LOGAN

by Lynn, Sandi

“Good work, Logan. He’s beautiful.” Brandon smiled.

“Of course he is; look at who his parents are.” I smirked.

After my family left, I made a few calls and then Brooke and I did facetime with her dad and Woo. They were so excited and hopped on the next flight to New York.

I heard Nathan crying through the baby monitor.

“I’ll get him, baby. You go back to sleep.” I kissed her head.

“Thank you. I’m so tired,” she sleepily spoke.

Walking into the nursery, I picked the little guy up from his crib, grabbed a bottle filled with Brooke’s milk, and sat down in the rocking chair. When I placed the bottle in his mouth, he instantly silenced. I couldn’t help but think that between me and Brooke, he was going to be a natural born skater.

“There’s this thing that your daddy does, and it’s called playing ice hockey. You’re going to love the game and you’re going to be one of the greatest players in the NHL. Better than your daddy.” I smiled. “When you get a little older, I’m going to teach you everything you need to know.”

As I looked up, I saw Brooke standing in the doorway, looking as beautiful as ever.

“What if he wants to be a figure skater?” she asked.

“Don’t say things like that, Brooke. Our daughter will be a figure skater.”

“Our daughter? How do you know we’ll even have a daughter?”

“Well, we’ll just have to keep trying until we have one.” I smiled.

“Or we could end up having our own hockey team.” She walked over and kissed Nathan’s head.

I paused for a second and looked up. “That doesn’t sound too bad.”

She softly laughed as she brushed her lips against mine and went back to bed. After Nathan finished his bottle and I burped him, I laid him down on the changing table and changed his diaper before putting him back in his crib. He stirred for a moment, but as soon as I rubbed his back, he fell asleep.

Climbing into bed, I wrapped my arm around Brooke, and she snuggled into me. My life could never be more complete than it was at this very moment. Brooke and Nathan were my entire existence and my world. I’d never dreamed this would happen to someone like me. I could honestly say that being in that accident was the best thing that ever happened. I thought my life was over, but the truth was my life was just beginning. Even though I thought I had it all, I had nothing until the day Brooke walked into my life.

I held her tightly in my arms as I kissed her head.

“I love you so much, baby.”

  “I love you too, Logan.”

“We the jury find the defendant not guilty.”

“Yes.” I silently spoke and turned to my client who let out a sigh of relief. “Congratulations, Bob.” I grinned as I lightly hugged him.

“Thank you, Elijah. This wouldn’t have been possible without you.”

I closed up my briefcase, grabbed it from the table, and walked out of the courtroom. Pulling my phone from my pocket, I noticed I had three missed calls from Vi, a text message from my brother, Nathan, and a voice message from Vi.

  “Elijah, we need to talk.”

I sighed as I rolled my eyes and opened the text message from Nathan.

“Hey, bro. I’m taking off for Paris in a few. I’ll meet you and Mason in Hawaii in a few days. Can’t wait for this vacation. Long overdue. See you soon.”

I smile as I type my reply.

“Have a safe flight. Beaches, sun and beautiful women, here we come.”

I walked back to the firm and as I was heading towards my office, my secretary, Marie, jumped up from her chair.

“Elijah, I thought I should warn you that Vi is waiting for you in your office.”

“Shit. How long has she been here?”

  “An hour.”

  “Thanks for the warning, Marie.”

I opened my office door and stepped inside.

“Since you can’t bother to call me back, I decided I would sit here and wait for you.”

I could tell her tone was an angry one, but I wouldn’t let her ruin my good mood.

“Vi, I was in court. I told you this morning I wouldn’t be around today.”

“Too bad. I got a call earlier from Patsy. She told me she saw you two days ago having dinner with some brunette who looked like a prostitute. It was the same night you canceled our date because you had too much work to do for an upcoming case. I want an explanation now, Elijah,” she demanded in the harsh tone that I couldn’t stand anymore.

Shit. I set my briefcase down and leaned against my desk, placing my hands in my pockets as I stared at her.

“She was a client. End of discussion.”

“You’re a liar!” she voiced rather loudly.

“Vi, I don’t have time for this. Not today and not tomorrow. You do not question what I do. Understand me?” I spoke in an authoritative tone.

“So you’re seeing other women? I assumed we were exclusive.”

“Did I ever say we were exclusive? You know what they say about people who assume.” I took a seat behind my desk.

“We’ve been seeing each other for two months, Elijah. Two fucking months, and I have never once looked at another man. I even overlooked the fact that you wouldn’t let me go to Hawaii with you.”

“That’s a trip for me and my brothers. No women allowed.”

“Yeah, so you can fuck as many women as you want. God, you’re just a pathetic lying asshole. My friends warned me about you, and I should have listened.”

“Perhaps you should have. Whatever you thought we had is over. I have work to do so you need to leave.”

“I don’t understand how you even live with yourself. Whatever stuff you left at my place, I’m burning. Good riddance, bastard.” She stormed out of my office.

A moment later, Marie walked in.

“And another one bites the dust.” She smiled.

I leaned back in my chair and sighed.

“Block her number and let security know she’s not allowed in the building.”

“On it. Congratulations on winning the case.”

“Thanks. I knew the jury would swing in our favor.” I smiled.

“Don’t forget that Harry’s going away party is at Rudy’s at seven.”

“I haven’t forgotten. Have we found his replacement yet?”

“No. Your mother said she’ll start scheduling interviews when you get back from Hawaii because she wants you to sit in on them like always. In the meantime, Roger is taking his open cases.”

“Man, I need this vacation so bad,” my brother Mason said as we sipped our drinks in first class. “So, I heard you gave Vi the boot.” He smiled.

“And where did you hear that from?” I arched my brow.

“Allison said that Marie told her.”

“I keep forgetting you two work together at the fire station. She was waiting for me in my office when I got back from court. Apparently, a friend of hers saw me and Danielle out to dinner the same night I canceled my date with her. She demanded answers.” I rolled my eyes.

“Good call. If a woman demanded answers from me, I’d get rid of her too. There’s nothing more annoying than a woman trying to control your life. It’s bad enough Mom still tries to do it.”

“Here’s to meeting up with Nathan, relaxing, and fucking beautiful women we won’t have to worry about seeing again.” I smirked as I held up my glass.

  “Touché, bro. Touché.”

We landed in Honolulu and found Nathan in baggage claim.

“It’s about time you two douchebags got here.” He smiled as he hugged us.

  “How was Paris?” I asked.

“Beautiful as always. Great weather and great sex.”

“You were only there three days, and you scored?” Mason asked.

; “The French women can’t resist me and my charm.” A smirk crossed his lips.

“Well, let’s hope we have the same luck here. Watch out Honolulu, the Wolfe brothers have arrived,” I spoke as the three of us high-five each other.
