Southern Attraction: The College Years Page 8

“Well, they have been going on for a while. Each time they are different. It’s hard to explain.”

“Have you talked to anyone about it?” He asked.

“Yes. I’m seeing a therapist. He said it was due to stress basically.”

“And right now you’ve had your fair share of stress,” he said.

“Yeah. But I don’t want to talk about that. I want to hear about what has been happening with you. Whatever happened with you and Stephanie?” She asked.

“You don’t beat around the bush, do you?” He said as he smiled.

“I guess not. So what happened?”

"Let's just say that she had a wondering eye and leave it at that."

"I'm so sorry. I had no idea. I was hoping things would work out for you two," Heather replied.

"Well, sometimes things work out as they should. School has been intense, and I needed that time to study. So how has school been for you? Other than this happening."

"Pretty crazy. I changed my major, quit cheerleading, and joined a volunteer group."

"Wow, you have been busy," Shawn said as he smiled.

"So do you want to watch the game with me tonight?" Heather asked.

"Yeah. I didn't know if you would be up for it, but that's why I came by."

"Why wouldn't I be up for it?" She inquired.

"Oh, I just meant, with Mick being sick, that's all."

"Okay. I see. Yeah, Mick is sleeping, so let's watch it. Can you find the channel?"

"Sure. While I look for the channel, can you round us up some snacks?" Shawn asked.

It wasn't long after Shawn and Heather got comfortable on the couch that the game started. The referee flicked the coin and Alabama won the toss. They decided to let LSU kick off first and take offense. Joe Wilson kicked the ball down to the 10-yard line.

"Not too bad for LSU," Heather stated.

"Hey there. That's my team remember."

"I totally forgot. Sorry. I guess we are officially rivals then," Heather replied.

"Yeah, I guess so. Anyway, that was not like Alabama to take offense first. I guess they want to get the first touchdown."

"What do you mean the first touchdown?" Heather asked.

"They are afraid of LSU. They know they are going to score, so they want to get on the scoreboard first."

"I seriously doubt that," she replied.

"I wouldn't doubt it. LSU got a better team than Alabama this year." "You got to be dreaming," Heather replied.

The more intense the game got, the closer Shawn edged his way toward Heather on the couch. She didn't seem to notice because she was excited how the game was going. Jake had been playing since the beginning of the game, but it didn't seem to bother her too much. For once, she wasn't afraid of him getting injured. She was too excited about Alabama winning against LSU. This seemed to irritate Shawn, but being with Heather made it worthwhile.

As Shawn drove home, he couldn't help thinking about Heather. He couldn't believe he was falling for her again. He knew she was with Jake, but sensed that something had been off in their relationship. Maybe it was the way she sounded when she saw him. Maybe it was because she was alone in Huckleburg without him. He didn't know but was determined to find out why. Especially if it meant he had a chance with her again.

  Chapter 21

Alabama won the SEC championship 21 to 9. Jake had played most of the game. Heather thought she would hear from him after the game but didn't. Shawn decided to head home because it was getting late. He knew Heather would have to get up early to help with Mick.

"Do you mind if I call you sometime this week?" Shawn asked.

"Of course not. Maybe we can go get something to eat?"

"Sounds good. I'll talk to you later."

Heather was exhausted after the game was over; she decided to straighten the living room before she went to bed. It was hard to fall asleep, even though she was tired. She kept thinking about the game, about Shawn coming over, about her uncle. Thoughts raced through her mind. She turned on some relaxation music and soon was able to fall asleep.

The next morning, the phone rang. It was Jake calling.

"Hey, Honey. How are you doing?" Heather asked.

"Little tired still. How are you? How is Mick?" Jake asked.

"I'm fine, and uncle Mick is doing well too. So how was the game?"

"It was unbelievable. Such a rush. Sorry I didn't call. We were all up late, talking about the game. It was hard to calm down after such an intense game. Did you see me play?"

"Of course. I didn't think you would get to play, though, but you played really good. I can't believe you made a touchdown."

"Well, the team made it easy for me. It's all about teamwork."

"Yes, but you caught the ball, to begin with. They helped, but you scored. So proud of you."

"Thanks, Babe. So how does it feel to be home? Did you pass your exams?" Jake inquired.

"Yeah. Thanks for talking to the President for me. So you have another week to go, don't you?"

"Yes, then I'll be home. Can't wait to see you," Jake replied.

"I know. I miss you and can't wait to see you either."

"Well, I better go. Got some studying to do. I'll call you later."

"Okay, talk to you later. Love you."

  "Love you too," Jake said.

Heather was glad she was home in Huckleburg but didn't realize how much she missed Jake until she spoke with him. She felt a part of her was missing, not seeing him. Somehow being away from him helped to clarify things for her. Mike had been a good friend and perhaps a little more, but Jake would always be who she loved. Even after spending some time with Shawn, she couldn't help wishing Jake was there with her.

Heather knew they still had things they needed to work out, but she was determined to make it work with him. She had to figure out a way to get him to quit playing football. She was afraid that he would be injured. Even after he played such a good game, it was not a long time career. Players get injured all the time. If he got drafted, later on, he would have to travel and perhaps move away.

Huckleburg was now her home. She didn't want to move anywhere else. She didn't even like being away at school in Tuscaloosa. If she could find a way to take classes here in Huckleburg, she would. At least she had a couple of months before she had to return to school. She decided she would check on taking some classes at the community college.

Huckleburg was a small country town, and they didn't have a lot of businesses around. So she would probably have to travel to the next town to find a good job or even a place where she could join a volunteer group. Even so, she still loved Huckleburg. She loved the close-knit feel of family with her neighbors. Most of the town had been rebuilt after the destruction of the 2011 tornado that had destroyed most of it. A new park was created close to the middle of town.

Wilson Morgan Park had a walking trail, a playground, and a small pond that attracted a few small ducks. Fishing was allowed at the park, with a permit; which Mick had enjoyed doing before his illness. A lot of people would go there on their lunch break to enjoy the scenery and peace. A small water feature was carved into the side of the pond, which resembled a small waterfall with lively plants and colorful rocks. It would make a perfect place for a wedding.

  Chapter 22

Sally came by the house the next morning to check on Mick. She brought a sweet potato casserole and chicken poulet for dinner. Sally was a great cook, which is one of the things that Mick liked about her. Not to mention her sassiness when she talked and walked. She had a sway when she walked that seemed to draw unwanted attention. Sally’s taste of clothes was a little old-fashioned, but it didn’t seem to bother Mick. His clothes weren’t going to win some fashion contest either.

“Hey, Heather, where is Mick?” Sally asked.

“He is in the bathroom. His home health nurse is helping him.”

“Oh okay. Well, I brought some dinner. Is there any tea made?” Sally questioned.

p; “Yeah, I just made some.”

“Why don’t you help me set the table. I’m sure Mick will be ready in a minute, and I’m starving. I didn’t eat any breakfast this morning.”

“You didn’t? Why not?” Heather asked.

“Well I had some errands, and I was making this dinner. I just didn’t have time.”

“Oh, Well, you get some glasses and ice, and I’ll get the plates and silverware.”

As soon as the table was prepared, Mick, and Cindy, the nurse came into the living room.

  “Something smells good,” Cindy stated.

“We got some dinner ready. You are welcome to stay and eat with us. We got plenty,” Sally replied.

“I’m sorry I can’t. I still have three more patients to see today.”

“We can make you a plate to take with you if you like,” Sally replied.

“No that’s okay. Thanks anyway. I better go,” Cindy replied.

“Thanks for your help today,” Heather said.

“No problem. See you next week.”

After Cindy left, Sally helped Mick sit down at the table. Sally made Mick, Heather, and herself a plate. Heather poured three glasses of tea and passed them around the table. Sally sat next to Mick; Heather sat across from them on the other side.

“So how have you been sweetheart?” Sally asked Mick.

“I’m good,” Mick replied with a smile. Sally could always make him smile, even without trying. He was very fond of her.

“Mick, I see you and Sally are getting close,” Heather stated.

Mick looked at Heather and smiled. “Yeah.”

“So when are you two getting married?” Heather asked jokingly.

“Heather, don’t pressure him. He’ll ask me when he’s ready,” Sally interrupted.

“I’m not pressuring him. I just see how close and comfortable you two are. Mick, you aren’t getting any younger either. Time to enjoy life a little,” Heather replied.

"Do you wanna get married?” Mick turned to ask Sally.

“Sure one day. When you are ready and feeling better.” Sally replied, thinking that it was a rhetorical question.

“I’m ready. Why don’t we?” Mick responded.

  “Are you serious?” Sally asked.

“Yep!” Mick said as he took Sally’s hand and kissed it.

“You really mean it. You really want to marry me?”

“I sure do. We can do it next week if you want,” Mick replied.

“Yes, of course, I do. I just want you to be sure. I mean you just got out of the hospital.”

  “I’m sure. I love ye.”

“Mick, that’s so sweet. Sally, I can help plan the wedding if you want me to,” Heather replied.

“Yes, I do. Besides, I don’t know anything about planning a wedding.”

“I would love to help,” Heather said.

“I just want Mick to be well enough for the ceremony. I don’t want to rush things,” Sally stated.

“Why don’t you wait until school is out. It will be out in a little over a week; Jake can be Mick’s best man if he wants. I can be your bridesmaid. Anything you want,” Heather responded.

  “Sounds good,” Mick replied.

“Is this really happening?” Sally said.

Sally was so happy and excited but anxious too. She worried that Mick wouldn’t be healthy enough for the wedding. She worried that he might change his mind. Mick had never been the dating or marrying man. Was he just saying it because Heather brought it up, or was he really wanting to, Sally thought.

“Sally, it's happening. I’ll help you,” Heather replied.

“Will you go with me to find a dress?” Sally asked.

“I would be honored,” Heather replied.

After Sally left the house to go home, Heather sat down to talk with Mick.

“How are you feeling Mick? Really?” Heather inquired.

“I feel real good,” Mick responded.

“Are you really ready for marriage?”

“I know what I want,” Mick informed Heather.

“I don’t mean to question you. I was joking earlier, but you ran with it.”

“I wanted to ask her for a while.”

“Then, I am truly happy for you. Leave it to me. I’ll help get you get a tux and so forth.”

“Glad you are helping. Makes me happy.”

  Chapter 23

Heather began making arrangements for the wedding. Sally had chosen June 5th for the big day. She chose lavender and yellow for her colors. Sally went to the Something Blue Shoppe to choose the Wedding Dress. Somehow Stephanie had invited herself into the wedding. Sally told her she could be a bridesmaid.

Sally picked out a halter style wedding dress that had a back zipper, featured a chapel train with short sleeves, and had lace all over. The design helped hide Sally’s large waist-line and voluptuous curves. The price tag was affordable, considering the size of the bride and designer label.

“You are going to be a beautiful bride,” Heather remarked.

“Thank you. I hope Mick likes it,” Sally responded.

“He will. I’m sure of it,” Heather said.

“So what do you want me and Stephanie to wear?” Heather inquired.

“Why don’t you pick a yellow dress out that you both like. It doesn’t matter to me. I’m sure you will look great. I have to go and check on Mick. I’ll see you later.”

It didn’t take long before Heather and Stephanie found a matching dress. They both liked a short yellow dress that had capped sleeves. It was the perfect color to match the flowers that Heather and Sally had chosen. The dress was the right size, so it didn’t need to be altered, which was great considering how soon the wedding was.

...Jake finally arrived back in town. After Heather had clued him in on being in the wedding, he had called a tailor to come by the house to help fit him and Mick into their tuxedos. Mick had asked Shawn to stand with him as a groomsman. Heather knew it was because of the hospitality he and his family had given them.

Heather was super excited about the wedding; she worked really hard to plan a perfect day for her uncle and Sally. She stopped to have dinner with Jake and his mother before returning home.

"Glad you could eat with us, Sue," Heather said.

"Me too. It's been a while. Glad you are doing well. Jake told me about your uncle."

"It was a little scary at first, but he is doing better. Did Jake tell you that he is getting married," Heather asked.

"Yeah. I'm so happy for him. Sally is a good woman. She'll be good to him," Sue replied.

"I know. I'm really fond of her. They have had a secret crush on each other for a while. It is good that they are finally getting married. You are invited to the wedding, of course."

"Thanks, I'll have to get me a nice dress."

"It doesn't matter. Just glad you are coming," Heather said.

After Heather returned to the house later that night, she realized Sally and Mick hadn't picked out a location for the wedding.

"Uncle Mick, Sally. Where are you two going to tie the knot," Heather inquired.

  "Don't know yet," Sally replied.

"I've been looking around, and there is the park, Wilson Morgan, that would be nice," Heather stated.

"That's nice, but I thought we could have it here at the farm," Sally replied.

"What do you think, uncle Mick?" Heather inquired.

"I don't care. I'm just glad you are here," Mick replied.

"I'm glad I can be here for you and Sally on your big day. It's funny though; I never thought you would be getting married. I am so happy for both of you."

"Thank you! That means a lot to me. I'm really happy you are going to be part of my family soon."

"It feels like we are already family," Heather replied.

"Thank you, that means a lot to me. And I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you helping with the wedding. I don't think I would have had the first clue how to plan a wedding. You seem like y
ou have an act for it," Sally said as she gave Heather a hug.

"So the farm it is then," Heather stated.

  "Yep, that's good," Mick said.

"I think we can hold it all outdoors. Bring in some tables and chairs and a few decorations, and it will be perfect," Heather responded.

"So where is your fellar?" Mick asked Heather.

"Jake is at home. He is staying with his mother while school is out."

"How is Sue doing?" Sally inquired.

"She is doing great. She is volunteering at the school. She is working as a teacher's aide."

"That's great! Glad she is doing well. So is Jake coming by tomorrow," Sally inquired.

"Not sure. I'm going to ask him to help me get some things together for the wedding. Not too many days left," Heather replied.

"I know I'm getting excited," Sally replied.

"Uncle Mick, did you get the rings yet?" Heather asked.

"No, but I can get them tomorrow. What size you wear Sally?"

"I wear a size 8. My little fingers are fat," Sally replied.

"You better get a rush on them. They may have to be sized," Heather replied.

  Chapter 24

The day of the wedding was finally here. Everyone was running around like crazy. Shawn was searching for the rings that Mick had misplaced. Sally and Stephanie were getting their hair done. Heather was going over all the final arrangements, checking to see if everything was arranged as she had specified. Jake was having trouble getting on his tuxedo. Mick was singing as if he didn't have a care in the world. Then suddenly, the doorbell rang. Heather quickly ran toward the door, expecting it to be the preacher. To her surprise, Mike was standing at the doorway dressed in a nice tan colored suit.

"Mike, what are you doing here?" Heather said as she tried not to sound bewildered.

"Your uncle invited me. I told him I was a friend from school and so he invited me."

"So you just decided to come then, right."

"Yeah, why not. I never pass on free food," Mike said jokingly.

"It's probably uh not a good idea that ...that you're here," Heather stumbled over her words.

"I tried to call you and even sent you a few texts. Why have you been ignoring me?"
