Your Life in Color Page 20

by Dougall Fraser

Finally it was time to begin the talk, and I felt like my body had been plugged into an electric socket. A combination of energy, excitement, and nerves was coursing through me. As I was talking, I could feel my breath getting ahead of me. It was like cosmic caffeine multiplied by 100. In that moment, I started to judge myself. Critical thoughts circled through my mind: A spiritual teacher would be calm. A real teacher would speak slowly. What kind of spiritual teacher starts to sweat during their presentation?

In that moment, while talking, I decided I needed a little break. I would walk the walk and do a brief, conscious meditation. A voice in my head said, Just breathe. You are allowed to pause and regroup. So, without a thought, I told the group that I needed a moment to stop and breathe. I took a sip of water, closed my eyes, and took a few deep breaths. I looked down at my black sweater and reminded myself of my intention.

I turned to the side. Some of the OWN staff sweetly applauded and cheered for a moment. I took a deep breath, and I went back to owning my power. (Get it, OWNing?)

We all experience self-doubt at some point in our lives. Black helped me optimize my energy, but I was still feeling exhilaration and some nervousness. It retrospect, it’s funny to me I struggled with giving myself permission to reconnect. Rather than pretending this day wasn’t a big deal or I wasn’t excited, I wanted to experience this moment as fully as possible. Part of my consciousness was focused on my inner child, that overweight gay kid who used to watch the Oprah show every day, looking for inspiration. Let me tell you, he was jumping for joy that day, and I made sure to honor him by acknowledging the excitement.

But another part of my consciousness was the teacher who had been doing spiritual work for over 18 years, fully intending to teach and uplift this group of people. It made perfect sense to me I would need a moment to regroup and breathe. By grounding myself, I made sure I was as present in that moment as I could be. The rest of the talk went quite well, and I am proud of myself for being both human and teacher in the same breath. After my talk, I stayed to speak with some of the audience members. Then David and I hopped into our car to race over to our Japanese language class. In a full day, I was able to be a fan, an enthusiastic human, a nervous person, a teacher, a student, and an intuitive. Throughout all this, I was constantly using the power of color as my guide.

The layout of this day is the perfect example of how color can play a role in our lives. I have harnessed these energies effectively for many years, and I hope they will work just as well for you and that you feel you have the tools to incorporate energy on every level. What I have come to know is we must approach our lives with a certain level of balance. When we merge the worlds of spirit, body, and emotion, we elevate our energy to its purest form.

There are times when we can get stuck in one dimension or another. On the day that I described, I started with my meditation and set my intention to be grounded and fully integrated. I activated the color on a spiritual level with my visualization. I then activated the color on a physical level, with the color prop being my black sweater. I affirmed the universe would guide me with mini messages by helping me spy the color during my day to remind me of my intention. The result was a fully integrated, powerfully rewarding experience.

If I could leave you with one main suggestion in regards to color energy, it would be this: don’t worry too much about choosing the “right” color to activate in your life. Now that you have this guide and more awareness of color, you know that color has more power to it than just being something pretty for our eyes. Rather than trying to think of the perfect color for you, you can just start using them. Each one will create exciting changes in your energy, and you can continue to adjust how much you use each one. Take note of how they affect you, and if you experience any color differently than I do, great! The important thing is to just dive in and use them.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explore the powerful world of color with me. I have done this work for close to 20 years and absolutely love introducing its potential to people. You now have many tools to help you go forward with color in unlimited ways. Give it a try, and please let me know how it works for you!
