I returned the cash to the envelope and pulled out a few of the documents. Dottie’s old passport was back at the hotel. I would have to retrieve it at some point and give it back. Or destroy it.

I grimaced as I caught sight of the name on the cover of the new passport. ‘Oh, very funny.’ I could just imagine the Colonel chuckling to himself as he scribbled it down. ‘“Mr R J Bland.” What kind of a name is that?’

‘I believe it is what you asked for, Monsieur.’ Lefranc smiled, peering across at the passport in my hands. ‘Where will you go next?’

‘I quite fancied Spain,’ I said. ‘See what the Dagos are up to.’ Perhaps they would know how to make a decent cup of tea.

‘The Colonel asks that you leave a forwarding address. He may have a job for you, Monsieur, in the very near future.’

I put the documents down on the table. ‘Oh. What kind of job?’

Lefranc took a sip of his coffee. His moustache was twitching a second time. ‘That you will have to discover for yourself.’
