Calamity Rising (Deathwalker Book 1) Page 17

I didn't. Not really. Dealing with my mother had always been easy, up until she died.

"Yeah. I get it. They also don't want their good name dragged through the mud."

Kuro shook his head. "They don't. Can I come in?"

"For what?" I said, but my fingers slipped from the door, and I took a step back. It must've been the exhausted part of my brain that allowed it to happen.

Kuro stepped inside, and once again, I found his hands cupping my cheeks. They were warmer now, and his green eyes sparkled like the moss in that Spirit World forest. "I just want to properly thank you for saving my life. What was it? Three times now?"

I didn't move away. I sucked in a breath filled with the scent of his body wash and shrugged. "I take many different forms of payment."

  "How about a kiss?"

  "Cash and food only."

  "Hmm. Pity."

My heart thundered in my chest. Instead of fighting it, I leaned forward and snagged his lips with mine.

  Kissing Kuro Abe.

I never thought I'd do that unless Takama-ga-hara caught fire.

  It must've just happened.

When Lux finally came back to full power, I was thankful Kuro wasn't around. Still, that didn't keep him from mentioning it.

"And here I thought you hated Kuro. Is that what humans do when they hate someone? Make-out for two hours?"

I sat at my desk, feet propped up, and frowned at the Godzilla poster on my wall. The sealed dog toy from my Longneck Woman case sat next to my feet. I took it from Meiji with the promise that I'd deal with it later. It wasn't fair that her daughter got to rest when she was trapped in there.

I'm not sure if Aki spread the word or it was Ken or Kuro, but I had a slew of new cases. They weren't big time, but it was enough to pay rent and eat all the ramen I wanted.

"It wasn't hours. Not even close. And where have you been? It's been three days. We have a lot to talk about. Like your real name. What's a Kami Stone? And how the hell did you know about that Calamity trapped there?"

Lux chuckled darkly. "As I told you before, I've had many names in my time, and if I narrowed it down to one you wouldn’t believe me. If you want to know what I am, you have to free me. You can put me in that Tachi sword. I think that would be a nice Vessel for me part of the time. As for your other question: how did I know what was sealed there? Because I'm the one who did it."

I’m Yukine Nox, an initiate Shrine Maiden with the unfortunate ability to see ghosts and demons from the Spirit World. In order to take these monsters down, I need a special weapon--a weapon that's dangerous to create. When the ritual goes wrong, I end up trapped in the Spirit World with nothing but my own magic to guide me. Too bad said magic also erodes my soul.

Not to mention the supernatural monsters trying to kill me. Things can't get much worse. Until I stumble upon a demon trapped in a stone. If I help him, he'll help me, but how can I trust what I was raised to hunt?

  Tokyo Savage (Deathwalker Book 2)

  Coming May 15, 2017

A death curse is spreading over Neo-Tokyo, and I’m the only one who can stop it.

I’m Yukine Nox. Private Exorcist. Dark Mage. Necromancer. And the girl with a God trapped in a stone around her neck.

When murderous ghosts pop up in public places, I hit the streets to take them down before their death curse spreads out of control. But the conspiracy runs deeper than I imagined into the dangerous underworld of the Yakuza. Plus, my kind of boyfriend wants me to step into the Spirit World, a place full of demons and ghosts, to find his evil brother. The brother I sort of stranded there. Oops.

Not to mention the strange new moniker I’ve been labeled with: Deathwalker.

Embracing the depth of my dark powers is the last thing I want to do, but it might be the only way to save the city.
