“It’s about my family.” I leaned against the edge of the sofa for support. “They’re evil.”

He laughed. “I know they can be difficult, but evil is probably overstating it.” When I didn’t smile, his expression shifted to one of concern. “How evil are we talking?”

“My mother, Grandma, and Aunt Thora…They’re not like the LeRoux witches. They use dark magic. Energy that I try to avoid as much as possible. And my father and Anton are vengeance demons. Active vengeance demons.”

He gazed at me a moment, appearing uncertain how to respond. “Are they going to be a problem for me?”

I held his hands in mine. “Not if I can help it. It’s the main reason I don’t want anyone to know about us. They don’t want me involved with a human and I worry how they’ll react if they find out.”

“I’m a grown man, Eden, and the police chief in their town. What’s the worst they can do?” My silence seemed to be enough of an answer. Slowly, he nodded. “I see. Thank you for telling me.”

“I would’ve told you sooner, but I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what? That I’d walk away from you because of your family?” He clucked his tongue. “Eden Fury, you should know me better than that by now. I may be a mere mortal, but I’ll walk through the fires of Hell for you.”

“Are you sure about that? Because someday you just might have to.”

He leaned forward and kissed me. “I’ll order my flame-retardant suit today. I’ve been told that polyester is flammable.”

I laughed, feeling lighter than I had in months.

He slotted his fingers between mine. “We’re a team, you and me. I won’t let your family come between us. I promise.”

“Nobody puts Baby in a corner,” I murmured.

“I’ve heard that line before. What’s it from?”

“Dirty Dancing. Feel like watching it?” The idea of snuggling with the chief and watching a movie was immensely appealing right now.

His mouth twitched. “I’ve got an even better idea.” He pulled me into his arms. “Why don’t we go upstairs and make our own version?”

  And so we did.
