Chapter One
Aleena hung up the phone then stood and stared out the window. Her thoughts were a jumble after talking to her friend Nia.
She jumped when arms came around her.
“What’s going on, baby?”
She looked over her shoulder at the most wonderful man in the world. Kaleb had changed her life and made her happier than she ever thought possible.
“I was talking to Nia.”
“How’s she doing?”
“Not good. She says she got through the funeral and has had movers come and store everything in a secure storage place so her brother can’t get to it.”
Nia’s father had died a month before, and Nia was at a loss of what to do. Her friend didn’t know if she should stay in the town they grew up in, where she had no one left or move on. Fortunately, she’d gotten life insurance from her father, so she didn’t have to make a decision quickly. The problem was her brother, Russ, who was trying to contest the will and was harassing Nia.
Russ had left home before he graduated from high school. He’d gotten in with a wrong crowd, and he’d been in trouble ever since. Nia had stopped counting the times he’d been in jail since it had happened so often.
The only time Russ had paid his father and sister a visit was when he’d needed money. If she or her dad didn’t have any to give, he blatantly stole from them. They’d changed the locks on the house several times, but he always got in.
Nia had told her that after her father passed away, she was terrified Russ would break in while she was there alone. The last time, he’d brought a few of his friends, and they made her feel extremely uncomfortable, and the dark carnal looks they gave her made her skin crawl.
“Where is she right now?” Kaleb asked.
“At her house. Nia thought about moving into an apartment with security, but her brother catches her when she’s out. She told me one of the last times her brother beat on her. She says she thought he was high at the time. But now he’s also bringing around his friends to harass her, and they’ve tried to touch her.”
Aleena turned in his arms and laid her head on his chest. “I’m so afraid for her. I want to go and see if I can help…”
“Absolutely not, baby girl. She needs to come here.”
Aleena leaned her head back to see his face. “Really?”
“Yes. She can stay with us until she decides what to do.”
She squealed and hugged him tightly, making him grunt.
“Easy. Get her on the phone for me.”
Aleena hurried to call her friend back, and the sound of her friend’s voice made chills run up her spine. “Nia … Nia, what’s wrong?”
Her eyes filled with tears, and she looked at Kaleb. “She’s hiding in her house. Her brother is there and got in somehow.”
“Has she called the police?”
“Yes. They’re on their way.”
“Let me talk to her.” Kaleb took the phone and put it on the speaker. “Hi, honey. This is Kaleb. Where are you hiding?”
“In the attic.”
“Can he hear you?”
“I’m being very quiet. I don’t think he knows I’m here. The house was dark except for a light I was using to go through some things I left in the attic. I turned it off right away when I heard him.”
“That’s good. I want you to get as far away from the door as you can and hide.”
“I am,” she whispered. “I also unscrewed the lightbulb, so there won’t be light if he tries to come up here.”
“You’re a very smart girl.”
“Thank you, sir.”
Aleena heard Nia moving around but likely being as quiet as possible.
“I’m afraid I’m going to trip over something. I can barely see with just the light from the windows.”
“Then stop and hide behind the closest thing.”
“Okay. Oh, hey, I hear sirens.”
“Stay where you’re at. I’m calling the police and telling them where you are. They’ll come to get you in the attic.”
“Okay.”
Aleena listened to her friend’s frightened breathing as Kaleb stood off to the side and made his call.
“I hear running feet,” Nia whispered.
“Good,” Aleena said. “Hopefully, they heard the sirens and got scared.”
Kaleb came back. “The officers are in the house, and one is coming for you. Your brother is gone.”
Nia exhaled. “Good. He’s getting worse, and I think some of it might be the drugs he’s on.”
“It’s possible,” Kaleb told her.
There was a thump as the attic door was opened and then footsteps.
Aleena heard Nia exhale in relief.
“They’re here,” Nia said.
“Good. Go with them and hand your phone to the police officer.”
“Yes, sir.”
Nia handed the man her phone and waited.
“This is Officer Jones. Who is this?”
“It’s Kaleb Spencer. I live in Jacksonville, Arkansas, with Nia’s best friend. We’re going to move her out here with us as soon as we can.”
“Probably a good idea. Russel Langley is a pretty bad guy, and the people he hangs with are worse.”
“If we can get her secured for the night, I’ll figure out how to get her here.”
“I can put her in the Hilton. They have the best security in town.”
“That would be great.”
Aleena stood beside Kaleb with her hands clasped tightly together. She wanted her friend there as quickly as possible.
“I’ll have her call you when we get her in her room.”
“Thank you very much, Officer.”
“No problem. She seems like a sweet thing.” He chuckled. “The other cops that came are all surrounding her and listening and smiling at what she’s saying.”
“She is very sweet. I’ll wait to hear from you.”
“Got it.”
Kaleb handed Aleena her phone and pulled her into his arms. “Everything’s going to be all right.”
She nodded and hung on to his waist tightly.
“I know. I’m glad you’re taking care of it. I know she’ll be here soon and in one piece.”
He chuckled. “I’ll do everything I can.”
“I have to tell you she’s pretty independent. She’s had to be. Her father was sick for years, and she took care of him. She did everything.”
“Where is her mom?”
“She died of a brain aneurism when Nia and I were seven.”
“Jesus. Poor girl.”
“I know. I hated leaving her, but at the time, her father was still alive and well, and she wanted to stay with him.”
Kaleb started leading her up the stairs of their house and into their bedroom.
“Why don’t you go and shower? I’ll wait for the call.”
She stood on her tiptoes and kissed him on the mouth before she moved into the bathroom.
Although she knew Kaleb would make sure Nia would get there safely, she wouldn’t feel one hundred percent relaxed until she saw her in person.
Chapter Two
Nia closed and locked the hotel door after the last police officer left. They had all been so nice to her. She didn’t know why five of them had to take her to the hotel, but she wasn’t going to complain.
She was even thrilled they helped pack her bags in her car, and one of them drove it to the hotel so she would have it while she rode with one of the officers.
Officer Jones called Kaleb when they got to her room and told him she was there, and then Kaleb told her to get some sleep. They’d figure out a way to get her to them in the morning.
Nia spent two hours pacing in her hotel room. She had an overwhelming sense of doom that made her want to run. The longer she stayed in the city, the more frightened she became.
At one o’clock in the morning, she decided to start heading toward Arkansas. She knew she wouldn’t sleep, and she’d just keep getting more worked up the longer she stayed in the hotel room.
She packed the few things she’d taken out of her bag when she got there and walked out.
As she strolled out of the elevator, she started to second-guess herself. The shadows and absolute silence of the hotel lobby made goosebumps appear on her arms. Looking around, she couldn’t see any type of threat, so she hurriedly walked out and got in her car.
She pulled out of the parking lot and headed south. In the hours that followed, she stopped a few times for coffee and gas but kept on driving.
It was nine o’clock in the morning when she called Aleena.
“Hey, how did you sleep?”
Nia smiled. “I haven’t.”
“You haven’t slept?” Aleena asked in concern.
“No. I’m too worked up. You know how I get.”
“Yes. I should have thought you’d have insomnia. Kaleb is making plans to have someone come get you.”
“Oh, no. Tell him I’m doing okay. I’m actually in Colorado right now. At least I think I am.”
“Oh, no.”
Nia heard the worry in her friend’s tone. “What?”
“My daddy wants you safe, and when he finds out you took off on your own, he’s going to be angry and worried.”
Nia smiled when Aleena called Kaleb her daddy. It had taken a while to get used to it, but once she’d read up on the type of lifestyle, she knew it was perfect for her friend. “He won’t get mad at you, right?”
“Oh, no. You’ll be the one in trouble.”
Nia giggled. “What can he do to me?”
“Punish you.”
Nia’s stomach tightened. “What? He can’t do that … can he?”
“Oh, yes. He’s taking responsibility for you.”
“I didn’t ask him to.”
“Since you’re my best friend and you’re on your own, he took it upon himself, but I’m glad he did. You need someone to take care of you for once. You’ve always taken care of everyone else.”
“I can’t depend on your daddy. I have to learn to live on my own.”
“No, you don’t. You’ll be staying here until you and daddy figure out your future.”
As much as she wanted to spend time with Aleena, she wouldn’t impose on them.
“No. I can’t let him take time for that.”
“You’re just going to get in more trouble.”
“What’s he going to do, yell at me or spank me?” she asked with a grin.
“He doesn’t ever yell. He’ll definitely spank you.”
“What?” she sputtered.
“Hey, just be grateful he won’t do it the way he does me.”
“How’s that?”
“Usually with a butt plug or his cock in my bottom as he spanks me.”
Nia gasped and swerved. Aleena had told her a bit about her life with him, but she’d never gone into detail about it. The thought of him abusing her friend made her furious. “He hurts you?” she yelled.
“Oh, God, no. Not the way you’re thinking.”
“Then, how?”
Aleena sighed. “I actually love everything he does to me. Sometimes I get in trouble on purpose so he can punish me,” Aleena whispered into the phone.
“I think—”
Aleena interrupted her. “Oh, hi, daddy.”
She heard the rustle of clothing.
“I heard you, baby girl,” he growled.
Nia felt like she was eavesdropping and cleared her throat. “Aleena, I’m going to go. I’ll call you later.”
“No—” Aleena burst out.
Nia heard some mumbling, and she guessed Aleena had her hand over the phone. She was about ready to hang up when Kaleb took the phone. “Nia. I was just told you are driving right now?”
Kaleb’s gruff tone shook her. “Yes, sir. I couldn’t sleep.”
“So, you’re telling me you haven’t slept for over twenty-four hours, and you’re driving through territory you never had before?”
Nia shivered at the authority in his voice. “Yes, sir. But didn’t Aleena tell you, when I get worked up, I won’t sleep. I get insomnia, so I’m used to not sleeping.”
“What are you driving, what highway are you on, and are you close to a town with a hotel?”
She told him the road she was on as she looked around at the vast wilderness surrounding her. She’d seen several cars on the highway with her but nowhere to stop.
“No.”
“Is there anywhere to pull over?”
“No. Listen, I’m not your responsibility. I don’t want you to worry about me. When I get to Jacksonville, I’ll find a hotel to stay in and call you then. It’s up to me to decide what I’m going to do.”
“You just said so many things wrong that we’re going to have to go over.”
“Listen, I’m coming up on construction. Can I call you back?”
She heard him sigh.
“Yes. Please do and be careful, honey. It would break our hearts if anything happened to you.”
Nia felt tears sting her eyelids. It had been a long time since anyone cared about her. Her father had, but he had his disease to deal with for so long he didn’t have the energy to be a parent. That had fallen on her.
“That is very nice. Thank you. I’ll call you later.”
****
Aleena stood beside him with a worried look on her face. He pulled her into his arms.
“She’s going to be okay, baby.”
His heart always tightened with emotion when she cuddled against him and depended on him to take care of everything.
“She’s a little stubborn. But I guess she’s had to be. She’s been taking care of her and her daddy for years.”
Kaleb squeezed her. “Now, she’ll have someone to take care of her.”
Aleena looked up at him.
“Thank you, daddy.”
He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “You’re very welcome.
“What are you going to do?” she asked.
“Let’s go to the office. I’ve got a few calls to make.”
He’d have Nia caught and taken care of within the next few hours, and he knew just the people to call.
Chapter Three
Nia’s stomach dropped when a highway patrol car pulled up behind her on the highway, put their lights on, and then used sirens when she didn’t immediately pull over. She looked down.
“I’m not even speeding, for God’s sake.” She cringed when she heard the officer over the loudspeaker, telling her to pull over.
She pulled off on the shoulder, parked, rolled down her window, and waited. She looked up at the officer who came to stand beside her and stare down at her.
“What did I do?”
“Are you Nia Langley?”
“Yes, what did I do?”
“Can you step out of the car, please?”
“What? Why? I swear I’ve never broken the law in my life.” She narrowed her eyes when she caught his mouth twitch.
“Step out of the car, ma’am.”
“Can you arrest someone for no reason?”
“You’re not being arrested.”
She squeaked when he opened her door, unsnapped her seatbelt, and helped her out. He pulled her to the back of her car.
That was when she noticed another patrol car pull up behind the first one, and then two men step out. “Oh, my God.”
“Just relax, miss.”
“How can I relax when I have the whole department coming to arrest me?”
He couldn’t hold back his smile. “It’s not the whole department, it’s just three of us, and I already told you you’re not being arrested.”
“Then why are you pulling me over? I know I wasn’t speeding, and look,” she said, pointing to her license plate. “My tag is okay and up-to-date. I wasn’t swerving…”
“You’re being detained.”
She threw her arms out. “But why?”
All three of the officers lined up, crossed their arms over their chests, and scowled down at her.
She waited for a moment and then stomped her feet. “Talk to me,” she yelled.
“You’re going to ride in my car. I’m taking you to the station.”
Now she crossed her arms over her chest. “You can’t just do that.” While she waited for him to say something, he stood with a smirk on his face. She turned to one of the others. “He can’t, can he?”
“I’m afraid so, miss.”
She was too tired for this. She’d been shaky before he’d pulled her over. Now, with the shock of having this happen, she could feel her energy reserve start to break apart. Her eyes filled with tears. All three seemed to panic and she got a certain sense of satisfaction.
“Miss, don’t worry, everything will be okay,” one said quickly and awkwardly patted her shoulder.
One of the men took a step away and just looked uncomfortable. And the first one scowled.
