Doctor Steamy Page 29

I tipped one of the couches back on its legs. “Check the cushions,” I said. Each of the kids shoved their hands inside the cushions. “I found one. I found one,” said Peter, holding up a chocolate coin in a gold wrapper.

“Look for more. Look for more,” cried Kyle and so began all three of them scouring the room for more chocolates. They found more chocolates inside vases, under knick knacks, behind photographs, everywhere I could think of to hide them.

At long last I said, “I think that’s it, kids.”

“No,” said Aileen. “Look up there.” I knew Aileen, who was older and taller, would notice where I’d hid the last bit of my very special treasure.

  “What’s that, honey?” Susan asked.

“My shoes. Look. They put my shoes up on top of the hutch.”

“How in the world....” Patrick pretended to be surprised. “I guess I have to get that, don’t I?”

“Well, you are the tallest,” I said, my heart fluttering like a bumble bee’s.

We all watched as Patrick reached up to take down Aileen’s pink high-top sneakers. “What’s this?” He reached inside one shoe and pulled out a little blue stick, then dropped it back in, suddenly frozen. He swiveled around and dropped into a chair. “Honey?”

His smile was spectacular, the kind that makes you think of sunbeams He clapped his hands once then steepled them below his chin. “Does this mean?” His smile was spectacular, the kind that makes you think of sunbeams and cupcakes with lots and lots of frosting.

  “It’s pink isn’t it?”

He picked up the stick again, holding it to the light, then stared at me. “Pink is good, right?”

“Only if you want to have a baby with me,” I said, my heart doing flips.

He leapt from the tapestry covered chair, then crossed the room so fast my head spun as he lifted me off my feet and spun me around.

  “Patrick? Patrick, put me down.”

  “Oh. Oh right.”

I dusted myself off. Or pretended to. “Sooo,” I began. “How do you feel about being a father? I mean, I know we said we would wait and I still have Grad school to finish, but...”

“Baby, I’ve never wanted anything more in my life.”
