It wasn’t long before everyone had left the circus and the circus folk were packing up the tent. Wanda sat perched on Bethany’s huge grey head as they watched everything being put away.
‘I don’t think I want to be in the circus,’ Jo, now a horse, said from the next wagon.
‘Can we go home now?’ Sarah, also a horse, asked.
‘I miss my new kitten,’ Bethany said.
‘As soon as you go to sleep the wish will be over,’ Wanda reminded them.
Nobody has ever seen two horses and an elephant lay down and go to sleep as fast as Bethany, Sarah and Jo did.
Wanda looked at her wish watch and saw it click over to SLEEP just as the girls closed their eyes.
In a flash the circus was gone. Instead Wanda was sitting on the windowsill, watching Bethany sleeping in her bed. She let out a sigh of relief and tiredness. This wish fairy job was hard work!
Bethany’s mother came in to tuck the birthday girl in. Bethany’s eyes fluttered open and she grinned when she saw where she was.
‘Did you have a good birthday?’ her mother asked.
‘Yes. The circus was the best!’ Bethany said sleepily.
‘I’m pleased,’ her mother said and then frowned a little. ‘I thought that one of the trapeze girls looked a lot like you.’
‘Me too,’ Bethany said. She winked at Wanda and smiled.
‘I wouldn’t let you do anything that dangerous,’ her mother said, shaking her head.
‘Tomorrow I’m going to make my own circus. Andrew can be the clown and Megan can be the monkey. My new kitten is going to be the lion...’ Bethany told her mother.
‘That sounds lovely. Can dad and I watch?’
‘Sure,’ Bethany agreed. ‘Good night mum. It’s nice to be home.’
Bethany smiled as she drifted off to sleep. Wanda fluttered off to find an open window and fly home. Surely that was the hardest wish she would ever have to do. She flew off, eager to tell all her fairy friends about her day. She caught up with Mirella and they vanished into the starry night.
