My Neighbor's Husband Page 7

“Wow, who knew that a nail salon had so many files,” I remark casually. “I thought there’d be a lot of chemicals and linens, but I guess a business is a business. Everyone has to file paperwork.”

Margot spins on me, her expression angry.

“For your information, we do not belong here. You do not belong here. This is the manager’s office, and should only be used in times of duress.”

  I nod amiably.

“Well, this is definitely a time of duress, sweetheart.”

“You can’t just storm in here and tell me what to do!” Margot says, her voice growing louder and stronger by the minute. “You don’t own me –”

But here, her words are cut off because I lean in to kiss that peachy pink pout. It’s lush and tastes like strawberries, exactly as I remember. She freezes beneath my lips but then melts into me, her arms twining about my neck.

“Margot, sweetheart, I’ve missed you so much,” I breathe against her slim neck. “Have you missed me?”

But then she pulls away, and this time, I see that the girl is literally shaking. There are tears in her eyes, and they begin to pool and spill over as I watch.

“You can’t do this to me, Dane. Please don’t do this to me,” she begs. “It hurts too much.”

Immediately, I gather her into my arms.

“It won’t hurt after I tell you what’s happened, baby girl. Let me start from the beginning.”

She pulls away again, her eyes dull this time.

“You’re having a baby with another woman, Dane,” she says in a slow voice, her syllables over-enunciated. “A baby. There’s no room for me.”

  That’s where she’s gone wrong.

“No,” I say forcefully. “There’s no baby, and there never was.”

Margot blinks and then her head jerks up.

“What? What do you mean? I was there when Amelia told you she was pregnant.”

  I nod.

“Yes, but she made it all up. There was never a baby. There was never a pregnancy, even. She made it all up as a ruse to get back together.”

  Margot looks utterly confused.

“But why? Why would anyone go to such lengths to try to rekindle a relationship? It seems absolutely crazy, not to mention desperate.”

This is the ugly part of the story.

“Margot, listen to me. I think Amelia has lost her mind, not to mention her grasp of reality. You know that when we divorced, I suspected that she was having an affair with someone in her department, right?”

  Margot nods.

“Yes, but that must have stopped when she found out she was pregnant. Or that she wasn’t pregnant,” she says with some confusion.

  I shake my head again.

“Amelia was never pregnant, either by me or this other professor. Professor Gerry is his name. Evidently, Gerry is a philanderer who has the attention span of a gnat. He loves luring women from their marraiges, and then turning on them. Once he gets them out, he loses all interest and drops them like a hot potato.”

  Margot gasps.

  “But why?”

  I shrug.

“Who knows? Clearly, these are all people who have their wires crossed. Evidently, Professor Gerry is sixty-five and has done it to at least three women in the past.”

Margot scrunches her brow in confusion.

“Why don’t they fire him? The university must know.”

  I shrug.

“He’s a tenured professor, and has been for thirty years. They can’t fire him over something like this because he’s done nothing criminal. It’s unethical, but it also has nothing to do with his field of study, which is Comparative Literature.”

  Margot shakes her head.

“Oh my god,” she says in a small voice. “It’s totally crazy.”

  I take a deep breath.

“I know because it is totally crazy. Anyways, after Professor Gerry dropped Amelia, all her insecurities came rushing back. She felt like no one wanted her, and that she was getting to be an old maid. She felt that she’d lost her source of stability and support, and went seeking for the last stable thing she had: me.”

“But you’re divorced,” Margot says, like she can’t believe it. “The papers are signed and all.”

  I nod.

“They sure are, but you can’t reason with a crazy woman. Anyhow, Amelia wanted to get back with me and she devised this crazy scheme. She told me that she was pregnant with my child so that I would take her back. Her plan was to make me fall in love with her and then to fake a miscarriage, when in fact, the pregnancy never happened.”

  Margot gasps.

“That’s completely bonkers, and really diabolical, come to think of it. How did you figure out her plan?”

I shake my head with exhaustion.

“Well, pregnant women need to see the ob-gyn often. They need to see the doctor all the time, actually, and Amelia was often disappearing for these so-called doctor’s visits. I was never invited to go, and I started to get suspicious. I looked at her phone one day, and realized that there were no doctor’s appointments scheduled. She was just driving to the next town over and getting a coffee while enjoying herself. You can’t drink much coffee when you’re pregnant either, and I guess she was trying to do it where I couldn’t see.”

  Amelia stares at me.

“So she made up the whole thing.”

  I nod.

“She did, and when I confronted her about it, she tried to deny it at first. But she had no proof of the baby. There were no ultrasounds, no blood tests, and honestly, there was no bump either. She’s always been a thin woman, but you can’t be that thin and six months pregnant.”

Margot shakes her head with disbelief, unable to form words in her shock. So I continue.

“When she finally admitted it, Amelia was crying, screaming, and creating a commotion. Not only that, but she still couldn’t see the evil that lay behind her plan. She kept saying that there was no baby, but that we could conceive one going forward.”

  Margot gasps, her face pale.

  “And you said?”

“I said absolutely not,” I bark. “And I threw her out of my house. Her stuff too. I called the movers and had them ship her things to a storage unit.”

“Oh my god,” gasps Margot. “Where is she now?”

  I sigh, feeling weary.

“That, I don’t know. It’s the beauty of being divorced, baby girl. Amelia is not my responsibility, she’s not my significant other, and she’s not someone I care about anymore. She’s gone, and I haven’t seen her ever since she left my property.”

Margot puts both hands to her cheeks. Her eyes are as round as saucers.

“Oh my goodness,” she mumbles. “This is incredible.”

I nod grimly before taking her hands in my own.

“That’s why I wanted to talk to you,” I say in a soft voice. “I had to tell you all this, and ask you to forgive me because without you, Margot, my life has been pure hell. I haven’t gotten a single wink of sleep because I think of you all the time. I’ve been living in misery, and the moment I could, I came to find you.”

  Tears swell in her eyes.

“I still can’t believe it was all a hoax, Dane,” she says in a soft voice. “We were parted for what I thought was forever because of what your ex did.”

  I nod grimly.

“Yes, but I’m never going to let that happen again because I love you, Margot Morgan. You mean the world to me, and sure, we’ve encountered a bumpy ride together, but never again. Do you love me, baby girl?”

The curvy brunette smiles through the tears in her eyes and bends forward to place her lips against mine.

“I do, Dane Jones, and I want to be yours.”

With that, a surge of possession overwhelms me and I drag her into my arms once more because this woman and I belong together. We were separated by the evil deeds of a woman who’s clearly insane, but through good luck and some dogged detective work, I’ve unraveled the misde
eds that threatened to keep up separated. Now, I’ll never let her go again.

“I love you,” I say possessively again for good measure.

She looks at me, a graceful whisper on her lips.

  “I love you too.”

And with that, our lips touch and we’re swept away into a heavenly future.

  Epilogue

  Margot

  A year later.

  I giggle.

“Dane, I don’t think the bidder had this in mind when he won the doggie date with Buster. After all, it’s not just Buster on the date. It’s me, you, and also our baby in my stomach.”

  My husband merely growls.

“I don’t care what the bidder wants. If my wife and child want to accompany me on this doggy date, then so be it. We’re taking a stroll as a family, and it’s worth every minute.”

I smile again, cradling my belly in the warm sunshine.

“Are you even going to write the thousand word essay?” I ask saucily.

My husband doesn’t hesitate for a moment.

“I am,” he confirms. “You’ve convinced me because this whole doggie dating thing wasn’t my scene at all, but honey, you’ve worked your magic”

I laugh joyously because my man always does what’s right. I know he’s not into doggy dating for charity, nor tapping away at his laptop recounting one such doggy date. But despite his gruff ways, he has an open mind and a warm heart, and I love him all the more for it.

“I think Melody enjoys this walk too, by the way,” I say softly, indicating my huge belly.

  Dane’s eyes go wide.

“It’s a girl?” he breathes. “You found out?”

  I nod gently.

“Yes, today at the doctor’s office they confirmed it. You’re going to be daddy to a little girl soon, Dane.”

My husband bends down to press a grateful kiss to my lips even as Buster and his new friend bark at a squirrel.

“You mean everything to me, Margot. You and the baby. I’m so lucky to have you both.”

I kiss him back as we amble happily back to our house. After all, things have worked out perfectly for us. After Dane discovered his ex’s fraud, he was determined to cause her harm. I don’t know what he had in mind: perhaps a lawsuit or reporting her to the university. But instead, I stepped in because clearly, Amelia is mentally ill. We reported her to the university, but specifically to the Department of Mental Health. Since then, Amelia’s been under their care, and hopefully she improves.

But it’s not our concern anymore because we have no legal, financial, nor emotional ties to her. She’s my husband’s ex and completely out of our lives. I’m happy for that, and grateful that we’ve been able to move on easily.

Because after Amelia was committed, Dane asked me to marry him, and I responded with a joyful yes. After what we’d been through, marriage was the natural next step. We were wed in a giant white wedding, with a huge six-foot cake, with Buster as a member of the wedding party. It was a night to be remembered because of the amazing music and even better food, but also because we conceived our beautiful daughter that night. Dane will truly become a father this time around, and he’s over the moon at the thought.

When we get back to the house, we let the dogs into the yard and then step into the coolness of the house. Being so hugely pregnant is exhausting, and I settle onto the couch with my belly protruding.

“Wow,” I say, wiping sweat from my brow. “Who knew that a fifteen-minute stroll could turn me into a sweating pig?”

But Dane turns to me with serious eyes.

“No, you’re beautiful, Margot. You’re glowing from the pregnancy, and actually, I’d love it if you stayed this size after giving birth. You’re an Earth Mother, and the extra weight suits you.”

  I stare at him.

“But Dane, I’ve put on sixty pounds. I’m in my third trimester and ready to pop.”

  He merely shrugs.

“You look heavenly, sweet girl, and good enough to eat. In fact, I wouldn’t mind eating some of that right now,” he adds with a devilish grin. With that, my gorgeous husband kneels down on the floor between my knees and slowly lifts the hem of my dress.

“No panties, hm?” he asks with an arched brow.

  I giggle.

“I just overheat so easily now that I figured it was easier to leave out the lingerie. Do you like?” I ask, spreading my knees to show him my glistening slit. Sure enough, the pink pulls apart slowly, and with a hungry growl, my husband leans forward to devour my flower with his mouth.

“You taste so fucking good,” he mutters into my folds. “Like absolute heaven.”

I lean back while moaning deliriously.

“Mmm, Dane. Yes, just like that.”

But after a few minutes, my husband wants more. He gets up and strips my dress off of me before ripping off his clothes in one go. I gasp and stare at him because the man I’m married to is as handsome as a god. He’s got a broad chest, defined abs, and thick, tree-trunk thighs. Even more, he has an enormous rod that’s currently dripping from the tip with need.

“Let me,” I breathe, leaning forward to take it into my mouth. But instead, my man merely reaches for some lube and drizzles the warm liquid all over his pulsing pole.

“I don’t want to hurt the baby,” he growls with fierce eyes, “so I think it’s safer to take you the back way.”

I giggle while turning with cumbersome movements so that I’m on my hands and knees, my hands gripping the couch back.

“I agree you would bump the baby’s head because you’re so long,” I say coyly. “So yes, give it to me in my bottom. It feels so good when you do that.”

After all, Dane and I have no inhibitions around one another. Both of our minds are always in the gutter, which is why we’re having anal sex when I’m in my third trimester and about to go into labor. But my husband doesn’t hesitate. He lines himself up at my bottom hole and slowly begins to press. He’s huge and my bud is tight, so I grip the couch hard, staring forward with determination.

  “More,” I breathe. “Unnnnh.”

He presses insistently once again, and then with a small pop, it happens. His head is embedded in my tiny hole, and I moan.

“Oh god, you’re big,” is my delirious cry. “Fuuuuck.”

But my husband’s gotten good at taking me there. He leans forward to kiss my shoulder and then wraps his arms around my waist.

“Here you go,” he croons into my ear. “Take Daddy’s big pole into your butt.”

I writhe and cry a bit more, but ultimately hold still as he slides that enormous ten-inch shaft into my rusty star.

“Oh Daddy,” I cry again, once it’s embedded all the way. “Unnh.”

With that, Dane begins a deep slide in and out. I feel so full, and it’s absolutely magnificent to boot. Who knew I’d enjoy having my ass cherry pummeled like this over and over again? But I do, and within minutes, he and I are exploding and soaring into the stars.

“Fuck!” he roars, bellowing his manly rage into the heavens as great gusts of seed blast into my backside. “Shit!”

I merely hang my head and let out small mewls as my bottom and pussy contract, pulling that sweet man seed deep inside. I hate wasting his man milk because every drop is so precious.

After a few minutes, we’re done and Dane collapses against my back. We lie together for a while, gasping and panting as our bodies try to recover. Delicious shudders continue to run through my most private parts and I let out breathy cries of ecstasy mixed with relief.

Once it’s done, I turn to my husband dreamily.

“It was amazing, wasn’t it?” I ask in a soft voice.

“It was,” he confirms, placing a gentle kiss on my lips. “Because you mean the world to me, Margot. Once upon a time, I was your neighbor’s husband. But now, I’m your husband forever.”

Our lips meet then, as our souls join and our hearts soar into heaven. I never expected to meet a man like Dane, much less marry a man lik
e him. But a girl can get lucky, right? And with this amazing man, the possibilities are endless.

All I can do at this point is stare at the handsome man. I have no idea what he’s talking about.

“Um, I’m sorry. I have to say that I’m totally lost,” is my admission. “We’re talking about college, right?”

Mr. Morgan laughs again, his wavy black hair falling in an adorable queue over one eye. He un-crosses his legs and leans forward, making me wriggle in my seat a bit. He’s very handsome and I can’t help but be attracted.

Putting his elbows to his knees and pressing his fingers together at his lips, he taps them to his mouth for a moment and then looks up at me.

“No, that’s not what I mean. I am your sponsor, and I’m funding your scholarship. In return, you have entered a trial of sorts here at Hawthorne.”

  My stomach drops.

“There’s a trial period? You mean my scholarship isn’t for sure? I wasn’t aware of that.”

He smiles again, his eyes flickering down to my heaving breasts and back up to my eyes. I have to admit, I don’t really mind. In fact, feeling his gaze on me turns me on, like I’m going hot and cold at once. He continues, explaining exactly what he means.

“You will spend a month getting to know me, and if we’re compatible, when you graduate you will receive both a high school diploma and a golden ticket.”

Tilting my head to the side, I’m still utterly confused.

“A golden ticket to what? Do you have the inside track to a particular college? You could get me into the institution, no questions asked?”

He sits up and puts his hands out to each side.
