He paused to give everyone a moment to digest that news. After the assembled group had settled, he pressed on. “My daughter Red has chosen Max as a mate. The two would like to be officially recognized by the pack.” He smiled proudly as applause broke out in the room.
Multiple members of the pack shouted out their congratulations and well wishes. It was enough to make Red’s heart swell to bursting. She hadn’t realized just how supportive their little group could be. Her father had done an amazing job of assembling a strong, loyal community. She was so very proud of him in that moment.
Her father cleared his throat and pressed on. “Max will also be acting as my second-in-command.” Hank’s demise was no news to the pack, nor was the man mourned. It seemed he’d abused and run afoul of most of the people gathered before them. Everyone had been more than relieved to see him go. They were also more than happy to let Max step into the position, as most members of the pack were not looking to climb the ranks. They were content with her father’s leadership and choices. “Max is new to the region, so I encourage you all to help him in any areas he might need assistance. I have every confidence he’ll quickly slide into his new role and make our community a better place to live.”
Applause once again erupted from the small gathering of people. He waited patiently for it to disperse. Then with a wave over his shoulder at Max, he said, “I’ll give him the floor for a few minutes to introduce himself. I thank you all for your attendance and support.”
As her father stepped back to allow Max the center of the floor, Red tugged on his hand to catch his attention. “You’ll do great, Max. I have confidence in you.”
Max smiled down at her before lowering his mouth to hers in a kiss of appreciation. She didn’t care that the entire community was looking on. She loved this man and wanted everyone to know.
“Knowing that I get to be with you is all that matters.” He smiled again, and his eyes crinkled in the corners. “That tells me I’m right where I’m meant to be.”
She returned his smile with one of her own. “Right by my side. That’s where you belong.”
“And I have no intention of leaving.” He gave her another quick kiss before turning and jogging into the area vacated by her father.
As she watched him address the pack, Red’s heart swelled with pride. He would make a good second to her father, and one day, he would make a good pack leader. He would make a good mate, a good husband, and a good father. She couldn’t believe how lucky she’d gotten. She’d gone and fallen in love with the big, bad wolf, and he made her happier than she could ever have imagined.
