“I don’t know any details.”
“Fuck.” As head of the Mining Consortium it would be his job to shut them down, and the thought of battling one of the most prestigious families in the whole province didn’t appeal to him. After the last two accidents, he’d given Laird Caspian a final warning. Any more safety violations and there would be dire consequences. Kyle shoved back his chair and stood. “Thanks for the heads up.”
“What are you going to do?” she asked.
“I need to alert my team of inspectors. Then we’ll head to the mine and find out whose fault it was.”
“I bet it was theirs,” Lily said.
“Avonbelle Insurance would like that.” He understood why she was a bit prejudice against any dragon shifter.
“It’s about time the dragons are punished for their evil ways,” she said. “What progress have you made on the Ed Hollix case?”
The image of the man who’d lost his leg from the knee down still plagued him. “Not as far as I’d like. The rail car sped up and jumped the track, but my technical experts can’t explain how it happened. No one was in the office changing the speed.”
“So what? You’re giving up?”
They’d had this conversation too often. “No. We will continue to investigate. With this third accident, I’m sure we’ll find a link to tie them together.”
“You better.”
Her bitterness was making a recluse out of his sister. Maybe if he’d nearly died because of a dragon shifter, he’d feel the same way. “I need to keep an open mind, or at least pretend to. You know that. I will shut down the mine while I investigate.”
“Good. I’m on my way there too. Whoever is injured this time will want to be compensated.”
“See you there,” he said.
After he hung up, Kane grabbed the folders from the last two incidents and then called Dennis Taylor, his lead investigator.
“Hey, Kyle. I assume you’re calling about the explosion over at the Caspian mines.”
“Yes. When did you hear about it?”
“It’s been all over the news. I just assembled my team and we’re heading over there now.”
Kyle appreciated his proactive behavior. “Great job. I’ll meet you there.” Shouts sounded in the background along with running footsteps.
Kyle hung up. The oddest thing about this was that for both of the last two incidents Laird Caspian seemed as determined as he was to find out what had happened. Never once did Kyle get the sense that the man was withholding information. Now that he’d be shutting down his operations for a while, he would now find out just how cooperative Mr. Caspian could be.
