephen King wrote that the first million words were practice, and I’m a bit terrified to think that whatever I write next has to be the real deal. No more practice for me!

As for the concept of this one, it’s quite simple. I write the Harvey Bennett thrillers using a simple formula: Cool technology + cool place. For this one, it’s artificial intelligence in Antarctica. I already had a “bad guy,” and if you’ve read either The Enigma Strain or The Amazon Code you’ll be familiar with the villain that appears in this series so far. I wanted to write a villain that was still flawed in a realistic way, to counteract the flaws I’ve given Ben, Julie, Joshua, and everyone’s new favorite character Reggie.

Back to Kevin: we both seem to be orbiting each other, at least in the scope of our work. In his last book there was a very kind mention of me, so I’ve returned the favor (see if you can spot it!). And since we are both loving this genre, we have plans to write some sort of mashup. We’re still trying to figure out who would win in a fight between Dan Kotler and Harvey Bennett (I know, it’s obvious to me, too!).

So here’s to writing, to Kevin, and as always: to you, dear reader!
