I finally came to terms with that when I got to the scene where Todd comes to find Phina after she ran from the medical center. I was still kind of slogging and getting very little written till then. Then Todd enters, and he’s talking to her and listening and…it suddenly hits me that he’s exactly the kind of person she needs in her life.
They fit in a way Link and Phina did not, and as I looked back on all the scenes that gave me trouble in the first two books, it was for exactly this reason. They kept telling me they were family, and I just wasn’t listening.
So, now you know one of my secrets—I have voices in my head.
