  Afterlife

Naked from the waist down on the examination table, I was suddenly self-conscious about how long it’d been since I shaved my legs. I hadn’t noticed how hairy they’d gotten until I saw them propped up in front of me. The gynecologist asked me to scoot to the edge of the table. “Now, here comes something cold,” he said as he slid in a metal instrument to spread my vagina. Next, he slipped what looked like a large condom onto a plastic baton that he eased into me. He studied the screen, moved the instrument at different angles, searching. “There we go!” he said. “There it is.” He turned the screen toward me. “See, there—there’s a little heart beating inside you.”

  Cosmogenesis

On a dark screen I see a little light blinking rapidly.

  Second heart: my way out.

Little heart, thrive, grow, and beat in time with mine.

You are my light out of this darkness.
